I'm with Rusty. I was thinking Gazza but it could well have been Lineker. Swindon (under Hoddle I think) About that era, I think it may have been when Gorman was manager.

Indeed, if you read his autobiography, we'd agreed a deal to sign him as a kid, were expecting him to come for training, and at then last minute Soton stepped in, which was nearer to his Orcheston home, so he went there.
Don't forget Reg that under Smith and the money from the League Cup semi final we went for Channon and ended up with Peach

Coming to this late, but Rusty is correct about our bid to sig Lineker on a short term contract. Not sure whether Lineker would have considered, but I do remember Grampus 8 (do they even still exist?) objecting out of concern he might get injured.

Presumably the best time to sign him from his current club would be in March...

Only on thisis IIRC. He was at a pub team at the time and nobody had actually seen him play, but they were all 100% convinced he was the new Austin and that the club should write a blank cheque to get him. Bizarre.

He played a trial game for us and scored either 2 or 3, but it wasn't followed up.

I'm sure Wilson offered him a 6 month deal, but he wanted more so turned it down. I don't recall management being that bothered.
