Title: Finding a new job. Post by: timmyg on Saturday, February 25, 2006, 19:04:35 I'm currently looking to head back to the UK after my stint over here eating ice-cream and have been applying for jobs in a range of positions and a range of locations.
One of these applications has asked for 'a CV with a covering letter containing salary expectations.' Now here is the pickle, what the bloody bugger do I put? I have no expectations and don't know what a similar role would command as it's the first postion of it's kind that I have seen. I've never had a real job and so don't know. I'm a graduate of immense 'potential' (my own words) and most graduate positions have starting salaries of about £17k to £22k, but I've not managed to get one of these. Shall I ask for a little so they like me more? Or cammond a lot so they think that I'm ambitious? £10k? £20k? £30k? How do I slip it into the Covering Letter. Thanks peeps. Title: Finding a new job. Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, February 25, 2006, 19:10:43 Research what similar roles offer and use this to define your own salary expectations. When stating your expectation do not up the ante and any expectation should be justified - why do you want that amount? Being honest serves well.
That's what I got told by various careers things at uni. Title: Finding a new job. Post by: oxford_fan on Saturday, February 25, 2006, 22:32:05 ring them up and ask if they have any jobs. then ask how much the pay is, or at least a pay range.
might work. dont say your name or even better get someone to call for you. then ask for £2/3k more than they offer in your letter. Title: Finding a new job. Post by: timmyg on Saturday, February 25, 2006, 22:42:47 The problem is that I don't know the name of the company as the advert was placed through a recruitment company and says 'Our Client' so I can't research the firm or any of that jazz.
Most of the jobs I've been looking at have had a starting salary of about £18/19/20k so I've asked for 'around £20k - £22' as it's in London and as such shoudl have a little bump up in the pay. And I'm awesome and deserve a shitload, but they can find that out later on. Title: Finding a new job. Post by: STFC Village on Saturday, February 25, 2006, 22:47:04 Ask the recruitment company?
