Title: Wembley Pubs thread
Post by: Wills1 on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, 09:43:37
Having lived in London Town for a number of years I thought it best that I should pass on some pub knowledge.

Wembley is a nightmare for getting into pubs let alone getting served.

My suggestion is to get off at Kilburn (only a few stops away from Wembley Park) and head to either The North London Tavern or Brondes Age.
Both are 2 mins away from the tube station and much easier to get served.

Hope this of use to some.

Regards Wills

or just stand outside the pubs loaded with cans, like we've done on the last 2 visits.

I might head for Marylebone for pre match drinks, only 10 mins on the overground to Wembley Station.

The premier inn outside the tube, will have a big outdoor bar also, normally they'll have the beers continuously pored and about 10-15 staff serving, so you only wait a couple of minutes normally.

Cracking idea, Allsop arms maybe ala Wycombe. ( Sure the landlords forgotten the racket we made after Wycombe!)

I'm going to visit Uxbridge (wife driving in) in the morning and then tube down to Wembley Park about an hour and a half before kick off I think.  The sheer lack of options around Wembley combined with 80k people milling around just smacks of queues, not finding anywhere etc.

I'm tempted to retrace my steps from 1993 which would mean parking at Northfields and having a few in The Plough before heading up on the Tube. If only it was my 25th birthday again as well!

Wembley Central for me (our side of the ground) I will be doing the tube via Willesden Junction to avoid the possible Baker Street congestion. There is a pub I went to in Harlesden (2 stops down) about 12 years ago when I went to see England.

Although Swindon are situated to the West side of the stadium, it is a racing certainty that Millwall will be allocated some of the major pubs around the stadium. Millwall had the east seating area last year, but had loads of the big pubs [The Green Man] to the West of the stadium as well. Drinking at Baker St would be foolish ... unless you like to mix it with Millwall. There are no drinking restrictions on the day, with most pubs open by 11am latest ... maybe earlier as the local pubs get special dispensation on event days.

We started off in 93 in the Master Brewer in Hillingdon - good place to park, drink & hop on the tube - and it was full of Town fans. The reason for this post is that we noticed on Monday, when we went through Hillingdon, that said pub is now a pile of rubble. Quite sad cos we used that place for over 20 years for England games.

Just wanted to advise anyone who was thinking of going there next Sat. There is another pub right next to the tube station there but it's pretty small, esp compared to the Brewer.

Here you go: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8689951.stm

It's not a tube strike as such, but a strike by the engineering train drivers. In other words, it'll only affect lines that would have been closed anyway.

There are no important tube closures on that day, except maybe the very top of the Metropolitan line being closed

I think most of the people on this board, who are thinking of going to the Green Man pub, must understand that if Millwall supporters decide they want the pub, they will move on mass and take it. I'm sorry to be the prophet of doom, but Millwall will sell their ticket allocation with ease ... they had over 45,000 fans at Wembley last season.

Don't be foolish and rely on the Police, Swindon are playing Millwall, not Yeovil ...

Also, have you seen the layout of pubs at Wembley? Most of the pubs are grouped to the Swindon side of the stadium, so it's a bit of a no brainer really.
Out of the 38,000 (or whatever) Millwall fans going to Wembley, how many do you think are actually involved in the violence etc that forms the club's reputation? I'd say at most 2%. I know you're not saying this in a deliberate attempt to provoke a reaction, but I have NEVER seen any serious violence at a football match. It's not to say it will never happen - plenty of innocent people got caught up ina what happened at the Inn on the Green a few years ago - but I see little reason to worry. If Millwall are not allocated a certain pub it will be a very small minority that even thinks they have any right to go there, let alone has the balls to do anything about it.

For what it's worth on the real football factories the millwall bloke says "millwall have a lot of sleeping supporters that turn up for big games, and a lot of those are hooligans".

Having said that I think a game at Wembley will have a different vibe to a massive game at the new den against leeds or whatever.

Do people unecessarily worry about Millwall because of their reputation? Yes.

Will something kick off at some point during the day? Probably.

Will it involve shirt wearing fans? Very unlikely.

That's my POV.

I have several mates who live and work in South London, have witnessed over the years some of the tactics involved, so it really is plain to see. I guess it's a classic case of taking note or burying 'ones' head in the sand ... I'd settle for the former myself?

Perfect, that would confuse the fuck out of the players, manager, fans and commentators.  Plus the hoolies won't know who to slap.

Love the fact they've put on a public forum the intention to take the pub.

I suspect plenty of OB will be anticipating this action anyway, almost certainly now.

Millwall play in red/black stripes 'away' most of the time.

Anyway, back to the pub situation ... Millwall have been allocated the east side of the stadium pubs, Town, the west. BUT, nearly all of the pubs are located to the west of the stadium? I don't think this will matter too much  :suicide:

Lets face it, if you smack a Millwall fan they're going to go down the same as any other. We're going to have just about every piece of shit within 30 miles of Swindon following us. Sunderlands lads got a right spanking in 90 and there were a good few Leicester in 93 who didn't quite make it home that night including several in the pub i was drinking in before hand.
If you want to go and enjoy yourself, you will. If you want a scrap, you'll get one.
It will be absolutely safe as houses regardless of the result. If you want it, you'll get it - simple.

I agree Chalkie, if anybody is daft enough to want it next Saturday, there will be no shortage of lunatics willing to oblige.
Sunderland 1990 was a blast at the time, although the OB knocking on the door 6 months later at half five in the morning scaring the old dear half to death, made me realise that it ain't worth it. (The £400 fine for affray was a bit fucking steep as well)
A bit wiser now, and a lot fatter and slower, so the plan is to get nicely pissed in some arse end of knowhere boozer, watch us hammer them 4-0 and if they want the Green Man, let the mad bastards have the place.

Nonsense. There are no pubs on the east side of the stadium, and the ones we've been "allocated" are still on the west side, just north a bit. Plenty of 'wall will be walking past the Green man to get to the stadium anyway.

The main problem though is that the majority will just head there because that's where we were last year. As Scunny only took a handful of fans we had pretty much all the pubs, but most people went to the Green man. They will just automatically head there again.

The pubs aren't officially allocated until Wednesday/Thursday anyway and the reason they wait is for stuff like this. Even if you do officially get it, most people would already have made their plans by then, and how many of the 38k Millwall check the website everyday anyway?

And how exactly are the police going to stop a decent proportion of 38k Millwall from drinking exactly where they want to? Most of the Swindon fans will be avoiding it like the plague now anyway. The Green man will be ours, the only question is whether the Old Bill will give it to us beforehand, or be forced to take the path of least resistance (as they always do) and decide to start shepherding thousands of Millwall in, and dozens of Swindon out instead of the other way round.

If you venture up the hill on Wembley High Rd you will be wading through a river of cans. There are a few pubs, take-aways etc round there plus plenty of, erm, Asian-type shops that sell cans-a-plenty. Buying from them & drinking the cans outside the pubs is always a good idea there. You want to be drinking don't you, not wasting half the time queueing.

If I was sensible, I would let Millwall have the Green Man.

The East side is rubbish, weve got the prime end. Loads of pubs, loads of choice.

Millwall will be expected to come in via the Jubilee at Wembley Park. The best way of segregating it would be to let us have all the pubs south of the British rail overline, they get the handful that are north of it (which would include the Green man and DRS's Sports bar).

I guess landlords may well have requested to have Swindon instead of Millwall? But by not giving them the pubs nearer to Wembley Park I think the Met would be backing Millwall into a corner.

Find out soon anyway. Cant wait. 2 hours away from Wembley week.

It's funny really, I love a beer. I mean REALLY fucking love a beer but I've only very rarely got pissed before a game. The only time I've ever got REALLY pissed before a game was Leicester away in 1992 (just before Christmas) and it was horrible. The game was just like a dream...wierd. And I drunk the most horrible concoction of drinks. Felt shit for about three days - and that was when I could really drink (not like now)

Anywhoo, pont is. I'm not bothering to drink before the game. If we win though I am going to party like it's 1999 all over again. I do actually have some champagne on ice chilling as we speak 8)

I'm with you there OST. Whenever i've got drunk before a game i've pretty much missed it. Everyone i am going iwth is getting on it at 9am and i'm worried i'll be too fucked to watch the game (it takes about 3-4 pints nowadays), so may try to stay soberish.

Agreed.  I'm a big lover of beer but have always found beer before football unsettling.  If we win, I shall indulge myself enormously, but its such a big occasion I want to be sober to take it in.

To be fair, as a long distance fan going to a game has, since 2002, involved a lot of driving - making drinking a bit of a no-no.  Even so, I'd hate to wake up on Sunday not fully remembering Saturday, no matter how it turns out.

Indeed, fatherhood is impending.  I stand by it though - if we win on Saturday by a last minute goal, why would you want to wake up not remembering that moment?  If you need to be pissed to enjoy football, you are missing the point entirely.

Of course, I shall get hammered after the game when I finally get home.

Quite a few of us are heading there very early - should avoid the congestion on the tubes and Millwall, plus loads of good pubs.

I'm getting the tube to Edgeware Road and then pub crawling it through Marylebone to Baker Street (doesn't look far on the map but suspect someone will now say it's a good hour's walk!). More pubs that way and you don't have the disappointment of getting to The Globe and seeing it rammed....mostly with Millwall!! The Met bar opposite is large but soul less unless we get a couple of 100 town in there!  :beers:

Not a pub i would go to anyway, but i know of two mini buses who have paid deposits to drink and park here...seems Millwall fans are heading there to which is abit naughty if the landlord/landlady has stated its a Swindon only pub.
Not trying to worry people etc but would be very wary at this pub.

Ahead of this Saturday's play-off final against Millwall at Wembley, the following pubs have been allocated to Swindon Town fans by the Metropolitan Police:

JJ Moons, The Greyhound, Speakeasy, Thirsty Eddies, The Bear

The article says it is not a definitive list, just a few of the pubs allocated on or near Wembley High Road - which the Green Man isn't. Pretty stupid them only posting a partial list, wouldn't exactly have taken them long to copy and paste the full list.

A lot of Millwall are all talk, spotty 15 year olds on a forum acting hard.

Who gets this possesive over a pub for fuck sake.

I'm afraid that is totally incorrect.

Five pubs is enough for 28,000 right?

Title: Re: The Green Man.
Post by: Ardiles on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, 16:06:21
This is really daft.  There are going to be 30,000 Swindon fans in London on Saturday.  Maybe 10,000 will be heading to a pub beforehand...and between them, they (we) will be visiting several hundred different pubs.  So why all the fuss over the Green Man?

My mate spoke to the landlord before the England game and it is definitely a Swindon pub. Millwall had it last year and apparently were no trouble at all. He'd have been happy for it to be Millwall again but the Met Police told him it was Swnidon.
Both he and the Old Bill are well aware of Millwall's interest in the pub and it will be very heavilly policed.

Funny you should say that, because I am feeling a little nervous about taking my 7 year old up to Big London on Saturday with the massive crowds etc, and was wondering if there would be any pubs nearby with a beer garden that would be safe to go to, but after reading all this Millwall are going to 'take over' the pub bullshit I think were head straight into the ground.

yes, but didnt they have to reduce the price of tickets to your 'final'  by half to get some interest?

no. our cheapest ticket was £40. yours, if you really want to compare?

Given the choice of being non league for half your history, or selling 2k less tickets than your poxy rivals at wembley, I know which one i'd take.

the former? it makes the latter more impressive.

sorry to drag this up regarding pubs again and especially the greenman but i've just received a phone call from the met police football leason officer.

i'd emailed them early last week regarding allocation of pubs and which ones are Swindon.

He talked me through the ones which the official site mentioned and also the decision to allocate the greenman.

it was the landlords decision not the police. he had millwall last year but decided whoever had the most booking he would have this year.
Swindon so far have 17 coaches booked for the greenman arriving anytime after 10:30am.
He has sufficiant security for the pub plus police presence regarding entrances to the pub etc.
Checks are in place to determin Millwall & Swindon as he doesn't want the two together.

whether thats your pub of choice or not just thought i'd share what he told me.

The bit near the tunnel is the same as the opposite side which is cheaper. The 2nd tier club wembley section doesn't have an equivalent cheaper opposite side.

For some reason I always thought club Wembley was just the rubbish bit near the tunnel nd that side.

That's the badger - Club Wembley is the whole middle teehur. If you went for the £62 option you either got CW or the best seats in the bottom teeyurr - hence my desire to wait until the CW tickets got released - for the extras. I'd rather slam my frank n' beans in the cutlery drawer than sit in those blocks either side of the tunnel with a bunch of people who couldn't care less about football, & are only there to shovel food & drink down their throats.

The concourse area for Club Wembley is top notch - proper restaurants are available if that floats your boat and plenty of really good food and drink available.  I took a little tour around there without permission when we went to watch Oasis - lost my seat ticket and then got an insiders tour of the inner workings of Wembley as a Steward was assigned to me to get me back to where we should have been (a little drink had been consumed and we had tickets for the all you can drink posh bit).

We're in about the same seats at last time...I can still hear the echo of the ball hitting the post from Maskell's strike.

As long as we don't go 3-0 up and then they get 3 back! I couldn't stand that.

is the ibis the one oposite the station?
Its at the end of Wembley Way, it's a huge hotel if you miss it you need to go to Specsavers.
Fans from both sides will be welcome as long as they behave themselves, bouncers on the door and in the bars etc etc ... a fantastic plate of food for £10 if you need a feast before the game and I highly recommend it. Quality.

Block 126 Row 43, similar place to when I went before, but slightly further back so I know the view will be good :)

Mind you, anywhere is decent apart from top tier I'd imagine.

I think it varies. In the top tier there are about 20 seats in each row, but some blocks have more rows than others! Not so sure about the bottom level.

lush thanks one F - I might just do that!!hahahaha that reminds me of my friends favourite memory of Wembley vs Leicester - on the Victory tour round town afterwards Martin Ling ruffled his hair!

:)  My pleasure - you struck gold there, JFW.

Yup, that's the case in my experience, although the front part of the top tier is a really good place to be, and what I'll revert back to for the Euro 2012 qualifiers. My first game there I was 2 rows from the very top on the half-way-line, & the players were tiny, I felt a little bit removed from the action.

Just did the walk from wembley central on streetmap - stopped off at the bear for one then jj moons for a couple

then had a quick jd's at the greyhound to settle the nerves...

didn't work though!

We're going to The Bear, but leaving at about 1.30 to walk up Empire Way and then back down Wembley Way! (Then all the way round Wembley to get to our seats!!). Sounds a bit pointless but I reckon it'll be worth it to see the sea of red!

yes mate turn right out of central, and the bear and jj moons are on your right. then you can head north for the green man or carry on along the high street for the greyhound

Awesome mate, cheers for sorting the tickets out.  All new material, had us cracking up.  He had Rick Astley supporting as well which was good comedy.

Haha yes I know my Mrs loved it, she loves 80's music.  He did all his 'classics' and a medlee of songs from singers from Manchester.  It was a good support act and Peter Kay was class, best comedian I have seen live.
