Surely earning something is better than nothing especially whilst they still need to keep fit and train at other clubs. Why don't they just join a shit club and tear up the league and enjoy their football and earn a bit at the same time. A higher league manager would surely prefer a player match fit if looking to recruit them.
So come on robert huth, james collins and darren bent. get and sign! There must be some players that still like to play for the love of the game. Lee Trundle for example, having fun in lower leagues and smashing it every week. barely any former big names in the lower leagues.
