Mine is Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

I guess you have to question whether it qualifies as British. It's an adaptation of a British novel, Peter Sellers is it's star, it was filmed in England where Kubrick was also living.

Yes trainspotting is possibly the best. The Wicker Man definitely deserves a mention.

Also, being a horror fan, for me 28 Days Later is definitely up there. 28 Weeks Later is pretty much as good too.

It's a late-90's Scottish independent film set in the 1970's - a coming-of-age sort of film, it's good.

Yeah set in Glasgow during the 70s, about a kid who drowns his mate in the canal and stuff. Definitely worth a go.

Which one?  Holiday on the Buses or Mutiny on the Buses.  I prefer Holiday.

I have to admit without taking the piss I love On the Busses and I could watch it for hours.  I think it’s a combination of the nostalgic almost Carry On style of humour and the fact that the whole thing is like an old cheeky seaside postcard.

There are a few films kicking about which on the surface seem British...actors, directors etc, but are in fact funded by Americans...think something like Gandhi might fall into that category.

Title: Re: name and recommend your fav british film

But what makes a film British?

Funding? Style? Cast?

Think funding.  James Bond films for example are not British funded, so not considered British...despite being shot at Pinewood, having British actors etc.

I believe the two most recent films weren't shot at Pinewood anyway, moved to Poland now I think.

This page helps...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_film

Tbh if a film is american funded but has a British director and cast and is filmed in this country then it is in some meaningful way British.

I love The Hole for a while it was my favourite film and it definitely still is one of my favourites. I fucking love it. Thora Birch is awesome in it. Its down as a British film on that wikipedia page although it definitely didn't jump to mind originally.

Oh, Mr. Porter, starring Will Hay, Moore Marriott and Graham Moffatt

Will Hay was a comic genius

William Porter is working as a lowly wheel tapper on the English Railways until, through the influence of his downtrodden brother-in-law (who happens to be managing director of the railway company), he is offered the position of station master at the isolated station at Buggleskelly in Northern Ireland. Rather a poisoned chalice, as station masters as Buggleskelly have a reputation for going mad and not lasting all that long... Once in Buggleskelly, he hears the story of One-eyed-Joe (the phantom miller), meets his two station hands (the wily Harbottle and good-for-nothing Albert) and somehow has his train stolen by the Phantom Miller... Featuring some of the most inspired lines of pre-war cinema ("next trains gone","I'm their centre forward","If I can't be Gladstone, I'm not playing","You're wasting your time","Everything around here is either too old or won't work - and you're both!"...watch how Porter sniffs and bumbles through life!

Jimmy Perry has stated that he came up with the triumvirate of Captain Mainwaring, Corporal Jones and Private Pike in Dad's Army after watching Oh, Mr Porter.
