That was great - made me chuckle out loud. How annoying is it, for those of us reliving our childhood through our kids (well, me), that yet again, we're getting snow midweek when we can't get out and have fun in it? So we can't take the kids sledging, but it'll be a pain in the arse getting to work. That's just rubbish, that Gordon Brown's got a lot to answer for. I've just seen a snowplough go bye my house, didn't know we had them in Berkshire, thought they only used them at the airports down south.

Well they said the snow in the South East was the worst for 18 years...if so, then it was the time a mate and I played football in the snow.  It had snowed a lot, then froze, then snowed a lot more.  The football was great, you could slide tackle from anywhere and it didn't matter if you fell, got tripped or anything...the snow would protect you.  My mum's got snow up to her knees (good job the knee replacement went well), the photos from her look ace.

My school was closed today, it snowing now, and myself and the wife are off for a walk to the park.

Had a challenging day today..left Swindon at 6.30 with 8 tonnes of Dulux paint to be delivered at Woking,Guildford,Fleet,Alton, and Basingstoke...leaving Swindon it was cold but an hour later the sun was up and it was a gorgeous day,but it couldnt last..Hampshire had it alot worse than us andbefore long the back end(of the lorry) was sliding..had that happen before but with paint being carried i had visions of me Glossing the road..got to my first drop i was a nervous wreck..the gates at Travis Perkins were shut ut the fella there was adamant he needed the paint..ive seen all this before he says..bit of snow and it all goes tits up,he grabs 4 pots of undercoat and the next thing i see is his two legs juggling and a pot of lime green repaint my back lights..i try to reasure him things are cool but he does his second impression of Michael Flatley and goes down again..by this time i cant breathe because of laughter then i do a Todd Carty and slide along at pace with a box of Poly filla..we both find sanctuary at last and we have a laugh after a quick Nescafe i get his signature and make a dash for the lorry,as i get in i check the paperwork for his signature..MATT Greenaway!
I can honestly say it was one of the hardest days driving ive ever done...it was treacherous,i got home feeling like ive done 10 rounds of boxing.

Well they hadn't done Queens Drive by midnight last night, so unless they're gritting at 1am one would assume if they did it all, they'd have had to have done it early this morning, say 6-ish. By which time the snow was frozen, so the grit would be on top of the snow not the other way round. monday i had no probs at all leefer,the roads were gritted pretty well and there was hardly any traffic.last night with the fresh snow caused the problems.

Was very quiet yesterday as well..abit weird for a week day..more heavy snow through the night.

I drove down there this morning, it was ok by then, the fastest lane had some snow/ice on the right hand side of it but the a419 was worse.

The a420's been fine most days, monday evening it was better than normal with far less traffic. I heard that it was pretty bad this morning though.

Just had a severe weather warning at work from the local air base, heavy snow expected from 16.00hrs, time for an early finish again me thinks.

My mate used to work at Po Na Nas and one night i picked him up around 4am and there was shit loads of snow on all the roads and nobody about, so we thought we'd have some fun. We nicked a for-sale sign and drove up the RAF camp in Wroughton. The roads were all wide and completely covered in a fair few inches of snow.

We tied a rope on the back of my car and we drove around the roads at about 40 mph (getting a fair bit sideways at times) towing him on the for-sale sign! We then went into wroughton and drove the length of Perry's lane, up Wharf road and into the Ellendune, where i drove round for ages. We then came out of the Ellendune and drove back around past the Three tuns, again onto Perry's lane. I think we had about 3-4 hours of crazy jackass style fun. It was sooper and pretty surreal to be driving on public roads while towing your mate. :)

My investment in winter 'grabber' tyres during the summer for my forester is paying dividends today, got from Compton Bassett to Swindon in 20 minutes before the rush hour started with some nice power slides on the way in.... yeeeeehaaaah

Calne got a fair snow bashing......kids off and missus came home after being turned round at Derry Hill and Chippenham.......so i do not have a day of peace!!

 What happened to snow chains? When I were a lad and snow was much more common, people used to clear the street in front of their houses and drivers used to whack chains on their tyres.

 If you knew an elderly person in the street, then the old man would dispatch you with brush and shovel to clear their approaches.

Well its stopped snowing which is a bonus and the flight into Hong Kong is an hour ahead of schedule so hopefully Ill know what Im doing within the next few hours.

well no rural deliveries went out from the mail centre, but box and firm collections are going ahead, so i'm currently hiding in a van covered in snow til 2pm, when i will carry on with my job as normal. all you guys off work are fucking pansies, man up! ;) :D

Pretty bad slushy and slippery,canal walk was an absolute nightmare earlier,no path's walkways etc have been gritted.A few people have slipped up and got hurt,No buses running either and the car park's are treacherous,It's not to bad in the slushy area's but where the snow has got compacted under foot it's pretty dangerous in most places.

Have been in Cornwall for 3 days and can honestly say that the blizzard at Exeter was scary..been driving 20 years and havnt seen nothing like it..people were panicking and kids were walking alongside the road with there parents...was stuck in traffic on Howden Hill from 11pm yesterday till 4am this morning..also got to say the Devon police etc were brilliant,makingsure lorry drivers and people in there cars were warm and safe,it took about 6 attempts for the grit wagons to make the hill safe..it was still pretty alarming going down it...got to Taunton had a break then had to travel 60 miles north to Bristol at 20mph only as expected to find it too dangerous to be loaded,another slow track back to Swindon from Bristol ensued.
What i did find a bit weird is how quickly you can lose your bearings when you have no visability and everything is white...you get familar on trips with certain junctions,services etc..

My dad has loads of old pictures of the village in his pub i must take the time to look at them but always seem to end up working and listening to the oldies sat at the bar telling me random things.
I was born there but the council shipped us out of the house to a barnd new one in toothill back in 1981 after we got snowed in then flooded apparently! 
It's really weird serving some old chap at the bar only to find he knew you when you were a baby n stuff... being as my parents split up when i was a baby these village people seem to know more about then than i do!

I lived in Freshbrook for a time as a kid, and the legend I heard back then was that Toothill was a reference to the fact that train drivers used to toot the whistle as they rounded the hill there on their way in to Swindon station from the Bristol direction.

That bastard Richard Beeching has a lot to answer for.  Many of the lines he axed were commercially viable, and the Swindon area was particularly hard hit by his cut backs.  To have only one station in a town of Swindon's size is quite unusual (especially when you consider that Reading - not much bigger - has about 6 with plans for more).

Where we live now in Farnborough escaped relatively unscathed.  There are three separate lines within a mile of here, none of which interchange with each other.  The fact that there is still a fully functioning line from Ascot to Aldershot indicates that Old Town to Chiseldon and beyond might well have survived if mandarins like Beeching in the 1960s had not been so in the thrall of the motor car.

 Now to aficionados of the Ley Line theory of Alfred Watkins this has some significance, because he postulated that such places would have had significant mounds, which marked the ley line.

not saying you are wrong reg as i dont know for a fact,but as i grew up in toothill,ardiles explanation was the one i was told many years ago.it's deffo the reason the toot and whistle was given its name.kids from the local school came up with it for that reason.

I think Reg and I were both correct.  Toot Hill was named as such because of the whistle/toot/train thing.  Then, when the Western Expansion was planned in the 1970s, Toot Hill became Toothill - the first suburb of West Swindon.

Nice story to tell kids, but Toothill is so called because it is built on Toot Hill.

If Toothill was named after Toot Hill, why was Toot Hill called Toot Hill.

 Nah Ardiles, you're well wide of the mark here...it's a fair question that Batch raises, but Toot Hills are ancient in terms of place names, deriving as they do from the Celtic twt....pronounced like cwm....so toot in English.

 The Welsh had plenty of names for hills etc...and toot usually meant it had some sort of mound on top...which is why Watkins thought they were significant in ley theory.

 The Welsh word for the Norman motte is indeed twt.

trains did toot when passing toothill.dunno if they still do, but they did when i lived there.

Locos toot, because there's a sign telling them to do so (SW) this will be to sound a warning because of a footpath crossing, tunnel entrance etc, so it's a happy coincidence.

I agree with arriba! Toot Hill was clearly called that cos thats where the trains tooted. It all got so big so quickly, i remember them building the link center thinking it was amazing, then the cinema years later and when father christmas used to land his helicopter at carfore (sp?)

Reg i can place the train station now thank you... that little green patch has been the buzz of activity the past couple of days cos its kinda of sunken so every slides down it! I can sometimes hear the train horn in the ealry morning, but it's a seldom occassion is happens.

It's amazing how far the sound can travel.

in my even younger days late 70s to mid 80s i remember hearing a horn-siren when i lived in pinehurst.was this the railway works signalling the end of the day? this thread has jogged my memory but it's sketchy.

You're presumably referring to the legendary hooter...which was sounded to get men to work and to signify knock off time.

It's an amazing thought that to large numbers of present day Swindon inhabitants, the hooter has no meaning.

i though that must be it reg.was in infant-primary school at the time but remember it.

But the hooter was immortalised by XTC in one of their songs. I'm old enough to remember it.

Ive been to Toothill in Essex ...Reg is right,Toothill was here along time before Swindon even..and a lot lot longer than the railways...its just a romantic notion about the tooten!...incidently Mannington was once a medieval village,Walcott and Nythe are very ancient places also.

After living in Rodbourne half of my life i have to say that hooter is something that will be embedded in my memory forever.

Different Rodbourne, Leefer...that one is between Great Somerford and Corston.

Landscape history, place names etc is a particular interest of mine....being able to read a landscape is fascinating. Of course you can only get a very generalised picture without dedicating serious time to the subject...which I'm unable to do.

Getting back to the snow..... Is there any still around Swindon?  There's none here and I'm thinking of taking the kids to have a play in it tomorrow, would the downs around barbury castle be good for some sledging still?

Don't know how reachable Barbury is, but should still be OK. We took the kids to the Lawns this afternoon and had a great couple of hours sledging. It's cold enough that most of it isn't melting despite today's sun so I'd see what the weather's like in the morning - if it's still as cold (and it's likely to be), there'll probably still be plenty. Like Bushey says though, it's quite icey so probably better for sledging than snowballs.

Its just started lashing down with snow again

This is purely speculation on my part, but names with Bourne in them are usually associated with streams...especially chalk streams, which can disappear at certain times of year.  Hence Winterbournes...Ogbourne  etc

Although there is no chalk in that part of the world...there is the Hreod Burna which runs through the old Rodbourne Cheney (pronounced cheeney)...so maybe its named after that.

Since you like strange lace names Reg, have you ever hear of Blubberhouses, they Yorkshire village? If not, and without looking it up care t speculate on the origins of the name?

I had to look it up, it puzzled me because given it's inland location it puzzled me. The name was not given after what one may first think.

Read the link about halfway down...alot of different groups,good and bad have tried to find that secret passage(excuse the phrasism).

Lumps was on about it recently...in a thread which branched off into favourite place names.  I assume it's nothing to do with whales...Yorkshire was well in the Danelaw, so many of their place names have Norse origins...although I can't spot any of the obvious ones here.

A guess would be there are quite a few pubs called Blue Boar...any connection?

Reg that's a well reasoned guess and you may be right. From wikkipedia the name could have come from several places, but I heard the bubbling stream theory:
