Title: Mark Marshall
Post by: STFC_Gazzza on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 16:36:59
Well done to Marshall. Showed that he actually cares and wants to play for the first team. Just a shame his colleagues couldn't really be arsed. >:(

Marshall I thought did well today and glad he got his chance.  Need something to put the wind up JP's sails.

Needs some work on his first touch and his crossing was a little deep but luckily Macca picked those up and got them back in from the other side :D

Unbelievable pace. Never seen anything like it!

One of the only bright spots today I think.

His crossing was deep but I'd prefer that to hitting the first man or putting it beyond the goal-line.

Shows great promise and I'm sorry I wrote him off after his shockingly poor game v Pompey.

Still needs work though, obviously

People over reacting I think. The defending was poor but overall we were a better side than Colchester. We lacked a bit of battle in the first half sure but 2-0 was an extremely flattering lead. A decent ref, and a tighter defence and we'd have been laughing. If only...

And yeah Marshall was OK. Over did it a few times really but can't blame him.

Don't get too excited by our second half performance. They were 2 up, away from home, and changed their game accordingly. It was quite comfortable for them overall.

I don't think he's very good, buthe's exciting.

having said that, cracking corner that someone (Kanyuka) hit the bar off of.

Fuckin hell, I'd run around if Malpas gave me a chance.

Full of energy and pace, very little else. Could be a decent player in there but he's still a bit Ricky Shakes.

I wasn't particularly impressed either, i'd stick him out on loan to league 2 until xmas and see what he can do.

He does seem adept at finding blind alleys to run down

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: Batch on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:03:48
JPM right now. If only he had Marshalls pace.

And McNamees cross.
And Eastons tracking back.
And Ifils tackle (!).

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: Luci on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:04:29
Marshall can improve, I don't think JP can.  Therefore give Marshall a chance.

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:07:06
the only thing JP offers is the abiity to cross.

if he's stood still.

and the ball is into feet.

and he doesn't have to beat his man.

okay, so marshall's crossing isn't great - so what? at least he can actually run with the ball and take players on, which is going to create space for other players. JP could put in twenty crosses during a game but it's fuck all use when nobody can get on the end of em

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: DiV on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:12:09
If no one gets on the end of his crosses thats not entirely his bloody fault is it?

FFS stop banging on about JPM's fault this JPM's fault that were all entitled to our opinions.

Get over it.

nope, just seems everyone hates him and singles him out all the time.

Sure he didnt play well today but fuck me everyone was shit, yet most people are picking him out for abuse.

Put it this way. there was a reason why he was taken off. If he "wasn't entirely at fault" then why wasn't he left on and say someone who would be at the end of his cross not taken off?

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: Luci on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:19:17
I thought he lacked effort, quality and looked like he couldn't be bothered. Marshall was a breath of fresh air.

Paynter, Aljofree, Brez etc. all have had their fair share...Not saying theirs was unjustified.

It is if doesn't cross it anywhere near anyone.

got closer than marshall though.

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: DiV on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:22:17
JPM was taken off because he wasnt playing well and we actually had a right winger on the bench.

Anyone of Kanyuka, Aljofree, JPM, Timlin, Nalis or McNamee could have been taken off at half time.

mcgovern crossed for the best chance of the first half.he did no worse than anyone else imo, and better than some.was he injured?if not a strange sub when 2 nil down.
marshall had 1 run of any threat and did little else.
dv is spot on in this thread and i agree 100% with him

i don't rate JP, i think he is shit. he also has a rubbish attitude.

that's got absolutely nothing to do with blaming him for anything.

i blame smith for the second goal today but i also know he's a solid defender.

VD, cast your mind back... cox on the edge of the 6 yard box rolls the ball out to mcgovern, who has a choice of 3 red shirts to try and aim for, forward or level with his position. he then proceeds to pass the ball to a colchester player just inside the D, after aiming at the opposite corner of the box. he's lazy, he's patchy, he disappears when the going gets tough, yes he can cross, but thats not enough. marshall puts alot more effort into it, plus he's young enough to learn, his touch will improve with games (hopefully) and he's quick as fuck.

give JPM a bench-warmer for a few games, see how he reacts. it might just be the kick up his lazy, excuse-making arse he needs...

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: DiV on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:50:31
JPM needs competition im sure of that but is Marshall really the one to offer that?

I know hes only played about 4 games in total for us....but I dont buy the hes young, raw and will improve.....as we said the same thing about Ricky Shakes 3 seasons later and he hadnt got any better.

On the flip side we said the same about Ifil and hes come on loads as a player.....so its hit or miss I guess.

Maybe its just because he plays right wing but he just looks like another Ricky Shakes to me, all pace and little else.

Of course I'll watch him more and re-judge him after 10 or so games....but I dunno, I just dont hold alot of hope....

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:57:30
marshall did more in 45 mins today than shakes did in his entire time here...for one, he didn't run off the pitch with the ball at his feet.

hopefully roberts will be hungry and really up for it once he's returned to the side and can provide some competition to jp...however, i think he's probably a write-off so getting a player like marshall in was a good move imo.

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: Batch on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 17:58:27
I have doubts we will see Roberts again

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: DiV on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 18:00:28
Roberts will probably get a run out towards the end of the season and that will be it.

I dont know if its just me but Roberts only ever seemed to look like he liked playing out on the wing when Sturrock was here. Before than and since then he's always looked like he didnt want to be there.

Title: Re: Mark Marshall
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, August 23, 2008, 18:01:50
roberts has always been a bit like that, goes through patches where he's really up for it but looks totally ambivalent the rest of the time.

like batch, i wonder if we'll see him again. if marshall does kick on, gets a run in the side and impresses then roberts might be let go.

Thought Marshall was good today tbh. He needs to improve his crossing for sure but he looks like he has pace and a bit of skill. He's like a half finished McNamee i think.

You are so right, exciting prospect, worth turning up today just to see that pace and prospect.

Sonic dont be shocked, I totally agree with you.

I thing I like most about Marshall is his attitude, he desperate to prove him self here and the way he ran around fighting back for the ball. I never seen jpm peg it back to defend. He gave his best.

Players who give they're all, are the players that earn Swindon fans most respect.

fair play to him today.

I can't be bothered to check but who compared Marshall to Shakes?  Come on I can count on one hand the amount of decent crosses RS put in, MM is much more of a prospect than the youtube dancer ever was.

Also people are saying maybe not on this thread or even site but they ca't remember a poorer 45 min Swindon performance, I take it they can't remember the shit we went through with Iffy in charge then.  Fuck me people need to get a sense of perspective on this, it was a shit 45 but the second half nearly made up for it, I'd imagine Baz Lermann (sp) saying this but, it is not the end of the world.

i think that was me, although i said that i hadn't seen such a poor forty-five minutes in a while. brighton at home last season was probably on a par but prior to that, aside from some of the dross sturrock served up - but we were doing well, so that doesn't count - it was the worst display from a town side since the relegation season.

anyway i enjoyed 05/06 in a perverse way

I just want to say, having seen Marshall for the first time yesterday, he is a different class compared to all those other players weve mentioned in this thread. For me he looks ready for league football and thats a fantastic for us.

He looks dangerous and because teams wont know about him im sure he can come off the bench and cause some real problems.

Obviously its early days, but its unbelievable that all those years we really could have done with picking up a dangerous player from non league we never managed it. Then we get Marshall having almost rejected him.

Apropos of nothing not only did Kaid Mohammed score the winner for Forest Green Rovers the other week (FGR - who are now top of the table) but Darren Dykes was playing against one of our local sides the other day. I think it was Supermarine but when the non-league stuff comes on RS I do stop pay any attention.

One Google later - it was Rugby Town.
