Title: Swindon Town Vs Accrington Official Matchday thread.
Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Saturday, February 25, 2012, 04:09:24
If A mod could move it in the morning when they awake that would be lovely, figured it would be better to start one in the wrong place then let some other fucker start one in the morning!

So, Club record if we win.
Easy!

2-0 to us.

Happy Days!

This is a should win game, lets not slip on the proverbial banana skin!

We've won the last eight, they've lost the last three with a new manager.

4-0

And I've got Swindon to score 2+ in 1st half, 6/1.

3-0 Connell 2 and Cibocchi

How's the weather looking?

Clear skies, south-south westerly breeze, 5 mph high pressure. Min temp 12 overnight with high of 25-27. UV index 5 so bring some factor 30 sunblock. Lager being served @ + 2 degrees along with pitchers of Pimms in the county ground car park next to the picnic tables with red and white parasols open air BBQ'S and hog roast vendors.

Perfect day for football. Any other questions?

I imagine this will be a classic 'park the bus' kind of game (I really hate that expression, I can't believe I used it) I expect their new gaffer will have them quite well organized and it will be hard going until about 10 mins before half time. Then a bit of Rooney wing wizardry will undo them.

3-0 Rooney, Benson, Connell

Missing my 2nd home league game of the season - other one was Hereford, so hopefully no repeat there!

Going to be another tight one I think, but I have faith in the team now that we'll get by.

Gone for 2-0 in the prediction league but I've only got the score right twice this season and both times I forgot to enter my prediction, so there's no chance of that being the score!

Our last 2 wins have been touch & go, so I hope no one is taking this game lightly.  I don't predict; I just hope.  Fingers crossed.  Let's start pulling away.

3-0, we are through our dodgy spell now Ardiles.

No you are quite right, the reason 8 wins in a row is a record is because it is bloody difficult to be brilliant week in week out. What I like is the fact we have dug in and picked up results. I think we will have too much for Accrington, but it will be anything but easy.

My remaining worry is when we get to the business end of the season. Got a young squad, I hope they can deal with the expectation and pressure. So far so good.

An early goal for us will open the flood gates but the longer it remains 0 - 0 the natives around me in the Arkells will no doubt start moaning and getting on the players backs. I reckon it will be the former with our lads coming out of the blocks at 100mph and getting an early goal to settle the nerves. 3 - 0 to Town Rooney,Benson and Ritchie

Lee Nicholls is making his League debut today, hes been out on loan at Screwsbury and Harltepool and not deemed good enough for a start by them so maybe the occassion will be too much for him and he crumbles and lets in a record 10 goals.

And then I woke up.

Actually this could happen, the highest scoring game I have seen with Swindon was an 8-0 hammering of Bury in 79, scores like these don't come around too often these days but they do happen occassionally and it never hurts to dream.

A more likely scenario is the one suggested by Nev that he plays a blinder and the Milk Boys park the team coach in front of the goal and we don't find a way past them.

He says "....if I don't drink lots of milk then I'll only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley"., hence drinking load to avoid playing for a nobody. If they were any good they would have heard of them.

Agree they'll come here and park the bus, so a slightly frustrating game that we eventually win 2-0!

I can confirm that I saw the AS bus heading down Drove Rd towards the CG at about 10.45. So I guess the bus will be parked to unload the their kit at least before returning to probably the Marriot to collect the players. Then it will return to the CG and park the bus again.

By Huddersfield's logic, that means you haven't missed any.

Makes sense though - Ferry back, Devera back, Smith presumably injured so Risser in, Connell has earned his start... Not sure why Kennedy is in for Cibo but happy enough that he is

With games every Saturday/Weds going to expect a degree of rotation I guess. Pleasing that we have cover of a decent standard pretty much all over the pitch.

Exactly. Five changes, and if anything the team looks stronger than the one that just beat the division's (other) form team

Good side! Kennedy offers a bit more in an attacking sense IMO so can see why he is playing today against a team who we are expecting to park the bus, Risser deserved his start after the calming influence he had on Tuesday

As for the game, we should win but I have a feeling it will be a frustrating afternoon.
Reckon we will nick it 1-0, with a free kick or penalty

Paolo...

- Very angry. Second half was rubbish. Attitude was wrong. Don't know why it happened.
- Some people lose their humility and desire when they get to the top (think he's referring to Ferry)
- The 2nd half was the opposite of my desire for the way we play. This is not the way to play
- I know more than others what can happen if you lose your humility
- I hope they can understand today's attitude was wrong, and prepare for Tuesday in the best way
- Benson has done well, he's a fantastic professional, he works hard, he's a perfect example for his team mates
- For the first time, I'm too angry to make decisions. I want to go away and think about things, do my homework, make sure I don't make mistakes in judgement
- I'd rather go up than break records, but I'm very happy with the points
- I'm focusing on the attitude because I know my players and we saw what happened at Torquay
- I want to stay here for many years to come. We will talk about my contract, and I will give my blood for Swindon because the feeling atht I have with the fans, board, staff, players is fantastic
- I don't want people to speculate. Go and buy STs because the board have good plans. I can't promise to be here for the next few years and to take us to the Championship, I can just keep doing my job

Pretty easy win, nice to see Accrington try and play some football rather than rough us up and play it long.

Some negatives: Di Canio seemed to get annoyed with Connell and Ferry (for trying stuff, and quite unfairly in my eyes) and as such was always going to sub them - i don't think those changes helped us at all.

Risser plays when the opposition are physical hoof-merchants. Today, they weren't, and as such they passed the bal around him and he was fucking dire again. He needed to go off instead of Ferry.

The two blokes sat behind me were the biggest annoyance however. It was like listening to a pair of lobotomy patients loudly discussing anything but the game. Thanks to them, i knew all the Premiership scores and scorers, and that the Queens fucking Tap now has a dodgy Greek decoder showing all the premier league games. And when it came to the Town, they talked complete shit. Loudly. In my ear. For the whole cunting game. If they turn up on Tuesday and do the same, i'll flip a coin to decide whether to commit a double murder, or to throw steaming hit Bovril in my own face to distract me from their utter bollocks.

Anywho, a nice comfortable win, which probably didn't take too much out of us physically. The run continues.

This worries me. It looked like he had a bit of a go for Ferry having the nerve to try and pass the ball to our striker when there was an easier ball on. Ferry's pass completion is top notch.

They'd better kiss and make up and not freeze Ferry out. Our midfield is twice as good with him than without, and I want to win the JPT.

All rather comfortable today, bar a horror few minutes in the first half when Accy had 3 chances in a row.

Accy were a bit toothless but tried to play some football which was good to see.

3 somewhat dodgy performances in a row and 9 points!

Risser plays when the opposition are physical hoof-merchants. Today, they weren't, and as such they passed the bal around him and he was fucking dire again. He needed to go off instead of Ferry.

Di Canio was shouting and gesturing angrily to Connell from quite early in the first half.  We thought he might change him at half time.  He didn't seem to start on Ferry until a bit later on, but seemed to be in quite a bad mood from the outset. I didn't hear his interview, but by all accounts he wasn't happy.  I wonder if the FL Show interviewed him?

The shape was definitely lost after he made the substitutions and I thought we looked far worse.  What's the betting neither start on Tuesday.

We could have been 3 up quite early on, but had Foderingham to thank for it not being 1-1 after he made two good saves.  We wasted a lot of chances and all credit to Accrington who kept going and didn't just play long ball either.

Anyway, 9 points out of 9 with below par performances is all that matters.  It really is in our hands now.

Good routine win - 3 points in the bag. Di Canio needs to calm down a bit but that`s not easy being an Italian. No reason to think this run won`t go on and on. Was it only a year ago when I was asking myself what the hell I was thinking of turning up every week in the vain hope of seeing us score a goal let alone win. Lets enjoy every precious minute I say... ;)

Great first half and we had ample opportunity second half to open it out. Ok the second half wasn't great but after recent games you can understand them backing off. PDC sets the bar so high but I hope it's not at the expense of the players being pissed off.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Accrington Official Matchday thread.
Post by: cheltred69 on Saturday, February 25, 2012, 19:22:00
Hopefully the players have worked with di Canio long enough now to know what he is like and what he demands.
I expect that he'll make absolutely clear to the "offenders" why he's pissed off and then focus on helping them to improve.
From his comments on Ferry after the Shrews game, it's clear he values him but he will be pushing for constant improvement from all players.  Ferry should know that and take the criticism and show in training that he's up for it.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Ferry start again on Tuesday.

Sat in the Arkell's today, very exciting, lots of polite applause but a comp is not to be sniffed at I guess. The redeeming factor is it's a much better view than the TE. Missed Leefer and Boo's take on things tho

Pretty easy victory today, took our foot off the gas in the second which was a half to forget really. Would have left Connell on as he definitely offers more than Murray with his hold up play. Benson did well with his goals, Rooney had a good game, thought Ferry was ok as well, my MOM was McCormack again, does everything very calmly. At this stage of the season three points is the most important thing

Was quite impressed with their no 17 who ever he might be, he played well second half

I think the club should have someone video Di Canio and his reactions every match, and put it on the OS. It would be hilarious. His reaction to Connells effort in the first half, was one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a Swindon game.

Which is no bad thing. Many, many times in the past I've found myself really pissed off at a particularly lethargic performance (I'm not commenting on today's performance as I didn't even hear the commentary) Then I've found myself even more pissed off at the manger's reaction (whoever it may have been at the time) who just brushes it under the carpet.

So as long as he doesn't go too over to the top (which, judging by his comments, I don't think he will) I think it is this attitude which will get us over the line.

He gave them a bit of a caning after the Rovers game and it didn't do them any harm then.

PDC's post match reaction was not OTT in the slightest, he didn't raise his voice once.

And yeah I totally agree, it's great to have a manager that wants to maintain high standards all the time. Letting a win getting in the way of a bad performance could set a bad precedent.

They are shitting themselves after today's rubbish against the mighty Macclesfield - they fear what is coming and so they should. We steamrollered them at home and they fluked a win, we have a much better side now!!!

I was sitting not far from the dugouts and I also thought Ferry asked to come off. He looked really washed out and could still be getting over his illness but agree that him and Paolo never spoke when he did come off. Didn't think Connell had a good first half but we seemed to miss him when he was replaced.

I read (heard) the interview as nothing more than a manager of a successful team attemptiong to keep his players' feet on the ground on a day when, relatively speaking, the performance was as good as it could have been.  There has also been plenty of praise and 'we will win this league' in recent weeks.

Paolo sounds measured and in control.  Week by week, he is dismantling his early season caricature as a hothead who would lose his way at the slightest provocation.  How many times have we heard about the 'Di Canio circus' recently?  Not many.

On a slightly different note, had we been stuck with the squad Paolo signed pre-season with a couple of loans I wonder where we would be now.

I suspect sniffing the twitching arse end of the playoffs.  Albeit frustratingly so.

I think a few of the foreign lads that have since departed or are sniffing on the fringes of the squad would have bedded in better than they had/have done due to more game time but that’s pure speculation.

Anyway, point I was getting to rather ramblingly so is that the board have been superb in backing the manager and allowing him to bring in a significant number of replacements / additional signings.

I think it was Triseros that said on here a couple of months back that for the first time in a long time (if ever?) all of the ducks are lined up from playing squad through to management and board level to allow for success.  And long may it continue.

Top result today as well.  I just hope Paolo doesn’t lose it to much in the morning; a lot of the lads hardly have the experience to know better.

Key point Dazzzza. Di Canio has quite rightly been taking the plaudits over the last few months but at the same time he has to be absolutely delighted with the support he as had from the Board which has been absolutely top drawer - and let's not forget, apart from the players he's been allowed to bring in, he's been able to hold on to the likes of Caddis and Ritchie which, in days gone by would most certainly not have happened.

Paolo knows that he and the Club are 'in a good moment' and he's not going to do anything to fuck that up.

I can't help but think of Nigeria everytime Benson plays. Because of that Cousin Benson guy off Fonejacker.

On the game. Very easy win, we got the 2 goals and then just saw the game out. Accrington wouldn't have scored if they were still out there now. As Boromir once said, "One does not simply score at the county ground".

Like everyone else, I enjoyed the 1st half, with some excellent football played.  was certainly concerned about what happened with the Ferry substitution - as well as no handshake with PdC, his body language in the dugout made it clear he was not happy.  Risser was definitely off the pace, and i thought that, although he worked hard, Connell didn't do a lot right.  Murray has come in for a lot of stick both around where I was sitting and on 'This is....'  I agree that he is not the finished article, but he won the ball well and worked very hard with it, but sadly the end product did not quite make it.

I thought PdC was over the top in the interview, but, his passion is such that when the team as a whole lose it, as they did in the 2nd half, (and I do think the low sun had a lot to do with it - their coach was signalling to them to get the ball in the air, because it was causing the defence real problems), he is going to have a go at them.  I thought the back four were very good, with Caddis and McC outstanding, Ferry and Rooney very good in parts, and Benson a giant - although Caddis throws high in the air to him all through the 2nd half became a bit predictable.

Accrington played good football in 2nd half, but lacked the killer instinct - most of the saves Fods made were from balls that missed their strikers, and had they connected better with balls into the box, we would have been in much more trouble.

But 3 more points is never bad.

I think this will be a wake up call for a lot of Town players that Di Canio really means what he says about taking us as far as we can go. He's all about sticking everything on the pitch, all the time, not holding back, and we did do that 2nd half. From the Town End didnt see a lot of action really. Im not complaining with the performance, but only the sub Murray was giving it everything 2nd half. We are getting to the stage where teams will roll over if they go a goal down at the CG, and settle for not getting beat 4 or 5 nil.

Forget next saturday, tuesday is our game in hand, and our chance to put real daylight between ourselves and the rest. Burton were pretty good at their place so it wont be easy.

Ferry and PDC had a full-on row early in the second half, lots of aggressive arm-waving from both camps - he was certainly not happy with something. Then when Ferry misplaced one more pass he subbed him.

I just hope they work things out before Tuesday because without him we have absolutely zero creativity through the middle. As perfectly demonstrated when Cox came on and touched the ball about 2.5 times (the .5 was a ricochet off another player so does not really count).

Yeah I saw this. People keep saying Ferry asked to come off, he certainly didn't! PDC and Ferry had a massive ongoing argument for about ten minutes during the second half, which resulted in him being subbed and no hand shake. When his number went up you could see how pissed off Ferry was!
For me Rissers lack of mobility really stood out yesterday, offers a good aerial presence in midfield but he seemed to struggle in places

Comfortable enough win yesterday. We played some great football in the first half and could have had a hat full. I hope Ferry and PDC can sort it out, because we lack so much creativity without him.

Benson had a great game and I thought Ritchie looked really dangerous every time he got the ball. There was no way there were 80 Accrington fans there!

I sit about 20 feet from the dug out. Topboi certainly did not ask to come off but to suggest that there was a full blown argument is slightly OTT.
SF & Connell certainly appeared to take the brunt of the flak but Benno was also singled out. SF DID answer back and was clearly unhappy but NOT aggressive. I did cringe when he started to answer back but there was only ever going to be one winner in that debate.
It appears to me and a number of others that Topboi does not like playing with Risser. Whilst you can't fault Rissers commitment his skill levels are an absolute minimum. If you didn't know better you would say that he was the Samsung win a pro winner!

Easy win for us though in the end. We didnt even need to get out of first gear in the second half so why knacker ourselves out with more big games coming up in the next few weeks.

I suspect the issue is one that often comes with Success.  We have some exceptionally good players in the team now, annd playing as a team has got us where we are.  But most of the players are young and want to demonstrate their individual credentials, and thus it is easy for discipline to be lost as a result.  The brilliant trio of Caddis, Ferry and ritchie was not working as well as it can do yesterday second half.  I am not skilled enough to know why, but my guess is that this has something to do with it.

Title: Re: Swindon Town Vs Accrington Official Matchday thread.

I think we all know by now that no one wins an argument with Di-Canio. I think the situation has to sort itself out though. Whilst we've all seen for ourselves that Di-Canio is a fiery, passionate individual (I guess we all knew that anyway) he has also proved that he is certainly not stupid.

Slinging Clarke, Timlin and Kerrouche out on their ear was one thing but he knows full well that Ferry is far too important to this team to be falling out with him on a long term basis. And besides, these kinds of incidents must occur at every club around the country. I'm sure they'll work things out between them.

Just about sobered up now. In the first half we wiped the floor with them apart from a 5 minute spell. The second half was crap but we'd done the job already and if they had scored we'd have gone up the other end and put one in.
I don't think we got out of 2nd gear all game and were probably in first gear for the second half.
A very comfortable easy win.
I can understand what PdC is saying but I think its a bit harsh given we're playing twice a week. I'd take the same again in the resot of our games.
Ardiles - my 4 year old nephew really enjoyed himself. He had a bag of sweets and his dads mobile phone to play some games on and was no trouble at all. It looks like he might well be going a bit more often now. his dad is Spurs so I think its my uncle duty to put him on the right path.

Odd - just checked the stats on the BBC and we had 58% possession overall. Didn't feel that way to be honest, maybe just the effect of the second half. To me it was a very 'italian' win, getting the 2-0 lead so early and never looking like conceding. More goals would have been nice, and there were some chances. I also think the treadmill of Sat, Tues is starting to impact on them (albeit we have won 9 league games in a row... still can't quite believe that). Accrington looked exactly what they are, a mid table team who will finish mid table.
