Title: Last laptop thread from me, I promise
Post by: Chubbs on Monday, October 22, 2012, 10:11:10
OK, So i know what i want out of a laptop (spec wise), but the question i am asking now is who make then best ones. I dont want another dell, I hear a lot of people rave about Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba. Asus and Acer do some nice looking ones, but are they built well?

I know i have missed some out (HP, Dell) this is because i dont want one, for one reason of another :-)

Thanks

I have a Samsung one, it's very good for the price I paid and reliable enough. Toshiba you'll pay a little more for and it'll hardly be aesthetically pleasing but it should work forever.

Lenovo have now taken over as the biggest manufacturer world wide so I guess that must say something about them ?

My last 2 have been Sony and the build quality has been excellent on both - so Sony for me

Should be able to afford to go for slightly better quality like Sony or Samsung for that kind of money. Depends what spec you're after.

Yea, i have found a nice sony one, but as you say, its paying for the brand, so im weighing up my options as to wether to sacrifice the name and get slightly better spec'd

Keep an eye out on the Sony outlet for clearance (not refurbished) items. Brand new stock but maybe slightly older models.

Hope Sony have improved over the last 4 or 5 years. The ones we have at work are literally falling apart.

My Uncle has a new, cheaper Lenovo and it's pretty poor quality. I don't know whether it's because it was £400 or whether they're doing a Dell and slapping their brand on cheap laptops to make a few quid.

I've owned 2 Sonys and a ThinkPad. The Sonys were good, but the Lenovo felt like it was hewn from granite. It's the only laptop I've used that comes even slightly close to a Macbook in terms of build quality. My sister has a new Samsung and that's a very solid, seemingly reliable, piece of kit - definitely the equal of the Vaio's I've owned.

A friend is convinced Asus are the new sheriff in town, but I've not seen one or touched one.

Reading that back it doesn't sound like I've helped at all, but at least my post count is up my one. 8)

My 4 year old hp is getting really slow, thinking about buying a Mac book to go with iphone, iPad etc, anyone got one? Are they worth the extra £ or am I just falling for their marketing?

I'd never go back to a windows laptop when my macbook eventually does die.

They're most definitely worth it. They hold their value as well, so the cost doesn't feature in the way people think. Spend £1200 on a Macbook and after a year it's worth about £800-£900. Spend £400 on a Windows laptop and after a year it's worth 27p.

The operating system and the quality of the hardware are simply sexual. I have almost no tolerance at all for Windows when I have to use it nowadays.

Cheers for advice chaps, my boy is really giving me the hard sell to get one, if they are half as user friendly as the iPad then I'm sure I won't regret getting one, might just go for entry level MacBook at £800ish. Still seems a lot of money!

It is. But it's like was pointed out to me, work that out over the 2-5 years you'll use it for. The entry level is now £999 for a 2.5, i5 13" MBP I believe. My friend is after one at the moment and you can pick up a brand new one on eBay for about £850 and a near new one, possibly with 3 years Apple Care for less again.

Not sure I'd buy an Apple laptop on eBay, you can get them for pretty much the same price from the Apple refurb store plus they still come with a full 12 month warranty. They had some Macbook Pro 13", originally released at the beginning of 2011 at about £650 the other day which is a bargain. They've currently got the June 2012 model at £850.

Certainly Apple would be the best option and that's probably what I should say to my friend. I've bought both of mine off eBay though, both under a year old, both perfect. Second one with 3 years Apple Care, which is also a nice piece of mind on something that expensive.

You can put dual operating systems on a mac, so you can run windows if needs be. If you know someone with an ac.uk address even better as they get educational discount.

Apple are rumoured to be announcing a 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display tomorrow.

If so i'd be sorely tempted to upgrade, as mine is almost 3 years old and slowing down by the day.

Buy a cheap Windows laptop and you could buy 4 or 5 of them before spending the same as a mac ;)

My Son is looking to buy a new laptop, and I have no clue as to what level we should be looking at.

He found this one on the Dell site, but I'm not sure whether its good or not.

Fire Red Cover, WLAN Dell New! Inspiron 15z Laptop

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3517U Processor (4M Cache, up to 3GHz)
6GB (1x2048 + 1x4096) 1600MHz DDR3
500GB 5400 RPM SATA HDD and 32GB mSATA SSD
Nvidia® GeForce® GT630M 2G
15.6 inch (39.6 cm) High Definition (720p) LED Display with Truelife
Windows 8 64bit, English

I know we have some clever, technically literate, bods on here so any (sensible) advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

What is he intending to use it for? Might be wrong but the graphics card looks mid range so may not suffice as a games machine.

Like the SSD drive and processor though.

I'm sure Si Pie or JJ will be along to put me right if I'm wrong.

To be fair he doesn't use it a lot for gaming (he plays his xbox for that more).

He's just started his first year of 'A' levels and uses it for homework/research. He's not taking any kind of ICT or graphic design, so doesn't need anything top of the range graphics wise.

Entertainment wise, he does play football manager as well as playing music & messing about on youtube.

Just as a question, what would be a decent graphics card?

I was going to buy one of those for Xmas - They had them reduced further (but they were snapped up in 15 mins). I decided to get a more expensive one after reading a couple of reviews from elsewhere (I went to ask.co.uk and typed in the model name). From what I remember the 'E1' tag refers to it being an 'economy' version. Pretty sure it got slated in a couple of Indian reviews.
