Title: I'm going . . . .
Post by: kerry red on Friday, May 18, 2012, 13:22:53
. . . . down the pub. The dogs have been fed and are quiet in their kennel, the missus is on a half day and will be home at 3 so the weekend starts now!

Please excuse any spelling mistakes later in the day!!!

You don't see 'Arp anymore, in England. Is it now confined to Hibernia?

No Harp, but the Guinness is way better than what is sold in the UK.

A nice 4 pints of the Black Stuff, back to change the dressing on one of the greyhounds feet (had a toe amputated a few days ago), walked the others, dodged the showers.

I'm going to miss this place!!

On a slilght tangent, has anyone tried the new Guinness style stout that Wadworths are brewing? It is called Corvus and is pretty good. Not quite as bitter as Guinness.

No but I will certainly be having some when the opportunity arises.

Does anyone remember Red Guinness?

I was speaking to somebody about red Guinness the other week.

The described it to me as something that tasted just like Guinness and looked just like Guinness

So, just Guinness then?

Title: Re: I'm going . . . .
Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, May 18, 2012, 19:11:29
Red Guinness was lighter in colour and flavour. It did have a slight reddish hue to it and was a bit too sweet for my tastes.

When describing the difference vs. normal Guinness to somebody in a pub (they roast the barley for less time, so it's milder) I got told off by the landlady who insisted that they added caramel to it during the brewing process. Thick twat.

No Harp, but the Guinness is way better than what is sold in the UK.

I don't drink Guinness, but do keep hearing that Irish Guinness is sooo much better than the Guinness sold over here.  Either this is complete bollocks/made up, or the Guinness corporation is really missing a trick.  Surely all they need to do is sell the lovely Irish Guinness over here as well, and they would sell more of the stuff.  It would sort of make sense.  No?

I've drunk Guinness in Malaysia.

After 2-3 pints I was wondering why I felt pissed so soon. That's when I discovered it was 8% plus. Malaysians have a thing about super-strength beers (even the Guinness). Go to a corner shop and you'll find more tennents super on sale than any other brand, and more super-strength Guinness than normal Guinness.

And this was in Penang, which is where the regional Guinness brewery is.

Never drank the stuff so don't know personally. I drink Harp over there and i think its a nice lager. Not keen on the heineken which is the other lager usually on tap

ooh, this one is a golden jamacan one - a present/favour for being MC at my sister's wedding from a small stall by these folks - www.vomfassuk.com.

usually i go for mount gay or cockspur as i learned to drink rum in barbados.  i tend to like most golden rums but dislike spiced rums.

i shudder at the idea of mixing them with a soft drink - ice and lime is just fine unless the rum is decent enough to be had entirly on its own.

what's your poison?

I do like rum. A bog standard Havana Club 3yo white does the trick. I dont mind which way I have it but i do quite like a mixer.
Started enjoying whiskey a bit more as i get older. Got majorly put off in my early 20's after necking some horrible tesco's own :p

Post by: Kinky Tom on Friday, May 18, 2012, 22:53:20
as far as white rum goes the havana 3yo is good actually.

i'm generally adverse to a mixer as far as most spirits go to be honest, obviously cocktails are exempt and if i'm forced to drink vodka i'll have it with lemonade or soda.

i do like a good whiskey too, the peaty ones are lovely.

tell me about golden glory?

i do miss ales when i'm in france for the winter months, it's very rare thet i'll drink a lager when i'm in the uk.  the saving grace is that i work in the highest official guinness pub in the world for those months and free guinness is certainly not to be sniffed at.

Guinness is all about how many pints are pulled through the lines.  Back in the day I worked in one of the pubs in old town and if you bought a pint of guinness on one of the pound a pint nights where we sold a shed load it was delicious stuff.  Saying that more than a few pints for me and I start to spin.

Badger beers are very good entry level beers for people who might be lager drinkers usually but want to try something with a bit more taste.  I've got nothing but good things to say about them.  The fact that they are so readily available in supermarkets is one of the best marketing tools the real ale lobby has had in a long time.

I have two versions, the barcardi 151 (with flame retarder) and Brugal (without flame retarder - which scares me!)

Never tried it unfortunately. Always wanted to, because I used to "enjoy" Absinthe of the same alcohol %, purely to feel tough, and I quite like rum.

My dad used to have a bottle which I believe he got in the Caribbean.

You don't know how lucky you are with such a choice of braincell damaging intoxicants these days.

Back in the day it was

Watneys Red Barrel
Double Diamond
Tartan
Starlight
Cinzano (for the ladies, of course)
Cider was restricted to some hillbilly farmer's hooch with bits of dead rat floating in it

Ah, the 70s - what a decade!

It reminded me of Appletise or something slightly alcopop. I wouldn't go looking for it, or even buy it, but much like I was told White Zinfandel is aimed at people who don't drink wine (hence why I thought it was nice), I think Cidre is aimed at people who don't drink cider - again why I probably like it. :)

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout captures our gift to the world: deep, rich and satisfying beer.

Originally brewed in Dublin and first exported in 1802 it's been brewed locally throughout Asia, Africa and the Caribbean since the 1960s. Here, it's the undisputed Guinness beer of choice.

Today, Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is a Guinness world-beater 40% of the world's Guinness Beer is a little foreign and has a little extra.

Extra Stout: Export Class

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout is brewed with extra hops to give it distinctive character and extra shelf-life in warmer climates. It's an export-class beer for countries with a taste for distinction.

Experience it as it was meant to be enjoyed; in a glass or as it comes, straight from the bottle.

Don't know much about these new-fangled Guinness products but bottled Guinness is dreadful pap. Canned isn't too bad, which is strange cos I always reckon bottled lager is far superior to canned.

True... Actually I really like Aspall's Peronelle's Blush (or whatever it's called). Don't know many that admit to drinking it though as it's quite girly. Which is fine for me, being a girl and all!
