Can't say i'm expecting much from us. That said my big hope is that Wednesday don't fancy this game after being told by the ref that they have to travel so maybe they will not be looking forward to it at all? They also have Mellor missing.

I thought about the travelling thing but to be honest, all main raods in Sheffield should have been cleared so there isn't really much excuse. The only question is over how much training they'll have been able to do this week.

We're the only game on in L1 now. Only 1 game on in L2 as well and that's down the road at Oxford. Must be this area that was the least hit by the weather.

...and our pitch and groundstaff are AWESOME!!

0-2 is my prediction today, with an impontent midfield and another defensively frail performance.

It seems only fair that there should be some sort of bonus points system given that we're the only home club that could fulfill their fixture this week - marks for effort and all that :D

Normally when you bring a player down, it's a penalty :)

Mark Marshall scores for Barnet.

From what I read (I'm not listening). Smith brought Buxton down in the box, everyone stopped and Morrison tapped it in after the ref played the advantage.

really mixed bag today.  really well worked goal some good play then we got sloppy and defended deep.  ref is weak but this has profited us. firstly letting wednesday play advantage for their goal. if he had blown we would be down to 10 following smiths foil.  then he didn't over rule the lino for the offside goal.  for me a player standing in front of the keeper is always offside. but they are often given.

Not looking good so far.

Were ok until we scored, but since have struggled to contain them.

Morrison (c) is giving Morrison (s) a bit if a runaround to be fair.

Think we will need to score again (probably another two) to get anything from this game

Cracking performance today we played really well and got a brilliant result, let's hope we build on it.

To all those who boo'd Pericard off your an embarrassment to this football club and I honestly wonder why you go to games hurling abuse and insults at our own players when we are 2-1 up against 4th place, your a disgrace and clearly don't understand what being a supporter is!!!

Up to 14th, 5 points off play off position.

Even though we will have played a game more than most...that amazes me.

Excellent result today.  Our record against Wednesday in the last 5 years is quite handy.

Played a shit ball to Austin who was in a good position

If that's the one on the halfway line, then if Pericard had passed it first time Austin would have been offside by a couple of yards. Then the ball got stuck under his foot, maybe due to the pitch. Shit happens and all that.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"I think everyone would agree that we were the better team for long periods of the game.

"We created chances, we hit the woodwork, had a goal disallowed and a penalty denied. A lot of things we can be unhappy about. "

So you'd of rather of had a penalty than the goal you scored just after it then, Alan? And no, you weren't the better team. Draw would have been the fair result.

He thought Smith should have walked rather than getting a yellow card. I asked him why, and he said because he was the last man. You can say that though about any game where's there only one goal in it. On other occasions this season we've been on the wrong end of results like this. Today we were on the right end. Thank fuck. And bollocks to Alan Irvine. Knob. One of the many things I like about Danny Wilson is that he's not totally fucking deluded.

The stats suggest it was a very even game. Yes, Wednesday had spells where they were on top, but there were also plenty of periods where we were pegging them back and just couldn't quite break them down. I wasn't at the game, but even listening on the radio gives you a fairly good impression of who is on top, and it seemed to me like a game that ebbed and flowed with each team taking the initiative at different points.
Saying they had a penalty turned down is a bot knobish too seeing as they scored about 3 seconds after the foul.

Also Austins goal was superb, good to see JP pulling strings out wide once more. That pass to put Austin through on goal will hopefully be known in the future as simply "THAT pass"

He looked much more settled and comfortable out wide, much better than having him muddling and dicking about in centre midfield. Douglas was also a massive beast - totally fantastic today.

Plus hats off to Lucas, what a fantastic save before our second goal, a game changing moment - hopefully a season changing moment!!!

Well played Vince.

I thought he did OK today, some of his hold up play was very good.

With regards to the pass to Austin as you say the ball got stuck under his feet a bit and ended up as a shit pass. The one a few minutes before was perhaps worse, where he passed the ball backwards rather than play Charlie in.

That said it's not a reason to boo him off, that's just complete toss and does no-one any good at all.

The problem with him is that he doesn't do himself any favours by not bothering to challenge for the ball too often. Bearing in mind his physical size he is too easily knocked off the ball, and should be giving defenders a much more difficult time.

Say what you want about Clinton Morrison (and yes, he is a cunt but not in a good way :)  ) but he gave our centre-halves a tough time all game. Whereas you get the feeling that unless Vince is 100% convinced he's going to win the ball, he just doesn't bother.

There were some great displays today and Austin was amazing. Again. Is that goal the best he's scored for us? I think JP just shaded motm over Austin for me.

Good to see players playing in their proper position - Caddis and JP.

First of all that was a bloody game of football today. Surely Marcus Cassidy is as marketable as Charlie - a fantastic achievement to get the game on
Charlie's goal was absolute class. Thier goal was yet another fucking defensive disaster. Smith deserved his yellow. We were lucky when Morrison was offside as that would have been another pathetic goal to concede. JPM took the winner well and i thuoght we deserved the victory.
I would have given Douglas my MOM. Morrison was fucking useless in the 1st half and bloody good in the 2nd. I also thugoht Pericard played well. he's absolute Marmite to Town fans but I like Marmite. Also Smith made one very good save in the 1st half, Lucas made an even better one in the 2nd.
Fair play to Wednesday who came to give us a game. it was a shame some of their players were gayers who let the others down.
As for the ref - yet another clueless fucker but at least he was equally inept to both sides.

I see Irvine and their bench wanted Smith sent off as well, and they were going ballistic at the 4th official.

I have always said that if a professional foul happens in the penalty area, a yellow card should be the maximum punishment as the opposition is getting a penalty as well, so they are one kick from getting a goal anyway, like they would be anyway.

I guess thats what the handbags were about between the two benches then.

I'd expect Irvine wanted the goal to be given but also the supplementary penalty and a red card as well. Playing against ten men and two up - sufficient punishment dished out surely?

Perhaps he should have demanded that Smith strip from the waist down and hang from the crossbar whilst the Wednesday players took pot shots at his naked man ass..... like what we used to do round the local rec as boys........ too much information? Too weird? Sorry guys, forget I said anything.

Only just got round to posting my thoughts on the game.  First off, as others have said, huge respect to Marcus and his lads for getting the game on and kudos to the 1300 Wednesday fans for battling down here. It was a really good game, not much between the two sides and plenty of drama.

Lucas done excellently coming back in the side, and I for one really hope he will continue at number 1. Smithy is great back up but his communication and distribution let him down when compared to Lucas. Nice to see Dave get a good reception from the away fans too.

Back four were very mixed. From the sublime of Cuthbert and Caddis to the abysmal - certainly first half at least - Morrison. Rose is a real worry defensively and their wide boy (Teale?) had him on toast again and again. Would like to see Sheehan work his way back in.

Dougie was immense and, with Caddis, should have been in with a shout of MOM. A neutral friend of mine who I went with was very impressed with JD, he just seems to be in the right place all the time, keeps us moving and played some superb balls. Charlie and him are by far our most important players. Prutton ran around a lot with out really achieving anything. JPM was better than he has been, and you really can't grumble with a goal and an assist. Ritchie was outstanding, particularly for a spell in the second half just before he unluckily went off.

Austin was Austin. Unbelievable finish - his best goal for us? Work rate, desire, passion and raw talent. Everything his partner seems to lack in my opinion. Vince looked better first half but was abject after the break. I don't agree with booing, but can see why fans get so frustrated. The absolute minimum, the only thing a players must do is work hard, give a 100% and do everything they can for the team. Before he went off he stood and watched the CB win 5 free headers.

Overall, both sides could argue they deserved to win. They were better first half, we shaded the second and it's a massive three points for us. It all means nothing if we then go and lose at Oldham and draw with Tranmere though.

Two final points. The ref, I thought, was excellent. Got the Smith booking spot on and was generally better than we normally get.

And I know people have had a moan about the treatment of Pericard from our fans, but I was more disturbed by the treatment of their young full back Buxton. He was clearly hurt - snapped hammy or whatever - so for the whole ground to boo him off and give him the wanker chant for tearing/pulling a muscle seemed very weird. Obviously he wasn't faking it. Whatever happened to clapping off players who are obviously injured, or at least just ignore them and get on with the game.

It certainly looked like he was "faking it" as I was sat right above it. It looked as though he realised he'd lost the ball and just went down, with no one near him. It didn't help his cause when he crawled back onto the pitch though to purposely stop the game.

I agree with most of what you've said there pandap. I think smith deserves a bit of credit for the one on one he rushed out for fairly early on.

To me it seems a bit strange talking about Morrison as a young player, today was my first game at the county ground for nearly two years, and he's one of the few players who's still here. how many chances can we give him?

I'd love him to come good, but I don't think we've got the time or first team places to get him there. He was very much the weakest link in our defence today, and I'd like to have seen JFL in his place.

I thought Rose was pretty good, but suffered from our defence loosing it's shape too often. He could work on his positioning a bit, seems like he can do a job.

I can't say I was bothered by the wanker chants at their player. Didn't really realise he was that injured. It wasn't exactly a Keith O'Halloran was it?

Course not but they signalled for a sub straight away, and it was clear he had pulled or torn something. Just thought it was massively over the top to give him a load of grief for it.

Re Morrison. I honestly think that he will not play higher than the Championship in his career, and even then only if we go up. He's slow and has the turning circle of a bus, plus he's prone to horrendous errors. Fair enough with experience he may cut down the errors but he's always going to be slow, unable to turn and between shit and average on the ball. He's an average L1 CB, and I'll be very surprised if he turns into anything more.

The fuck up for the one-on-one that you rightly point out Smith bailed him out on isn't anything new. Morrison is good for a gift a game, and his lunging tackle straight after was really stupid too.

Reading that back it seems majorly harsh on him, but he shouldnt be first choice CB and only is because we are in desperate need of one. If anyone came anywhere near him with a sizeable cheque he'd be gone if it was up to me.

It may have looked like he was faking it to you, but to me it was quite obvious from the way he went down and the way they signalled for a sub pretty much straight away, combined with the fact that he has been struggling with a hammy injury, that he wasn't faking it.

And crawling back on the pitch (or dragged back on by scummy Purse). Every single player would do exactly the same.

I'm pretty much in agreement with you, although I was too busy moaning about being cold to really notice that their player was that fucked. I still don't think it's too much of a big deal, it wasn't as if he was being stretchered off in an ambulance.

I think we're on agreement with Morrison. I'd love him to come good, but I can't see it happening. There's been breaks inbetween, but this must be his third season of regular starting football? If there really were scouts watching him earlier this season then we should have bitten off any offers made.

I hope he comes good, but he's played enough games now that the excuses are running out.

We returned to our expansive passing game and used the width really well. Build up play as good as I've seen since Wilson took charge.

Defensively we still look a bit shakey, but we are slowly improving. The two Scots at the back were a credit to the side. Arguably Caddis's best game by a mile.

A win I enjoyed and will refrain from spoiling it by being over critical.

Caddis had his best game for us i've seen, as did rose tbf. Prutton could have cost us a couple of goals on another day, but didn't so we musn't grumble too much.

quite clearly ungentlemanly conduct at the very least. He tried to deny their player a goalcoring opportunity. Thankfully the ref played on and so that never surfaced.

but I was more disturbed by the treatment of their young full back Buxton.

I can't say what people saw from the TE or the Arkells. But from the DRS it was absolutely obvious his hamstring had twanged. I'm not sure how people three or four rows from me couldn't see it.

On the injury front although Clinton Morrison is a prize twat for giving it some after their goal, it was a nice touch by him and a couple of other Wendies to wish Smithy well when he was taken off.
--------------------------------

The game itself I though was absorbing. We started off well. Got or goal. Then started to sit back as Wednesday took over a bit. Smith bailed Morrison's weak challenge out. Then they scored. Then they scored again but to me Morrison made a slight play for the ball while standing in front of the keeper. In my book you don't need to touch the ball to be interfering. Thankfully this set of officials think the same, but as is the problem with todays offside law next weeks officials may let it go.

Second half Wednesday started on top as we looked to be on the back foot again. No sooner had I mentioned this we upped it again and took over, looking reasonably comfortable and getting a goal, though Wednesday's piledriver that hit the bar was a tad fortunate for us,

As for individual performances I thought JPM and Caddis were immense and MOTM contenders. Morrison struggled in the first half but got better, his positioning worries me at times. Cuthbert had  good one but looked a bit slow off the mar for their goal. Rose was OK

Douggie had a good game but Prutts was a mixed bag. Ritchie looked lively too.

Austin scored a cracker and could have had a hatrick.

Which leads to Perricard. Very mixed for me. One the plus side he seemed to hold the ball up well on occasion. On the downside he was slow releasing it when he did.  He gives the team better shape the Dessovi. But his movement and pace is slightly behind continental drift. But most importantly for me he usually carries no goal threat whtsoever. I'm not even sure he brings Austin into the game much. But I'm not sure we have a striker who addresses all this anyway.

But he does his best so why boo him off?

I was wondering about this, I was surprised he even got a yellow.

I've reviewed this at The Washbag Blog - http://thewashbag.com/2010/12/04/wednesday-protest-falls-on-deaf-ears/ (http://thewashbag.com/2010/12/04/wednesday-protest-falls-on-deaf-ears/)

Smith was cautioned for unsporting behaviour because of his foul by tripping Buxton, no red card was given as there was no disadvantage to Wednesday as Morrison scored.

Can't believe the continued Wednesday reaction to this by demanding Smith should have been dismissed, I might buy Irvine a copy of the laws of the game for Xmas...

Well the way I saw it was, there were 2 defenders on the line. Had they blocked it, the pen would've been given and Smith would've been booked for the foul - not a red because there were 2 players who hypothetically have blocked the goal by this point - as it was the ref played advantage and they scored. So booked him at the next break in play, as you would for a similar instance out field.

Only game on in League One and to get less than two minutes of coverage on the Football League Show is laughable. BBC's research again hilarious - Marvin Cassidy? Austin out for the first five games of the season?

Pathetic.

A great game of football. End to end at times and both teams really set out to win the game in the 2nd half. I thought we started really well and passed it well but were a little on the poor side after Charlie scored. We backed off them too much and let them play and that invited them on to us for their equaliser and also for the offside goal after that. Morrison looked dodgy as anything. I think it's time to get him out of the side tbh. I was certainly glad when half time came.

2nd half totally different. We looked more comfortable at the back and despite some spells of Wednesday possession and pressure we dealt with it quite well. When we had the ball we looked very good. Caddis (very good yesterday - his best game for us) got forward to support JP who also very good. Douglas being back in means we can control midfields again and we did that. We created a fair few chances to get some more goals and it was a good finish from a set play from JP for the winner. I thought we just about did enough.

We're not looking that bad at home. We really need to sort the away form out though if we want to work our way up the table.

Firstly all credit to the ground staff led by ‘Marvin’ Cassidy for getting the game on, although I’m not sure Wednesday would agree.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game yesterday and possibly a draw would have been the fair result, but how many times have we come away with nothing when we’ve deserved more?

Caddis probably had the best game I’ve seen him play, although he does have a tendency to go missing at times, which is a slight worry.  The same can also be said of Rose and we were left exposed numerous times down the left.  Morrison was fairly poor in the first half, but got better as the game went on and won most of the headers in the second half.  His inconsistency is a  concern though and it doesn’t seem to be improving the more game time he gets.  I thought Cuthbert looked really strong yesterday.

Good to see JPM heavily involved and far ore comfortable in the role he was playing.  Dougie was superb.  Charlie, what can you say really?  Never fails to give 100%, superb goal and on another day could have had a hat trick.  I hope to god we can hang on to him in January.

I totally agree with this.  I actually thought he was okay in the first half, but he gets to a certain point in the game and seems to completely lose interest.  At this point Wilson should be bringing him off, not leaving him on for a further 25 minutes while a large proportion of the crowd get on his back.  I have to be honest, I’m not his biggest fan, I’ve really tried to come round to the Pro Pericard way of thinking, but I can’t.  He’s too lazy and doesn’t give enough to the team imo.  However, I don’t agree with the cheering and booing him off when he was substituted, it’s not nice to hear that happening to one of your own players.

It's amazing how yet again we can come away with 3 points against one of the top sides, but struggle against the lower teams..

Who's better-Prutton or Ferry?

I think the answer is it depends. I like Ferry's hustle and bustle approach but an on form Prutton adds to telling passing. Both have a good engine.

I think Ferry has been a little under utilised so far but I have no doubt his day will come.

Was one of thoses games yesterday that could of gone either way and being honest if we had gone away and played like wednesday and got nothing i would of been dissapointed not to get a result.

Some good preformances from Caddis Austin but more importantly McGovern,i hope thats the kick start we need for him to carry on like last year.

Having two players out wide has a much better balance about it and allows Douglas to do what he does best which is break up play and spread it out wide.

Must also say fair play to wednesday fans turning up as it was a fucking nightmare for them getting out of sheffield.

Just seen the highlights and i cant believe nobody has mentioned (unless i missed it, then apologies) the ball from McGovern to set up Charlies goal. A beautifully weighted ball over the top of the defence from JP. It was a sealed deal when it fell for Austin.

I miss the County Ground :(

A game which could of gone either way but ended up a monster result for us.

Still look dodgy at the back and maybe a fully fit Frampton needs to be given another chance.

Dougie was great but still cannot see the point in Prutton keeping his place, runs around alot and gives the ball away alot......Ferry must be pissed off on the bench with him keeping him out the side!

Austin was class, a real poacher and that was a fucking awesome strike.

Poor Old Vince....battered them with his weight and held the ball up well but too predictable and went to ground too easy in the second half.  I just dont think its going to happen now.

Onwards to Oldham....looks like im going!!

credit to wilson, too. At half-time i was thinking there was only one winner. I know we had edged ahead, but they just looked a bit sharper, clinical and more 'up for it'. The shape and ebb and flow of the game changed in the second half and we really took the game to them, so fair play.

Lucas made an incredible save and will now probably get his place back. Still think a frampton-style player is needed, so maybe he'll get the nod at oldham/crawley? Morrison did ok, but he's still akin to going long and getting done by a quicker player...

Nicky hammond was there taking detailed notes of morrison and austin...

I didn't jinx the team for once!

Which could have been down to a couple of things.

I didn't wear a town shirt to the game.
The hat I purchased only hours before the game is a lucky charm.
I wore 2 pairs of socks for the first time to a game.
I had fried chicken in a bap for the first time from the van outside the townend.
I put a bet on in corals for the first time before a Swindon game.

I thought he was a nuisance that Johnson, the better of the 2 strikers. However shows how strong their squad is when they can bring on Paul Heffernan who would surely be first choice for most League 1 teams.

Yep. They have a pretty decent set of striking options really. Think Mellor would have given us some trouble so glad he didn't play. Still wouldn't swap Austin for any of their strikers though.
