Title: Top 5 apps (iPad/iPhone/iPod/iPfreely)
Post by: Mark Hanrahan on Wednesday, August 3, 2011, 16:05:22
Anything good out there beyond the obvious? Recently bought an iPad and want to get a bit more out of it apps-wise. Currently the following get most of my attention:

1) Sky Player / Sky Go
2) Tune in Radio
3) eBay
4) Flipboard
5) MLS Matchday (bit of a soft spot for the Red Bulls)

4) Flipboard

Just installed this. If Carlsberg made apps this is what they would be like.

For those that haven't tried it, it takes feeds from a variety of internet sources (social networks, news sites, photo libraries etc) and presents them in a magazine format. Works best on the iPad but there is an iPhone version as well now.

Sounds similar to Taptu.

It is - they both stream content. But it's presented so much better in Flipboard - there are loads of apps that stream content but I've never seen one turn it in to a magazine like that before. If you've got an iPad you have to install it.

Super stickman golf: (iPad) , best 69p I've ever spent.

Sky go: (especially if you don't have sky, but have a mate who has & is willing to give you their log in details)

The times: not the cheapest, but probably the best neutral journalism about

IMBd: movie reviews & info on actors etc

Betfair:

I know, I know... :D

I was asked some time back, but the backend of this forum is all over the shop. My manual upgrades mean certain parts think it's version 1.0.19, others think it's 1.1.9 and others 1.1.10. Tapatalk requires 1.1.11 and the arcade requires 1.1.10.

It's quite unapproachable. I might just scrap the lot and do a clean install of SMF 1.1.15 or SMF 2.0 (I'd secretly love to move to XenForo) which will solve all the problems! :D

Hmmm, that... I spent hours last weekend on it to know avail. It will be done, but it's truly, truly awful! :)

Oh really, seemed to imply only 1.1.11, in that case I'll backup later and have a go on a clone of this forum.

I think they say it's only supported from v 1.1.11 but in reality it does work. You have to change the premissions of the files in the mobiquo folder to chmod 755, and also the folder itself.

I prefer using my mobile browser to view forums I must admit.

It'd be a nice Xmas present for the TEF, but I'm not sure everyone would be happy to receive such a gift.

I've found out how I'm going to solve the problems and install Tapatalk now, so maybe Thursday, when I'm fucking minging after a day session, will be a good time.

It's called iMame - get it quick before Apple pull it.

I can sort a rom set out on DVD for anyone that needs it.

The problem is that it is too new, Sky won't be releasing the app to any device running the Jelly Bean version of Android for at least a month i.e. blame Sky.

Quite why they won't allow the previous version to be downloaded to JB devices is a mystery.

If you want to play old arcade games (ie Mame) on your iOS device download Gridlee. Do it quick as come Monday morning when Apple realise it's a full version of Mame which can be used by copying roms over they'll remove it.

You'll need to jailbreak it first to run the SNES emulator. Then you need the SNES rom set, I normally go for the No Intro sets which you'll find on the main torrent sites.

For anyone wanting to lose weight this is a great free (with non-intrusive ads) app:

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/iphone
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/android

The best thing is you can scan pre-packaged crap (if you have a data connection) and log the calories that way. Has a large database of  foods.

Look at me, I've gone all Daren Ward.

(17 st 6 -> 15 st 12  - I'm still a fat Bar Steward, but the change in diet is working)...

Good on you Batch. I have used it before and agree its really useful. I've lost loads of weight this year, just by cutting down on pints and upping my excercise a bit.

I have also been using this app - 14st 7 down to 13st 2. The longer you use it the easier it gets, as you build up info about things you cook at home regularly.

Well done Batch. I am using MFP too - it is quite staggering how many calories are in food. I drink lots of squash and that really adds up.

I've recently downloaded a time lapse camera app and it gives surprisingly good results.

There are a few apps that allow you to edit Office documents, if that's what you mean. Though the rumour is that Office itself will be making an appearance on iOS in the very near future. Another option for Office documents is Skydrive, the online editors are basic but they work ok especially on the iPad.
