Title: Interesting question
Post by: witneygobshite on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:11:08
I am not into the keyboard warrior stuff, but is our rivalary as intense your side of things as they are ours?

Title: Re: Interesting question
Post by: Weasel on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:18:12
No. We don't know what rivalary is.

I've googled it, still nothing.

So 'intense' that the last time you came to the County Ground you only took up half your allocation.

Title: Re: Interesting question
Post by: witneygobshite on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:24:44
I wasnt really looking for a row about it, just wondered if the intense hatred was mutual?

Title: Re: Interesting question

Nah. We hate Bristol.

Since you left the football league you became more like an irritating little brother. An adopted one.

I'd say our main rivalries are with Cheltenham and Bristol Rovers.

Rivalry wise: You have the bragging rights, we have the overwhelming dominant history.

I've been to a couple of Town vs. Oxford games at the CG and they were never really THAT bad.

I always felt more hate when Bristol City came to Town (from both parties).

Thanks for a civil reply, so you see city as your main rivals then?

I don't think so but when will... They've got Rovers, we've got Oxford/Reading and whoever decides to dislike us that season.

Fixtures against Oxford will do our fans some good, it's been 10 years.

For me it's Rovers because I'm young and those are the only derby games I've seen.

I think they're technically our "oldest" rivals too.

Title: Re: Interesting question
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:45:16
why dont you wait and see what happens? Its a long long time since Oxford brought a decent following to the County Ground (15 years) so its uncharted territory at the County Ground. You have a stale retail park out of town ground, so the game at your place will be much more predictable. Theres no point starting all that 'will you come to the Leys' malarky. Its an easy day out for us.

Title: Re: Interesting question
Post by: Costanza on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:45:49
Oxford's association with the Football League is only, what, 48 years old (not counting 3 back in Non-League)? Old timers will remember there being no rivalry.

Oxford probably need our rivalry more than we do but as Spencer mentioned, you rarely back it up when you come to the CG.

It does piss on Bristol City Ltd's 28 year league existence though.

What is travelling well then? Leeds sold out every away allocation in League 1 for 3 seasons.

Aggro wise - yes. Numbers wise - no.

Title: Re: Interesting question
Post by: RobertT on Monday, April 4, 2011, 19:59:28
If my memory serves, the past few times we played Oxford at home, we barely managed over 8000 in total with a pretty unimpressive turnout from the away fans.  We stuffed them both times, and it seemed a bit like what rivalry there had been was now in decline.  The problem is that from a location side, we have too many teams about the same distance away and in reality, they all should have other clubs as their main rival.  It would be a bit like Walsall trying to claim Port Vale as a rival.

I'd say City seem to get more of our juices flowing, certainly in my time since the early 80's, but Rovers has challenged that because we're both as below average as each other at this point in history.  Neither of them would claim us though.

If it's a bit of trouble we want to quantify it by then Cardiff and Bournemouth both strike me as games where you know something will kick off.  Oxford games used to have hype but not much else, usually because we beat them well at home, so a fair few have already begun the travel home by the time the final whistle goes.

have to say oxfords lads have always been game as fuck from what i've seen.the atmosphere at the matches was never top drawer though.
i got chased twice as a teenage lad by those cunts, and saw it kick off plenty of times too.
have to say they seemed to get on top of it generally but that was a long time ago.

The Scum have been game over the years but there have been several occasions at the Manor where we absolutely took the piss. I'm particularly thinking of when we lost 5-0 and when we won 4-2. Spencer is right about their numbers thuogh. It will be real fun next season - absence makes the heart grow fonder etc hence the Banbury and paddington episodes. 1 each I believe.

Obviously never got taught to read....

It'll be nice to play Oxturd again so they can renew their rivalry.  Sadly, we've moved on to bigger and better things.  No doubt we'll put them in their place and send them hurtling back down the leagues from whence thee cometh.

Um, bigger and better things?  I'm not sure we can claim that at the moment to be honest.

Oxford were the main rivals when I was younger - early and mid nineties we had a fair few fixtures, which always helps.  The FA Cup defeat in 2002 hurt.  A lot.

As far as I'm concerned losing to any of the smaller teams, not just Oxford but also the likes of Accrington Stanley and Burton Albion would hurt just as much.
I think the analogy made earlier about Oxford being like an annoying little brother is about right.  It would be frustrating to lose and annoying to have the trolls coming on with remarks that they think oh so clever but in the scheme of things it matters far more that we get back to a higher league than any individual result.

Let's hope this is all academic and we manage to beat them so the trolls can stay quiet.

I'm not interested in the fighting side, just the easy 6 points for promotion.

Thanks.
