Hello all you boffin types advice needed.

Now Ive got my laptop that I use for work.  My darling family use it when Im home which has resulted in drinks being spilt in my last one and the screen going on this one (fixed now - only £160!).  So I think I need a desktop so they never ever have to touch my computer ever again.

I have a screen and a keyboard, just need the bit in the middle.  It will be for internet use and very limited word processing and spreadsheet stuff.  Cheap as possible really.

So anyone got any advice on good deals, spec that I need, where to buy, anything like that.

Thanks in advance.

If you want as cheap as possible, I have a Packard Bell you can have. 733mhz Celeron, 512mb ram, can't remember HD but think it's 40gb, built in graphics and sound, pirated XP, last time I checked it ran surprisingly fast and is decent enough. Think I also stuck Office 2000 Pro on there as well. No wireless, but obviously a dongle or card is cheap enough. It's been in a cupboard somewhere for a couple of years.

I'll first have to double check I still have it. But no, I don't want anything for it, it's worthless. Won't be able to check until early next week though as it was in the old dear's loft and she's away. Send me a pm to remind me on Monday and I'll check.

Get Barry to upgrade the ram to at least 1gb, that's the least he could do for you being kind enough to take it off his hands

Cheesy PC133 I think it is. I actually upgraded it to that. I got a job lot of them years and years ago, I popped 512mb sticks in all of them and flogged each off for 400 notes (with Windows ME and MS Works - everyone's a winner!).

PC133, I see the problem Barry. Think I have a few sticks here but nothing more than 256 I wouldn't have thought

Exactly. I think at the time 512 sticks were the largest on the market and were about £50 a pop. Around that time 512 was quite a significant chunk of memory as most pcs were 128 or 256. I bought a brand new lapper at the same time and it was properly top of the rage. 1000ghz P3, 128mb of ram, 20GB HD! Cheesy

Not any more, but I still have a fair bit of PC junk in my PC glory hole as the missus calls it, disk drives, processors, memory, mobos, graphics cards etc, I made one up for Herthab 2 weeks ago with some of the old bits I had spare, an Athlon 4.2 1gb memory and a 120gb hard drive with a 9200SE graphics, cleared some of me old bits out!

I am pretty sure I got 2 sticks of PC2700 512mb somewhere or other, I certainly have at least 1 and about 5 sticks of PC3200 512mb or 1gb sticks too.
