Title: steven mcphee to sign on loan
Post by: lebowski on Sunday, March 18, 2007, 17:46:36
according to a message on thisisstfc.co.uk.

yes, i know.

very classy striker though, runs beyond the ball, finds space between midfield and attack, and - you'll like this bit - can score goals. if he really is one of the targets, and if he's still as good as he was for port vale a few seasons back, then he'll be a very impressive signing.

I'll believe it when I see it. Didn't he go off abroad somewhere? Its obviously all gone wrong if he's looking to come back here.

He did, he went to Beira Mar in portugal where it didnt work out and he's not really had a chance at Hull, but his goalscoring record at Port Vale was very impressive and alot of big clubs were chasing him back then, he would be a good signing for this league as he's a proven league one goalscorer.

He's barely featured for Hull this season - I'd deem it more realistic than other names mentioned like Leon Best.

My suspicisions is that Barry Corr is the player coming here but it could well be Stephen Mcphee, i would rather have Mcphee as he is proven but Corr cannot be any worse than Roberts.

Fair point, Sturrock did say he wanted to sign two strikers and a winger, i think that Sturrock said one of the strikers could be here long term which obviously suggests he is coming on loan with a view to a permanent move.

I would say Barry Corr and David Graham is fairly likely as they are both out of favour at wednesday, but yes it could be Corr and Mcphee.

Mcphee is a good striker. Remember him getting a couple in that epic 3-3 draw in March 04. Then he went to Beira-Mar in Portugal and did not do anything their. If this is true then i agree with rich and this is what we need.

Corrs hardly an exciting signing, he's been training with the squad for a bit anyway as alledgedly he's had a row with Laws at the Wendys when he was told he was shit and they didn't want him anymore. So Leeds didn't want him, Wednesday don't want him, Chesterfield have even turned him down. Never scored a league goal. I guess he's the Sturrocks version of Fola, give him a punt in the hope that the big lump might have something about him.

Mc'p's probably the "quality" player that Sturrock's promised us because we "deserve it", although he's only ever managed to average a reasonable games:goal ratio (nearly 3:1) at one club, Port Vale (about 40 in 130 or so games). Fans seem to like him though, seems to have a reputation as a skillful player.

Mind you,  a bit of a sicknote recently, only 21 appearances since the beginning of the 2004/5 season, so he might be a complete crock.

We may not score another goal from open play this season at this rate!

Christ when I think that there was a time I was dissappointed with the signing of Wayne Allison!

I'd sell my own grandmother for a player of his quality now.
Mind you she's been dead 15 years so that would be a bit of a bargain

Ah the Chief - thought he was a donkey at the slave traders, what I'd give for his aerial ability and workrate not - hard to believe we got £800k for him when he was 30+.

The fact that Leeds and wednesday dont want him dont bother me, they are obviousley much bigger clubs than us, and are 2 divisions higher (for the time being eh Dennis?)  It would probably be fair to say the vast majority of Leeds & Wendies rejects would be worth a look at in L2.

The fact that Chesterfield didnt fancy him isnt exactly encouraging though.

IF he does join us, then frankly he cant be any worse than Roberts has been for the past 2 months or so, so I'm all for it.  And Sturrock likened him to Crouchy when he was at wednesday, so he must be ace. and thats a FACT!

Look at Parkin's stats when he came to us though he hadn't done anything anywhere else ??

If it is McPhee as well then he is in the Roberts mould of being skilful and quick and would probably work well with a Big Man the difference is he can score goals whereas Roberts likes Penalty's for his goals ratio !!

Sturrock was talking about not having a partnership up front and if we go up Mcphee may stay with us, I would imagine Peacock will be used in midfield and Roberts will be used....in the reserves  :)

He's 6 foot 2 and Sturrock likes to play with wingers who can cross the ball into the box, so hopefully this guy is good in the air. The one drawback is that our midfielders and wingers are about as creative as a bunch of mannakins.

Just to prove Spireite fans know jack shit about forwards, they spent 2 seasons on the back of Caleb Folan, who they reckoned was a complete waste of space and utterly useless.....OK he only scored something like 6 goals in that time.....but he's now knocking in a few in the Prem and probably already paid off his half mill fee.with Wigan.

I think the hurt of Mooney's defection to the scum....compounded the disappointment of the end on 03/04.   It also clouded  rational analysis, at the time Mooney believed he'd done enough to merit a contract extension, then complained about his treatment.

On hindsight loooks like classic Newbury, got a bit alarmed over bonus payments, costs etc and so looked to trim the wage bill at the expense of the playing side.

Devlin left for QPR that season. The Mooney debacle was classic Newbury. Classic drip feed funding for the team.

Mooney did fall away. But even his performances in march were still far superior to the players we are putting out now. Not that it matters.

If we're breaking the "since the chief" rule, then my vote goes to Duncan "Postman Pat" Shearer. A fantastic header of the ball. Shame that when he jumped he barely left the ground.

Mooney tailed off at the business end of the season, but was great.

Although he was marking Virgo (or not, as the case may be) i still blame Reeves for the goal, as it was his messing around in our own corner that led to the throw in. If he'd hacked it up field towards one of our forwards the throw and resultant goal wouldn't have happened. To this day i remember saying "this throw will cost us".

What a horrible day that was.

It was an amazing day but for all the wrong reasons. Still, it's days like that, that are what being a football fan is all about and makes the good days that much better when they (eventually) come round.

In fact, I remember thinking at the time, at the end of the penalty shoot out, soaked to my very bone marrow and entering the advanced stages of hypothermia that (if a lived long enough) I would still be talking about that day in the pub in 20 or 30 years time. So much other stuff happened other than the game that day. Crazy

Thankfully(?) though I drove to Swindon to pick my ticket up because some unfortunates were promised that the tickets would be on the coach but in the end they weren't and were not allowed into the game.

For a few glourious minutes we were off to play the scum at Cardiff. Then shit happened. And we win less penaly shoot outs than England.

Oxford shootout was Zenith data systems - think Kerslake blasted one over the bar and nearly hit the rolex.

We did beat Millwall in the Auto Windscreens on a shootout, with Town legend Kevin Halliday grabbing one from the spot!

I saw us win a penalty shoot out in 1987. It was at the CG against Bournemouth (although I think these days I'm supposed to spell it 'Bormuff'). It  was in the Freight Rover Trophy and after 90 minutes the score was 0-0. We actually went 0-2 down in extra time before amazingly pulling it back to 2-2 to force a penalty shoot out. Even more amazingly, we won. I'll bet Reg remembers that one 8)

it was a weird sort of day from start to finish... that mental rain compounded the misery in the end.

the thing that dumfounded me the most was the next day moping around like the world was going to end in a pit of depression, no one really knew about the game, nor did they care, not like when england go out.

I cried that day! 8)

i did aswell.

Have we had a better 'headerer' of the ball since Wayne Allison?

But then again, we did pay 500k!

You usually get what you pay for. Unless your name is Gary Alexander.

Sam Parkin wasnt too bad in the air.

I remember him scoring a fair amount of headers
