i would like to know peoples views generally about teaching religion in schools.
it fucking angers me that christianity and "god" are taught as fact in school to children from the age of 4,when there is no evidence that god exists.
my children have had PE lessons cancelled to do religious studys instead.
in modern times when obesity in children is on the increase i find that wasting time teaching myths as fact instead of getting kids on the move is appalling.
i would like to see religion abolished in schools so people can make their own minds up when they are old enough to do so,not have it inforced on them from an early impressionable age.
i have no problem with children learning about different religions and cultures but making kids pray and sing hymns and forcing god at them drives me potty.

I didn't think they were allowed to do any sort of god bothering/selling in schools anymore unless it's one of these church funded/run affairs.

What about all the parents who DO want their kids to gain these perspectives?

Write the school a letter asking them to withdraw your kids from RE?

Yup you can withdraw your kid from the religious stuff if you want. Problem is, it might socially outcast them from the rest of the children.

RE is a lesson and when you get into secondary school is a GCSE and you need to be taught some religion. I got to admit though, i fukin hated learning Islam but Christianity was the one i was good at got an A in that :D

they can teach their kids themselves, the lazy cunts. :x  :D

I agree with pretty much everything Arriba has said here.

when i was in primary school, i used to refuse to say amen after the prayers and the headteacher hated me because of it  8) hardcore

like i stated previously,i have no problem with children learning about all religion and cultures.
it's teaching children that there is a god and praying and all that that i dont like.
all primary schools do this as far as i'm aware.
i wouldn't want to exclude my children from lessons and assemblies though.
people can believe what the ylike but teaching god as a fact with no evidence is a joke in my opinion.

even if i believed in god it shouldn't be taught as fact as it is a belief or faith,not a fact that can be proven.

I would agree with the perspective arriba put here. Its about giving a balanced view of all religions and cultures, not trying to force kids to believe etc.

Anyway, on a lighter note, but somewhat of a tangent....

Far away in the tropical waters of the Caribbean, two prawns were swimming around in the sea - one called Justin and the other called Christian.

The prawns were constantly being harassed and threatened by sharks that inhabited the area. Finally one day Justin said to Christian, "I'm fed up with being a prawn, I wish I was a shark, then I wouldn't have any worries about being eaten."

A large mysterious cod appeared and said, "Your wish is granted" and lo and behold, Justin turned into a shark.  Horrified, Christian immediately swam away, afraid of being eaten by his old mate.

Time passed (as it invariably does) and Justin found life as a shark boring and lonely. All his old mates simply swam away whenever he came close to them. Justin didn't realise that his new menacing appearance was the cause of his sad plight.

While swimming alone one day he saw the mysterious cod again and he thought perhaps the mysterious fish could change him back into a prawn. He approached the cod and begged to be changed back, and, lo and behold, he found himself turned back into a prawn.

With tears of joy in his tiny little eyes Justin swam back to his friends and bought them all a cocktail. (The punch line does not involve a prawn cocktail - it's much worse).

Looking around the gathering at the reef he realised he couldn't see his old pal.

"Where's Christian?" he asked.

"He's at home, still distraught that his best friend changed sides to the enemy & became a shark", came the reply.

Eager to put things right again and end the mutual pain and torture, he set off to Christian's abode. As he opened the coral gate memories came flooding back. He banged on the door and shouted, "It's me, Justin, your old friend, come out and see me again."

Christian replied, "No way man, you'll eat me.  You're now a shark, the enemy, and I'll not be tricked into being your dinner."  

Justin cried back, "No, I'm not. That was the old me. I've changed."....................

teaching religious studies is fine. nothing wrong with it, but shouldn't exactly be a main subject. in my school its done once a week.

i think we should do away with religion in schools as well Arriba! in fact i think religion ahould cease to exist all together! we wouldnt have wars it wasn't for the damn cunt!

At my primary school RE was really important. I think it should be an option whether your children take it or not. I mean other subjects are much more important epsecially if they are to do with what your children wants to get involved in as a career when they're older.

At my secondry school we had RE twice a week and PE three times a week which was ok. The only thing that annoyed me was, was that the Jehovah witnesses had to do it RE aswell, and I think thats pretty unfair on them. The ones I spoke to hated it. I doubt their parents agreed.

Just for the record RE was the most boring subject I ever had  :D

I never had to do RE, thank fuck. It was touched on a little by 'Humanities' from 11-14 (Geography, History, Social Science, RE in one basket) but that was all.

you left early enough! i HAD to it! got an E though  :D

Missed it by 2 years i think.. happy days.
