I was heading up the M6 years ago with an ex-girlfriend.  On passing the big brown sign for 'Wigan Pier' I said something like 'Ah, the Road to Wigan Pier' without really giving it much thought, to which the ex then looked over with a puzzled look - like I'm some kind of ####ing moron - and said 'Er, yes.  It is.'  She had never read any Orwell.

I think we split up soon after.

Probably for the best.

A very good mate of mine is from Sint 'Elens...doesn't have a good word to say about the pie eaters.

Wigan was also fairly instrumental (see what I did there) in the growth of northern soul...which is much to its inhabitants  credit.

I couldn't decide which thread to put this in as the news story is horrible, but within this an element made me smile - would appear that Gareth from the office has been on a shooting spree... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-33190735

On the train yesterday between Lancaster and Preston (its a Glasgow-Euston Train), there was a young Scottish lass on the next table.

She firstly rang her mother to complain that the train was full of creepy people staring at her (wasn't me I had literally just got on), she suspected that they were staring because 'I'm pure born Scottish and they are all English and don't like it' however the real highlight was when she swiftly terminated the call because 'I've got to go, as now we are in England this will be costing me a fortune'.

This was all delivered at a volume that meant I suspect that 95% of the creepy English in the carriage could hear (and the likley cause of the terrible staring!) - sadly I had to change trains in Preston and thus was unable to see how things unfolded although I imagine she thought she would need a passport to get out of Euston!

Partick Thistle's new mascot, definitely one to get the kids flocking in (if you want to give them bedwetting nightmares):

1 litre bottles of the local brew here in Tenerife ( a beer called Dorada) is a bargain at 72 cents (53p).
