Title: Andy King to Northampton
Post by: reeves4england on Wednesday, November 30, 2011, 12:14:31
...as assistant manager. Aidy Boothroyd taking the top job.

There you go.

Aidy "Hoofroyd" as he is known. Great to see Kingy back in the Management game.

Good appointment to be honest as the Cobblers are on free fall and need results.

Still in touch with Kingy albeit less frequent now.

Chance of Kingy getting the job like he did here if Hoof buggers off early.

I didn't think that size player could still get a job anywhere in the FL. Says a lot about N'ton's problems...

Kingy always had an eye for a player.

People don't realise that Aiden Flint was another of Kingy's finds and was about to sign for Colchester United when Swindon offered more money.

Kingy found Flint? I thought Wilson's son played for Alfreton and Wilson found him that way.

I never understood the vilification of Andy King. When you consider the financial constrictions that he worked under he did a magnificent job. And he brought in some really good players too.

I hope he is a success at Northampton. Starting in 2012 mind........

Failure with Johnson,
2 caretaker managers in two games.
The appointment of a 'big' name on a very non-committal contract.

Northampton are a mess.

I expect Northampton's season to end with Andy King in charge... Or having been in charge at some point!

I liked Gurney, he did the simple things. Normally received the ball short from the keeper and then gave it to the midfield to let them do the technical things. He didn't give the ball away very often. Apparently smoked like a trooper but always seemed fit enough.

Gurney was great and got to know him well and shared a few laughs.

He was a hard bastard but his Brother another story........A nutter you would not mess with. Did some time
......and had an interesting incident with another of the players at the time (and not Hewlett) for obvious reasons.

In fact the Gurney Brothers were not welcome at Swindon after both incidents. :)

Was on the phone to Kingy last night. Still talks about his time at Swindon and looking forward to being back in football.

Will be meeting him again at the Cobblers game in a few weeks.

Yes he had his issues, particularly the after match interviews which his good Mum used to tell him off !! but has remained a friend since he was Manager at Swindon. Not a year passes without a Christmas card exchange and Ian Woan once said Kingy is a loyal bloke and once you know him will remain a friend.
Have great memories with Kingy probably the most notable one being in his office after the 1-1 Hartlepool game where we made the play offs. Was drinking in his office in fact drinking lots out of the fridge.
In his time he introduced me to Ossie Ardiles, Micky Hazard and Cyril Regis so you won't hear me knocking him as a mate.

One of the "old school" football types and a legend in the blue half of Liverpool.

I always had a soft spot for Kingy. I loved the team's ability to come back under him. I said in the Play off season under Wilson (after it being pointed out that once we go behind we never win) that I've never seen a manager so able to go behind and turn it around in quite the same fashion.

The journey was an entertaining roller coaster under King and showed me everything that football is about. There were some truly memorable games under King that will live long in the memory. Wilson was undoubtedly a better manager, but I don't think I'll remember many of his games apart from the play off at Charlton.

The majority of the players were also loyal to him as well. After the sacking at Swindon for a brief time he owned a pub in Flitwick and invited me to the initial opening.
Full of ex pro's Mick Harford, Brian Stein - ex Luton Lads with Sol Davis at the time a current Luton player.
But Sam Parkin and Matty Haywood also came along and Super Sam would never have a bad word said about Kingy.
He also bought in the calibre of players like Tommy Mooney and James Milner.

That Virgo header at Brighton...........................If only we kept the ball up field for another 30 seconds. Remember Kingy's tears after that game.

Then the dreaded budget cuts and the playing budget was drastically cut.

Sturrocks wage bill at Swindon was double than Kingys in that play off season - Amazing.

PS - The Come back vs Sheffield Wednesday at the CG - 2-0 down and won 3-2 with a Fallon winner was memorable.

I can't think of King as our manager without a huge smile on my face.

The post-match interviews, the cigars, the continued attempts to score last-minute goals by putting Antoine Van Der Linden upfront (instead of bringing a striker off the bench).

It was a spectacular time for town - sometimes spectacularly brilliant, sometimes spectacularly shit.

I thank him for restoring my faith after the Todd and Evans shenanigans, and for the Parkin-Mooney partnership.

You a genuine mate of Kings, Banners, or were you one of the Brown Nosers from that era?

Still Mates with Mark Devlin.

Lots of "things" happened during that era some good and some very bad.
Put it this way a few people were doing lots to drive out the scum that were killing our Club and not just walking to the ground with coffins, false money and masks.

Paul Davis put in a shift and a half.

and for the record yes Andy King has remained a Mate as well as Mark Devlin.
Two decent blokes.

It's quickly forgotten that Mark nearly lost his life yet alone his Son having to learn to walk again following that plane crash.

I guess therefore is how you would determine a brown noser.............So Yeo can spout the shite and I will remain quiet on the subject knowing the facts not the opinions.
Still we can all sleep easy without that Diamandis being at the Club and certain discussions are not appropriate for forum discussions. Putting it another way things got "personal".

A new positive era now.

No hero or better supporter than anyone else Yeovil but still as passionate as I have always been.

When things got said in confidence then they had to stay that way, so no building up anyones part.
Those dark days are behind us now and only football related matters are discussed instead of how we can oust Diamandis from the CG. Looking back I could have easily have quit watching Swindon.

Nothing more to add from me except this current era hopefully will bring back the great times for everyone who follows STFC so happy days.

Hey, Banners -

I remember your contributions on this forum back in the Diamandis days, and it was all good for me.

Bit surprised you'd remain mates with 'Kingy' though. One mans poison and all that though, eh?

Ditto Devlin as he was just Diamandis' lap-dog and mockney enforcer for my money.

Wouldn't of wished that plane crash shit on him and his kid though - I don't think anyone will ever know how the fuck they all survived that. No sour grapes though as I guess he was only doing his job.

Agree with you about better times now. Wray seems to have made the right appointment with PDC, the club are on the up and the future looks a lot better. Here's hoping we keep improving coz I cant remember feeling so fucking good about about STFC for a few years now.

Your reference to 'sticky'.... I think I'm getting you on that..... and if so, I applaud you Sir

Is this sarcasm? It's early so I may have been whooshed but aside from Howard and perhaps Parkin, who the fuck are you on about?

That was his point - they didn't meaning for most of them King got the best out of them - alluding to the fact he could motivate them. I think.

I once slagged andy king off to Matty Heywood when things were not going great. I said that i didn't think Kingy motivated the team. Heywood wouldn't have any of it and said Kingy was popular with the players and i had it wrong.
One of the most genuine footballers i have met so took him for his word on it.

Good stuff,I was only playing really.I remember us having this kind of discussion on thisis a few years ago.It was nice to get a bite.I don't go anymore so when it comes down to it you really are a better supporter than me  :toocool:

You were one of the fans that always made me laugh. Mex has followed you by no longer going and I miss him and his Dad as well. Can't see him changing his mind due to his political beliefs. My god have I tried but he won't have it.
I hope one day you come back. Certainly the football is better again.
Sadly you won't be able to get another picture of yourself pretending to punch Bill Power :)
A fine moment from Mr Yeovil that made me laugh.

Get yer arse back where you belong and bring Mex with you would be good to see you again.

With you all the way about the good times.
After all that Diamandis bollocks and co I disappeared from the forums for some time as I could just get back to watching the football side of things.
Reference Mark Devlin for the record he had no relationship with Diamandis other than had to work with him. He hated him and had more reasons to.
When you are told "the plane crash could have answered all my problems" then you get the type of bloke Diamandis was.
For the record only Wee Willie visited Mark Devlin & Co in hospital. Holt, Wills and of course Diamandis stayed away.  I made it uncomfortable for the lot of them when I entered the board room with a pint glass collecting money for Stan (Marks lad) in hospital. Diamandis didn't want to put anything in it but had to with others looking on.

Still had the last laugh over Diamandis.
Mark Devlin still has a massive soft spot for Swindon. Would be great a Southern JPT game against Brentford (Mark is now at Brentford if you were not aware).

I think Willie gets a bit of a rough ride to be honest. He is a totally cretin, but its not really his fault. He leant the club some money, got installed as chairman/shit deflector, then people got upset when he wanted his dosh back. His appearance on 'I'm a celebrity...' suggests to me 1/2 million squid is a lot for him to lose rather than loose change. Surely nobody does that programme just for a laugh.

As for Diamandis, is he actually doing anything now. Hopefully he is sitting in a bedsit with a cold can of beans reading this and seething.

That Diamandis quote is fucking astonishing, even by my standards. I'd have gone after the cunt if he'd said that regarding me in a plane crash.

Liking the story about embarrassing the cunts in the board room as well. Love to of been a fly on the wall!

Unfortunately not. He had a media company that was doing quite well and got bought, about 2 years ago, by Carat Media for, if rumours are to be believed, upwards of £40m. On a positive note, I feel quite good about it, because I made all that up.

Shame so many hate King, but understandable. His post-match interview technique did a lot to discredit the good he did. A decent man at heart who gave everything but who often started an argument in an empty room!

My view on him is that he simply didn't deal with stress very well. If things weren't going well on or off the field his response was to come out fighting.

But speak to most of the players who played under him and you won't hear many bad words. You might get a wry smile, but not a bad word.

Of course there were lows, Cheltenham away and the relentless booing at home, but that play-off season was wonderful and I remember his tenure for more good than bad, there were so many players I enjoyed watching: Michael Reddy, Woan, Parkin, Migs, Igoe, Mooney, Jimmy D.

On a personal level I fell out with the guy every week because he saw most media requests as a chore, particularly his programme notes, but he once sent me a pair of footie boots while in hospital after I broke my leg playing football, which was a nice touch.

And as difficult to deal with as he was, he only ever wanted to Swindon to win football matches.

Not much point bringing you football boots in hospital.

Crutches might have been better.

Probably a bit clichéd that though.
