Another one is Paul Evans, I remember him being a decent midfielder with an eye for goal. Didn't he break his leg after only about 10 appearances?

McGovern was integral to our play-off season under Wilson.

Jack Smith was always solid and is one of the very few in recent years to leave us to go on to a higher level.

Most of the names mentioned above weren't vaguely under-rated during their time here. Beauchamp and Jack Smith are good shouts as they proved their value elsewhere. On that basis you'd have to say we under-rated Mustapha Carayol, but I can't think of any others off the top of my head who we let go for little or nothing and went on to bigger things.

On the criterion of personal heroes that no-one else revered, I offer you Colin Bailie and Howard Pritchard. I was at an impressionable age. Oh and more recently, Philippe Cuervo.

Peter Coyne - not really underated at the time, but rarely gets mentioned in the "top players" type threads, and was for a few seasons the top scoring midfielder that we don't seemed to have had since.

Nicky Hammond.  Suffers from comparison with Fraser, and everyone seems to remember his horror shows as well, even after all these years.  But on his day, he was a very accomplished goalkeeper.  I'm fairly sure that he did keep Fraser out of the side for significant periods.

By default that support of Hammond sends him onto the over rated list surely  :hmmm:

Ian Woan was by far one of the most talented footballers I've seen in a town shirt, despite his age.

I swear I saw Paul McAreavey come of the bench and put in an insane half an hour in the 99/00 relegation season under Quinn. Just can't remember who we were playing or what really happened. And to be fair, apart from that possibly imagined 30mins, he was shit.

His display at Upton Park v WHU when we stole a 1-0 win was incredible and betters any Digby display I recall so he did keep out Digby for a few games sometimes but never for long as the howlers were not exactly few and far between.  Done ok down the M4 for himself since

I remember Fraser having a dodgy patch in early 1992/3 season and was replaced by Hammond for quite a while. Looking on swindon-town-fc it looks like he kept Fraser out from late September to early January that season.

Better shot stopper than Digby, but not as good at coming for crosses, and coudn't kick to save his life.

Away to Millwall at the Den. I wasn't there but I remember from the season highlights video him pulling off a string of unbelievable saves. He also had a preference for the black and purple keeper shirt (the Burmah triangle one) which beat the black and yellow one that Fraser preferred hands down.

Wasn't it Hammond that had a blinder of a game away to QPR when we were in the premier. We won 1-0 and it was down to some of his fantastic saves we managed to pull off the double over them.

Edit: Just looked at the stats and we actually won 3-1 there. Maybe it was the West Ham game that has been previously mentioned.

Did the thread say under rated by Swindon fans?.....generally under rated than Foley is a shoe in.....very under rated outside of Swindon i reckon.
Real class and really suprised a a bigger club didn't grab him while he was at the peak.

I thought it was generally accepted that he was a bit of a drinker. I seem to remember that there was an incident under Ossie that pretty much put the lid on his career at Town; when he turned up to get the coach for an away game still the worse for drink and Ardiles and Galvin turned him around and sent him home.

He turned up for a home game under Ossie and was told he wasn't in the squad of 13 for the game and was obviously still pissed, I mean wobbly walking type of pissed and went to get into his car to drive home when myself and 2 other stewards stopped him and talked him out of it and called a taxi for him to get him home as he was in no fit state to drive.

Great player on his day but would have got much further if his alcoholism wasn't as bad as it was.

Roy Carter....probably the last Danny Williams shrewd signing for 25K.  Played over 200 games, had a couple of seasons where he scored double figures from midfield, but could also play centre half if needs be. An integral part of decent sides of the Bob Smith era, if we could field a midfield equivalent of Carter, McHale, Kamara, this season we'd piss this league.

Sadly Roy missed a pen at the CG v Newport...which might have given us the extra 2 points to avoid the drop in 83, but hey-ho might have missed the Macari years, if we'd stayed up.

Some players need the drink to be as good as they are i reckon...Jimmy Greaves has admitted as much.

Ref Roy Carter.....a very cultured player i remember.

Always think of the 3-2 defeat at Leicester where he had a bit of a mare in the last 5 mins and we conceded 3 goals after being 2-0 up and a man down (Foley sent off).

This thread seems to be more about players that could have been easily in peoples top 10 if things had worked out a bit differently/if they had applied themselves better - in Foley's case - if he hasn't been a drinker. His goal away at Blackburn is one of my top town goals

Definately this.

I remember in an away game at Reading in 87 when he got knocked out cold in the first 15 mins and was walking around like he had been shot and totally dazed yet completed the game and played really well and we won 1-0 and afterwards he said he could remember nothing at all about the game.

No it was ipswich but it was a league cup game in the prem season.  Hammond came storming out of his area and missed the ball.  I think that is the game he is referring to.  I think that was the game that Fjortoft finally found his scoring boots that season too.  He went on a scoring run after that game.

Having said that maybe my memory is playing tricks on me.

Hammond fucked up massively in the Peterboro game too, came rushing out of the area and cost us a goal, it was a live TV game on a Sunday and happened when we were winning but ended up drawing 3-3 because of his mistake.

A game in which oooo Shaun taylor scored a hattrick, 2 for us and one for the Posh!
