Title: scotland's big game
Post by: lebowski on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 11:41:31
i suppose you want to know where i'm at with this.

well, let's put it this way, for lunch i will be enjoying a fresh tomato and basil soup.

for tea, i will be starting off with a wild mushroom bruschetta.

this will be followed by a delightful seafood linguini, complimented with a bottle of pinot grigio.

that will wash it down very nicely.

then, i will indulge in a tiramisu.

i hope i have made myself very clear.

I have always had a soft spot for Scotland, I have Scottish roots from a couple of hundred years ago and my father in law is Scots and till this week I wanted Scotland to qualify.

Up till this week....

Watching Sky Sports News most of the week (for my sins) I was surprised that probably 90% or more Scots want England to get stuffed and not to go through to the finals, and were not at all sympathetic to the English, I know they dont like us but to have such hate for the English expressed by so many "fans" almost shocked me.

As of now I have no time for the Scots and hope the Italians stuff them, they deserve as much sympathy to their cause as they have given us.

Yeah as england fans it makes sense for you not wanting the world champions and therefore one of the favourites for the euro's to be knocked out pre-tournament.

Just because a few scots prefer to see england get stuffed than win, and then have to sit in their Scottish homes watching the British Broadcasting Corps news go on and on about England.

I couldn't give a shit whether you want Italy to win or not, funny thing is you're using the same logic for supporting the italians as the Scots are using to support any side that plays england.  Which gives you no right to moan about anti-english Scots.

Alba gu brath, have a nice day whoever you're supporting!!

Personally my menu today has been

Toast and tea in the morning

packet of crisps, a yoghurt and a cornish pasty

not sure what I'll have for tea, probably a curry.

Add about 10 pints of cornish ale to the mix.

Not sure what that tells you though!

That is exactly why I am supporting Italy on this...if its good enough for them then its good enough for me.....kinda obvious really! That was exactly my point if its good enough for them its good enough for me.

Urm, not sure if that's something to be proud of.  Just seems a little childish to me.  "he started it...no I didn't he did...".  To be fair though in my eyes it's good to have decent rivalry, just like club football.

I love to see england get knocked down a peg or two, but I would love to see both go through, to see Scotland and england in 2008, in the same group would be amazing!

Plus we'd beat you, which would make it even better.

i dont really care who wins,i'm just hoping to see a decent match.
but at least the scots have busted a gut and hit the heights that their fans have been dreaming of.
shame us english cannot say the same.its in scotlands hands(or feet) but out of ours...

i've eaten last nights pizza for lunch and will be having a nice curry this evening washed down with a few lagers,as this is a food related thread.

Turns up to 'cheer' on England against Germany...sees them lose, then

and turns up at Hampden to cheer on the Scots...and sees them lose!!

The England vs. Scotland rivalry is a little like Swindon vs. Reading.  Fortunes change from time to time(oh fortuna!), but one is always seething while the other shrugs it's shoulders.

Personally, I'll laugh at anyone's misfortune apart from STFC given the mood, even England.

Sorry Reg, not meaning to be pedantic here, but where in that post have I complained??  About anything?

I accept the result, yes the free kick shouldn't have been given but that's football.  As you say the ref/linesmen made many errors, they were inept, but not biased.

End of the day we were the third best team in the group.

Scotland's problem isn't really a narrow defeat to italy, it's dropped points against Georgia, rather like England, losing in Moscow and Croatia is not that bad, but failing to turn over Macedonia is what will cause you problems, not that former Eastern Bloc countries are bad, but they are the Birmingham Citys and Fulhams of international football, to hit the heights you need to beat the weaker sides.

Shame for the UK that Scotland didn't qualify.

It's difficult to feel sorry for the Scots though, given the fact they dislike us so much and want whoever we play to win.

(The above is a generalisation, but is borne out by most Scots I know)

Kind of my thoughts. I wanted Scotland to qualify and thought they were doing great. But then kept meeting or hearing sweaties amused and satisfied at England failing and Scotland doing well.

When they didn't manage to qualify, and Israel added insult to injury, i was warmed at the prospect of seeing the egg on their faces.

To be honest though, i don't really give a fuck. I just had to get my post count up.

Must say we cheered when the Scotland score came through however I must say fair play to Scotland for the results etc they got. Its not easy really to play in the group they did. The Scots Would have had a field day if they qualified and we didn't. Looks like there will only be one british team at Euro 2008 now... well unless Northern Ireland qualify.

To me, Scotland are the international Oxford. I don't want them to qualify for anything but the way they don't qualify is always greatly entertaining. Pre Vogts they used to screw it up at the last minute. Under Vogts they just got straight down to work and screwed up from the first minute - now they're back to screwing it up at the last minute again. The nat=ural order of thnigs has been restored.
Saying that England are crap at the moment. I did enjoy the comments about Beckham's delivery. It must be really difficult to find a 6' 7 from a corner - once.

A long long time ago when the Pox were a side that operated in the top couple of divisions of the football league, there was a little club called Wycombe Wanderers who lived just up the road. At the time they were an up and coming non-league side, and the Pox fans used to take a bit of a patronising interest in their fortunes. When the results were announced at the old Manor, the Chairboy's victories would get a big cheer.

As the seasons went on however, the fortunes of OUFC declined and, under the genius management of Martin O'Neill, WW climbed the leagues. Perhaps not suprisingly the Pox fans stopped cheering when Wycombe won and started cheering when they lost.

Now I don't know what the other side of this little relationship might have been but I think it's unlikely that Oxford wins were cheered to the rafters at Adam's Park during this period.

Even now that the postions have been almost entirely reversed I'd guess that the tradition of having been the poor relation locally would mean that Wycombe probably still have little sympathy for their neighbours. And you can't blame them.

So think about it. It's not a suprise that England fans feelings about Scotland, Wales, The Republic and NI are different to the way our fans feel about your side. It isn't a relationship of equals, and it's unlikely to ever be.

A few decades back when Scotland were more genuinely on a par with England in the international game, England fans were only too glad to see them lose. When Ally's Army came home from Argentina before the postcards in '78 the English laughed every bit as hard as the Scotland fans had laughed at England's failure to qualify.

So just get over it you miserable bastards. You've got about 20 times as big a population to draw your team from as Wales, Scotland, or NI, you've got more money than us and are probably always going to be better than us.

If you can't take a bit of piss taking when you concede a goal to San Marino in the first 3 minutes of a game then football isn't the game for you.

Personally, as I've said before, I like watching England play because I'm genuinely ambivalent about it. By that I mean not that I don't care about the result, because I do. But, I was as happy when you were hilariously clueless under Graham Taylor as I was when you were great and put 5 past Germany.

The only thing I've got against Mclaren is that he's a bit dull. I think you're due another comedy manager who's stupidly out of his depth next. Andy King anyone?

Got back from Glasgow late last night and I am gutted. Even more so that I predicted that we wouldnt make it but england would. But Saturday night I finally realised after years of saying " I support two teams, Scotland and whoever is playing england", I dont really care about england any more.

English football exists in its own little bubble and thinks its much better than everyone else's. Whether its "The premiereleague is the best in the world" or thinking the national team is actually alot better than it really is.

As for how bad Scotland are... Id love to have seen how england would have done in our group. It always amazes me how england really struggled to qualify out of arguabley the easiest qualifying draw out of the lot.

Another thing is the whole thing that as players are scottish they cant be as good as the english. If Gordon was English the whole country would be masturbating over how good he is, but as he is scottish, no-one south of he border notices. Alan hutton has turned into a top class rightback and I heard a rumour over the weekend that Man Yoo were sniffing about. McManus is a top class centre back who is head and shoulders above Jolean fucking Lescott and quite possibly on a par with John Terry. But again, he isnt english is he??? :-))(

Oh and for the record 99% of Scotland fans dont hate the english. granted some idiots do. Most want to see england get beat as you are our biggest rivals, just the same way you love to se germany or argentina get beat. And a large proportion dont really give a flying fuck either way, but do get pissed off at having everything that is england rammed down our throats.

Anyway. Cant wait for the WC draw. After our great improvment over the last couple of years, and in moving up to the 2nd seeding pot again, I fully expect to get at least a play off place for 2010, and depending on who we get as first seeds, possibly even automatic qualification.

This coming from a country that gave us the classic "Dont come back too soon". What was the effort for Mex 86 called?  Or Italia90 or even USA 94. Ah the last two were called" We did nee qualify but we will sing aboot it any hoo" :D

Sorry my mistake, you did qualify for Italia90 and got put out by the mighty football nation of Costa Rica

All this England vs. Scotland crap is really grating my nerves now. It's just so tedious.

Please stop it.

Much love.

This Costa Rica "shock" is a load of bollocks.  Why not go and log on to some Swedish site and take the piss out of them for losing to Costa Rica too in the same tournament.

I prefer to bring up the record of the fastest goal ever scored in world cup history, by some fella called Davide Gualtieri for San Marino against some other diddy team

Are we talking about the actual World Cup or the qualifying that the game was played in?

And i do believe we ended up winning 6-1 which is more than you usually get against the Faroes.
