I'm a bit more worried about this one than even hudds away for some reason. We should win comfortably, but a 1-1 wouldn't surprise me. I'll go for 7-0 though.

Home win. This could be a hammering. I'll say a comfortable 3-0.

I really hope we take it seriously and run out comfortable winners. There's always that niggling feeling that the run has to end somewhere. Pericard to score tonight.

This has the potential to be the game we've been waiting for where we finally tear a team (other than Leeds) apart! I'm not underestimating them, as they won't just roll over, but if we play at our best it should be 3 points all the way.

Title: Re: Official matchday thread Swindon Town v Stockport County

We're letting our guards down  :)

I'll continue to throw caution to the wind. I'll also throw every cliche about how "if we want to go up we have to win these sort of games", just for good measure.

This evening won't be pretty.

Predictions like this make me nervous.  There are going to be plenty of banana skins out there between now and the beginning of May.  I'll go for a 2-1 win (with fingers firmly crossed).

1-1 draw, 6,667 crowd with Austin scoring and us having all the pressure going a goal up early on and County scraping a very late equalizer.

Title: Re: Official matchday thread Swindon Town v Stockport County
Post by: Plumstead Red on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 13:40:11
By the way, I hope tonight the crowd really sing up. We can be the 12th man, and we shouldn't rely on matches against the big teams (Leeds, Wovers, Narwich) for there to be a good atmosphere in the ground. This is exactly the type of night when a noisy crowd can make a difference.

It's either a shit draw or a pasting for Stockport, depending on which Swindon turn up.

So, 1-1 or 5-1  6895

That pitch was a joke though. We couldn't pass the ball as we would have liked. And we were'nt very good.

Stockport were awful then, and they still are now.

If anyone else says "typical Swindon" or "same old same old" I'm going to go mad.  How is the Swindon Town of this season anything like the Swindon Town of previous seasons.  Since 03/04 and the attacking prowess of Mooney and Parkin have we had anything remotely this good.  It seems our fans are determined to put a downer on our success, although I suppose such is the nature of football fans.

I am still in complete wonderland and am shocked this run has continued as long as it has.  Looking at the recent live table just posted and the relative form of the top 6, we should be gunning for the title!  Maybe the Southampton defeat has derailed Norwich, Leeds haven't seemed the same since their shock win at United and Charlton are in freefall.  The other teams are nothing to be scared of, and with the goals we have in Paynter and Austin, the sky is the limit.

Yes we've conceded late goals, yes we don't keep clean sheets every week, but fuck me if this is typical Swindon then long may it continue!!

1. My "typical Swindon" comment was said more in jest than anything.
2. The recent live table was incorrect, but yes, we're going well and should keep our eyes on the top 2
3. As for Norwich, it sounds like they're destroying Southend tonight but haven't got a goal yet, so derailment seems an exaggeration

Sorry, I'm in a pedantic mood. I think it's because my boiler has broken and it currently feels like -17C in my flat.

R4E - wasn't necessarily directed at you - just can't believe the negative vibes on the forum and in the stands when we should be pinching ourselves still.  Remember how you felt after Gills away back in August....  Then contrast that to now, and at the final whistle of Leeds at home.

Swindon fuck up my arse.... 4-1.

I do get the feeling that Wilson may expect to see Paynter step up and be more prolific, maybe play with one up and 2 wide.

Good game tonight. A little flat at times but deffo entertaining. First half we started really well. Our passing was quality and we got the goal to take the lead. For the first 20 minutes we really went at them and looked dangerous. I think Stockport probably showed us a little too much respect and backed off us which let us play. We got the 2nd just before half time thanks to a cock up in their defence. Easy finish for Billy. Then the ref (who I thought was dreadful) gave them a free kick that never was on the edge of the box and they're back in it.

2nd half started and it was mostly them. We sat back and they had a real go. We needed to get settled and when we did we were comfortable again. 2 good goals to seal what in the end was a comfortable win. Scorline may have flattered us a bit but we did dominate the first half. Really impressed with Morrison and Paynter tonight. I guess we have come to expect it from the latter but it was like Greer was never missing at the back. Good win and another 3 points. Catching Charlton fast now!

Also Stockport played very well. Surprised they were that good tbh and they have showed some real spirit and never gave up.

I dont think Morrison took a single throw in actually.

Ritchie to me, looked rusty and a yard off the pace. Always wanted more time on the ball than he had. Ran into players alot and passing was sloppy at best. In his defence the last time he played (for Notts County) was 28th of December.

In the 1st half we never got out of 1st gear. Our passing was brilliant but it was like a training exercise where we kept the ball and Stockport looked absolute dogshit. In the 1st 20 of the 2nd it was roles reveresed where Stockport  played really well and we were shit. The last 25 however was all us again. Great finish by Paynter for no 4. MOM for me was JPM. Morrison looked out of sorts in the 2nd half and his heading ability thruoghout the game was Kanyukaish. Saying that he did one absolute quality slide tackle in the 1st half. He just needs a few matches and no we didn't use his long throw. Ritchie looked a little boy lost but agasin he needs games. We lost a lot when Douglas went to right back.

Title: Re: Official matchday thread Swindon Town v Stockport County

@gk_nash Matt Rickie had a very average game. Needs some game time to get into it as he had a couple of neat touches so shows promise. We missed Ward's work rate.
--------
The first half was so easy tonight it was like a training game where Stockport couldn't get the ball and when they did we took it back again at will. But it was so easy, and with an early goal, we lacked the urgency. The second goal was a bit lucky in that Sheehan's shot from an impossibly tight angle was spilled by the keeper at the feet of Paynter. Then on a rare attack a silly foul on the edge of the area lead to Stockports goal direct from the free kick.

Half time needs a mention as somebody from the Town end skipped over the barriers to get a ball they were playing with and got bundled by about 6 stewards. Did he get away?

Second half Stockport gave it a go. We weren't helped by the loss of Ward and Amankwha (tight hamstring) with Douglas slotting is as make shift right back. We were under pressure and I started to worry a bit, not least when Lucas picked up a messed up clearance at it was adjudged to be a backpass by  the Collina wannabe referee.

But we weathered the storm, Easton started to get a grip in the middle and we scored the killer goal when JPM looked to cross, went outside his man in the area and floated a cross onto Ferry's head. Paynter then got in on the act again with a slightly deflected shot  from the edge of the area.

So in conclusion the first half was so comfortable, the second half initially less so. But we scored 4 and deserved the win.

This is spot on. I wasn't sure at all about Morrison getting MOM. In the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, it seems like their black guy up front had sussed him and and he was getting past him too eaily.
I actually thought Austin had a brilliant game tonight, didn't put a foot wrong, and again won pretty much every header.

Half time was the best part of the match.  Fair play to the lad who eventually got away after being pulled over by about 10 stewards and then pulled back in the TE by his mates.  Bet he's got a few bruises tonight!  Just a though, watching it unfold from that end of the DRS, what a provocative cunt that tall steward with 7 on his back was.  Pity somebody hadn't downed him!  They even called the police in, who left again shortly after.

Title: Re: Official matchday thread Swindon Town v Stockport County

Fair play to Stockport they kept hassling and pressing us; we looked comfortable for the first 25 but for all the chances / opportunities we were only one goal ahead. The second half started as expected because Stockport scored late in the first half, they pressed us and chased everything, and for a good 10 mins I thought our players could sense the unease in the crowd. As soon as we got our two goal cushion back you could see the confidence come back almost straight away. Thought Ritchie did OK considering but he was out of position a few times when we needed him on the wing. Again following on from Carlisle I didn't think it was a game we were going to lose but I don't think it was as straight forward as Saturday even though we won 4-1 tonight. Special mention to the 83 who travelled down tonight from Stockport

The keystone cops entertainment at half time was fucking hilarious. Flair play to the lad who went on the pitch, volleyed the ball back into the TE, waved his arms like he'd just scored a goal, then out foxed the over zealous cunts in fluro yellow as they stumbled around like dads army actors with rigor mortice;-)

Kudos to the lads who pulled him away from their clutches, just as the real hard men in orange jackets swung in for some action.

Not sure if the leader of the cunts - Shithouse - was involved, but the stumpy little fat cunt with the goaty beard deffo wanted some. I'd love to see that mother-fucker put on his fat arse.

The game was good as well :D We took the piss first half, soaked up the pressure early in the 2nd half and thoroughly deserved the points against a side who shouldn't be languishing at the foot of the table.

We missed JD in the middle after the subs, Morrison was cool as fuck apart from when the geezer up front pulled him around a bit and got him booked, and I thought Easton slotted in well. JPM and Ferry busy as fuck, Cuthbert his usual self.

The squad suddenly looks like it has some depth with the fringe players offering Wilson real alternatives if, or when, he needs them.

Still keep pinching myself that this season is really happening to us!

the first 45 minutes last night was the most one sided game i think i have ever witnessed at the county ground.

Pleased with the result last night.

Played really well in first 20 minutes and could have been 2-3 goals up.  Then all of a sudden Swindon drop the tempo and lacked any cutting edge.   If we kept it at 2-0 half time then we would have probably one on to score 5 or 6.

There goal late in the first half was a bit of a bummer and i think our players looked nervous at the beginning of the second half.  Hiowever once Ferry scored it was always goma over

Didnt rate Easton when he came on.  His positional player was crap, and it was funny seeing Sheehan giving Easton a bollocking ever 2 minutes.

Not to sure why Morrison was named man of the match.  Did one good tackle in the whole game that i saw.  Hes very competennt at heading the ball but the difference between him and Greer are their positional play.   Greer understands that he is slow, yet always gives himself that extra one or two yards headstart on the oposing attacker.  Morrison was getting done all the time for pace when the stockport attacker was left 1 vs 1 with him.  However o guess the more games Morrison gets under his belt, the better he will be.

Hoping for at least 4 points from these next 2 games to keep the run going

Also a big well done to those Stockport fans for coming to the game.  Those 86 people are the hardcore fans of that club

can't remember that last time i got our scoreline right.wish i'd had a few quid on it now......

I bet on it.  :D

Think I was talking to TEFer at the station. He got the train to Bristol with me. We were talking about how he has a mate who is a millwall fan so he's sat in every stand of the new den and how we both really want town to play and beat City again. Someone on here, yeah?

Not so sure about Easton getting bollocked, but Sheehan was certainly giving Ritchie the benefit of his thoughts several times.  Thought Sheehan had a tremendous game last night and must have been close for mom along with JP who never stopped working.

Good match - excellent result!

Considering he hadnt played much lately Morrison did well (not a MofM performance tho!) - Cuthbert looked massively strong at the back tho along with Lucas.

The injury to Amankwaah unsettled us a little as we missed Douglas's steadying influence in midfield however Craig Easton is looking a lot better now after all his injuries.

Austin and Paynter terrified them up front - especially Billy who could have had a hat full ... Ritchie disappointed a little on the wing - seems a bit lightweight but having not played that much and Ward playing so well in that position it was always going to be hard for him

Word on the attendance for a tuesday night - considering only 80 away fans - VERY VERY positive - we look a club going places at present and I hope it continues ..

Onwards and upwards ....

PS what the hell was going on in the TE at half time? why run on the pitch at all was what was going on in my mind??? Having said all that it was really funny to watch!

It was Ritchie geting the abuse. Sheehan wanted hm to stay out on the wing and not drft inside as Stockport were using the space to get 2 on 1 aganst him. Ward offers him more cover, it's what you get from a good left back.

Good win last night, although i thought they would nick a goal when it was 2-1. Was so releaved when Ferry made it 3-1.

Best half time ever i think!!  :D

Can't wait for Orient on Saturday now, hopefully we'll take a fair few

My Pompey supporting mate tells me that Ritchie has two faults that need rectifying, he wont take players on, even though he has the beating of them and that he ALWAYS comes inside rather than going down the line.

Both faults can be remedied by good coaching.

Big mention for Cuthbert who was outstanding and Austin who proved he's not just about scoring-was a constant thorn in Stockport's side.JPM not far behind those two.Dont get the Stockport love-in,thought they were clueless in their efforts to create anything.nice free-kick though.I thought Easton slotted in nicely too, however we do need a right back as we dont want Douglas out of the middle too often, specially against the better sides.Missed the half time shenanegans queuing for HCbut my lad loved it!Ferry loves it here doesnt he?His interview on RS was brilliant,he was buzzing.Oh and the "Red Army,Red Army"was tremendous.(without the clapping)

Apologies if this has been discussed, but why did Wilson replace Amankwaah with Douglas?

We had a centre back and left back on the pitch that can and have played at right back this season, whilst on the bench we had a centre back and a left back (who can also play centre back). So why not put a defender on?

Sure it worked out in the end but I thought we looked a lot worse after the change, losing out in midfield as well as on the right hand wing. So does anyone know the logic behind Wilson's decision?

I think he thought Johnson, their left winger was a threat, so Douglas would cut him out.

Probably because Scott Cuthbert probably had the worse game of his life at right back, so I can understand why Wilson didnt put him there.

Added to the fact he would be breaking up the centre back pairing and most importantly Cuthbert has been as solid as a fucking rock in the heart of our defence.

Moving our best defender out of position would be, not just stupid but Andy King stupid.

Sheehan played right back and clearly wasnt comfortbale there and Douglas has played there plenty of times before.

We lost a bit of shape and the right back over lapping but that was it. Stockport didnt trouble Douglas at right back at all.

Sheehan was superb last night. Austin didnt really get a chance, but I thought his link up play was excellent, rarely loses the ball. What can you say about Paynter? Just looking so determined and confident. Morrison looks a much better player than when he last played for Swindon. Another indication of how important it is for young players to play League football.

Thought Wilson was experimenting with Ritchie and Easton, but obviously Amankwaah was injured. I felt a bit sorry for Ritchie because he struggled a bit when he came on, which is understandable. Hes probably played a lot of reserve/youth football and you get less time on the ball in the real thing. His head went down a bit. But its great to see a Premier League youth player struggling to get into our team. Im sure he has been taken aback by the quality of Ward and the team in general. But he still looks an exciting player, looking forward to seeing him again.

Fair play to Stockport, they could have given up, but actually gave us a bit of a game 2nd half. Town End started making some noise and the players seemed to go to bits! Whats that all about?

Hopefully thats the end of the really cold evening games for this season? Has been a cold winter, hopefully the warmer weather will bring out the fans? Although I thought the attendance last night was more encouraging?

I prefer to think of it as us sticking with them whilst we absorbed the pressure from Stockport. After that they didn't have much left and we buried them.  :D

Actually that rings a bell - didn't Douglas play right back at Leeds a fair bit last season?

What can you say about Paynter? Just looking so determined and confident.

Paynter seemed to be shooting on every opportunity, even if it maybe wasn't the best option. He's done this before, mainly when he's got a couple of goals and going for a hat trick. Not sure whether this is good or bad.

On the one hand you could call it greedy, especially when there are better options. But on the other, its good to see a striker that confident and firing shots in which is something we sometimes seem to be lacking. Though his shoot on sight doesn't normally pay off much it did get him his 2nd goal last night.

Yes Paynter has shown he can score from further out now which isn't something he used to do.

I will never complain about a player having a pop at goal. It's something over the years which we've never really done enough. You don't win the raffle if you don't buy a ticket ..etc
