My daughter has been given a laptop(vista) The problem is viewing the internet wirelessly. It can find the router and connect but it doesn't work when trying to view stuff online. When connected by lan it is fine. Never used vista before so am i missing something obvious? I'm buggered if i can get around this on my own(been trying for a few days now)

Have you unticked the 'work offline' option in the tools menu on your web browser?

Whe you say connect, I assume you just mean you get the "connected" status bars. Have you actually managed to log on to the routers configuration page for example?
The most likely causes are 1) wireless security setting issue 2) Laptop wireless left in unusual configuration.
Lets address 2 first, as its easyish to check. When connected to wireless router:
1. click on the Windows (start) button
2. In the box that says "start search", type cmd.exe and press return
3. In the "dos box" that opens type "cmd.exe"
4. type ipconfig.exe /all
Post back what it puts out.
Depending on the result we'll check that the laptop is set to get an IP address via DHCP next (that's dead easy too)

You need to put the /all after ipconfig like:
ipconfig /all
(the .exe doesn't matter)

tried it again and got this message.... inconfig.exe is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable programme or batch file.

That's because it's ipconfig, not inconfig

OK so it has and IP address that looks good. This means that the router and the laptop are talking to each other to some degree. Can you just do "ipconfig /all" and check there is a DNS addres, it will look like: DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.102 but with a diffrent value (either 192.168.1.1 or a real address, but not 10.x.x.x or 169.x.x.x - that's bad) ------------------------------------------------------------ Now we need to work out whether the issue is wireless connectivity (interference), or something else. 1. Do you have any other wireless devices that work. Its not hard and fast, but if they work it reduces the risk of there being an interferer. 2. Can you talk to the router. Literally type into the web browser everything in between the quotes : " http://192.168.1.1" .

I fucking hate Vista/7. I forget the number of times I've fucked with them and tried to get wireless working across various networks and had issues with public/private and what not. Networking used to be so simple.

DNS looks ok.
If you have a firewall enabled (Window Firewall probably) try disabling it and trying again.

You connected to the router using http://192.168.1.1 ? Did you definitely have the cable unplugged when you did so? The "ipconfig/all" had the cable connected! Anyway there are absolutely no clues that I can see why things are going wrong, but at least we ruled a few out. Will think of the next step once you confirm http://192.168.1.1 via web browser (without cable).

If using IE click Tools-Internet Options-Connections-Lan Settings
Make sure the Proxy server box is not ticked
Also log into router and change the wireless channel
