I agree. Such unorthodoxy cannot be tolerated for a game of this magnitude. Who knows what sort of effect it might have on the game.

(I'm actually being semi-serious... it needs to be changed)

They should cut it off because they don't have internet rights. They have on rare occasion forgotten before.

The Town End is going to be electric today for the first time in a while. Can't wait to give the scum keeper some serious stick hopefully in the second half when we are shooing towards the town end. Really hope we put that 1-0 in the cup to bed with a thumping win. COYR!

In my 40yrs of supporting town I have always found derbies somewhat over-hyped and underwhelming. All the individual abuse is a bit tedious and they usually finish 0-0.
As an antidote to all the bile flying around at lunchtime I am going to chug round the islands in the boat, do a bit of fishing and have a pint at Tresco fete  :pint:

ps make this thread a good one for when I read it (with some trepidation) tonight

I just hope we see a performance as apart from the second half against Crewe we haven't really hit top gear.
Would be great to see Connell and Kerrouche start, perhaps along with Ferry in the middle with Alan Mac.

Recently we have tended to bottle it in front of big home crowds, with the Leeds game in play off season as an exception. Hoping to see Clark, Connell and Kerrouch all feature today, and for Ferry to start the game.

A family about 4 doors away from me are Oxford, so bragging rights on the estate at stake here!

Clarke and Connell up front
McCormack and Ferry centre midfield.

I am certain that Clark will start today, there is no way that PdC would rush through the transfer to have him bench warm.

Smith

Caddis
Devera (or Risser)
Flint
Kennedy

Esijas
Risser (or McCormack if Risser plays CB)
Ferry
Ritchie

Clarke
Connell

has the makings of a good team IMO.

He did in an early interview. He said that he's spent a lot of time at CB, but he prefers the holding midfield role. I think it was also said in an early article about him being on trial.

More nervous for this than I was for the Millwall play-off.  A performance would be nice, but a win is the only thing that really matters.  Keep behind them, even if it starts to look dodgy.  Any criticism necessary can be saved for afterwards.  At the game it needs to be total support.

Come on Town.

Nice to see di Canio show some passion...  past managers have been criticised for not being passionate enough.

Since when did we become a side that leaked goals?!  Before today, we had only conceded two goals neither from open play.  And why do people think we are free-scoring?  Prior to Richie's header, we hadn't scored for two games either...

Apparently, we are shooting at the Town End which on a day like today might make the difference.  Footballers with names as exotic as some of ours can't be average.  You are not born a crap footballer and christened Raffaele de Vita.  It's just not the way the world works...

The point is it seems if di Canio can do no right.

  • If he plays Ferry he should have played Jonathan Smith as Ferry is lazy.  If he plays Smith he should be playing Ferry as we paid so much money for him.
  • If he's passionate he's an idiot, if he's quiet he's too passive
  • He doesn't sign enough strikers, now he's signed too many
  • The players train too much / they don't train enough
  • Paolo needs to give youth a chance - why's he got a 9 yr old keeper on the bench the fool?!

It's a fairly common condition which affects some Swindon managers.  Andy King was riddled with it.

Under Macari in 1985 we only won 2 of the first 8 games and drew once, losing 5 games yet still got the formula right and then we hardly lost a game and won the league at a canter with 102 points.

Give PdC time and he will get it right, we will get results we want.

We sounded like we played quite well just made a couple of bad mistakes at the back. Cut the mistakes out and we will win.

Even if most of you aren't......I will always keep the faith, after 40 years of following the Town I have seen it all, good and bad.

Not overly surprised as losing has become a bit of a habit recently. I have a feeling we could see some more defeats before it gets better as we STILL haven't got a settled side. PDC needs to decide what his first choice XI is and stick with it. He's becoming a bit of a tinkerman and I don't think its working.

Also, the lead up to the game was farcical. World Cup finals and Constable being a Swindon fan? What did their manager do? Say nothing, and he let his team do the talking on the pitch.

I do think we'll come good, but it might take a while sadly!

The thing is we have a new manager and a new set of players. Lots of them don't know the league, or each other - and new managers do have to spend time working out how to get set pieces properly defended.

We can bitch and moan a lot but the bottom line is we have Di Canio and a lot of these players for the next two years thanks to the contracts handed out. Both have to learn and learn pretty quickly but we're stuck with them.

Either they learn or they don't. Because I doubt we can afford to pay either off no matter how bad it gets.

Set piece defending is a major issue. That aside we battered them and if we carry on playing like that we'll start getting results very soon.

Ferry, Clarke, Connell & Gabilondo must start next game.

For the Oxsxum readers - I'm gutted. Move along.

But this was our best performance of the season. A lot too much hoofball mind. Just get McCormack in for Smith. Connell for Di Vita AND FUCKING STICK WITH IT.

Also forget another striker and get a proper defender in to play alongside Flint. Fooking schoolboy defending for both goals. Didn't see who lost his man for the first but what shite defending for the second (Devera GOAL SIDE, GOAL FUCKING SIDE).

Can't for the life of me see how P Smith was at fault for their winner (as per the texts on BBC Wilts). Maybe a Townender will enlighten.

Clarke looked lively but was blowing out his arse by the end.

Still, a smash and grab of this nature at the Kassam will put things right.

gutted. See you in a few days.

Pretty good game, played by two teams that wanted it. We played pretty well and have been undone by two set pieces. Big weakness for us this season I think. Duberry was absolutely immense - that hurt to say that. We'll be fine if we play like that all season. Just need to sort out defending from set pieces.

Typical Swindon. Typical away performance.

Think we were better both vocally and on the pitch. But an inability to defend set pieces (happened at Cheltenham as well) and not enough cutting edge up front has cost us that game. Think they must have only had three chances and they scored from fucking two of them. Probably the most hard to take defeat I have ever experienced.

Good points:-

-Ritchie looked back to his best today.
-Esajas and Gabilndo were both good on the left, gonna be a good battle for that jersey.
-Clarke was good, but needs to jump later and win more in the air for his height. Think he ran out of steam at the end.
-Flint again playing beyond his years/experience.
-Ferry played. Hoorah.

Bad points:-

-Devera was absolute dogshite.
-Di Canio getting sent off. I know he's a passionate man but his behaviour was stupid.
-Kennedy. I don't rate him as a defender. Good going forward though.
-Too much long ball for my liking.
-Cuntstable kissing that scummy cunt badge. Prick.

Fucked off now. HAVE to win at their place. And we have to fucking start winning again.

Totally agree with this.  The first goal was relatively similar to Cheltenham last week and the second was pathetic.  It was completely obvious from our line of view that there was a gaping hole, which is exactly where the free kick went.

Too many players on the pitch going for glory instead of playing the ball to somebody in a better position.  Oxford were shite, but fundamentally they did what they needed to do.  12 points dropped, all to goals which didn't come from open play.

Totally pissed off and quite honestly not sure what the answer is.  Players being dropped completely, new players coming in.  The squad is getting bigger and bigger, but isn't much use unless we find a settled team.  One more thing, De Vita in front of Connell again is bullshit.

I know b3nny, we did play well. But we've just lost to Oxford. Why are people acting like it doesn't matter?

I thought we were really good today, we absoutely battered them everywehere, they scored 2 set pieces and apart from the one on one (which Smithy saved brilliantly) that was it, the only weakness I could see was Devera, did not rate him at all, Gabilondo looked really good and Clarke put an absolute shift in though that sitter was horrible!

I thought we played well today, looked really good in the second half, just need to replace Phil smith , he wa dire.

Why does Aden Flint remind me of Hoddle?

Also nice to see the scummer in the north stand get a slap from the old boys , that made me smile along with the loon in the second half :D

Can't for the life of me see how P Smith was at fault for their winner (as per the texts on BBC Wilts). Maybe a Townender will enlighten.

he plays in goal.

we're used to our goal keepers saving everything.

just back, how you can say they wanted it is beyond me, oxford were shit sat back time wasted every oppotunity they were on the ground, apart from us not being able to defend 2 set pieces oxford did fuck all, devita is a waste of fucking space as is devera, clarke was superb, but having said that if we had austin or paynter up top we could of scored 10, all in all this is the lowest ive felt as a town fan for years

75% of the goals we've conceded this season have come after devera has lost his man at a set piece. The other was a penalty. Says it all. Why the fuck are we getting another striker when we so glaringly need another center back.

Nothing else to add really. Not convinced smith has what it takes to cut it at this level, looked out of his depth at times today.

Final point, di canio needs to reign himself in. The blusters all well good, but it's no substitute for actually winning a football match

We were the better team and look more like a team than I expected from hearing/reading comments on previous matches. Serious work needed on defending set pieces, absolutely awful.

J Smith doesn't look good enough, we needed a presence in midfield alongside Ferry and he was largely anonymous. De Vita looks too lightweight and out of his depth.

Gabilondo looks very good, would prefer to see him and Ritchie on their natural sides.

Going to book my ticket for Rotherham now.

Just got back.  Gutted with the result, but strangely encouraged by the overall performance (set pieces aside).  Thought Ritchie and Caddis did well on the right and Esajas and Gabilondo on the left, but switching them over now and again to prevent them from having to cut back onto their favoured foot might not be a bad shout.

This league is full of big, strong boys who are going to be a threat in the air, so the set piece defending needs to be sorted out a bit sharpish or it is going to prove very expensive.

The police appeared to have it pretty well sorted outside, but they seemed to have the YTS bizzies inside.  God knows what the bang was in that second half, but something big and explosive somehow managed to get into the ground which wasn't too clever and as for trying to take the Town fan out along in front of the Pox fans, that was legendary police thinking.

Revenge will be sweet in March.

I honestly don't think Di Canio being sent off made the slightest bit of difference - it's not as though his moment of ill discipline inspired the players to start assaulting the opposite (as much as I wished they would). 95% of the work should be done by the matchday and whether Di Canio is in the dugout or in the exec box shouldn't really be the difference between winning and losing matches.

I'll probably get shouted down for this, but I feel nowhere near as pissed off as I did after Cheltenham.
Last week we were poor and beaten by a poor team.
This week we dominated the game and showed that we have the potential to do good things in this league.
(Also I don't know any Oxford fans which makes it somewhat easier to live with)

I think that most of the previous posters on this thread since the match have summed up the highs and lows pretty well.
I couldn't believe some of the texts being read out on Radio Swindon and wondered if they had been watching the same game as me.
Clarke looked good but was knackered in last 20 mins or so - if Kerrouche had not been crocked he (Clarke) would prob have been substituted.
It's always tricky when a team plays 10 behind the ball and we did well to create some decent chances.
Ferry must retain his place in the team and I didn't think J Smith was too bad, though McCormack should come back in when fit.
Weak link definitely down our left side with Kennedy & Devera and Oxford noticed this by directing most of their attacks that way.

Just on todays showing:
De Vita lightweight get rid or use sparing as a sub. Smith didnt contribute enough in midfield - Ferry should be a definite starter with mccormack. Devera looked out of his depth - we need another decent centre half to play with flint.
Clarke looks like he will be good, should have scored the chance put on a plate for him in 2nd half.
After we stopped playing hoofball we looked decent playing passing football .... but we need to put convert more of the chances we had and stop conceding goals on set pieces. Give PDC time to gel the team, but we need to start winning soon to get the season started.

I've just seen the goal again on Sky and I can see why people have blamed Smith for their winner.  The ball should have been dealt with by the keeper, before it got to Constable.

Having said that he saved well in the closing minutes to deny the bloke his hat trick.

I'm absolutely gutted at losing at home to them, not something I ever want to experience again.  I waited behind after the match noticed PDC stood on the half way line watching the scum celebrating.

As I feared our players just weren't prepared to fight for the club, whereas their lot were.  Caddis and Ferry were the exceptions here, although Ferry was no way near motm.  Clarke faded towards the end but looks good.

De Vita should get no where near the first team, he offers absolutely nothing.  The dutch winger, positionally, was poor, the spaniard looked more of a complete player.

Oh and Phil Smith has lost what little respect he had from me. Both goals hit fault, should have got to both crosses. Embarassing day really. 38 years of history down the drain. Was gonna go to Shrewsbury but not now. I'm only going to City on Wednesday because I've already got my ticket. Pathetic.

Result a crushing disappointment, performance not that bad. Get Comazzi in for Devera, start Gabilondo and Connell and we have a decent side.

First game this season and for what its worth I left the ground feeling quite positive - although gutted and pissed off that we lost to the pox.

I thought we were by far the better team - just gave them 2 very soft goals. Positives included Clarke, Flint, Kennedy, Garibaldi and the work rate of the team. Another day we have won easily.

I thought De Vita was poor and this showed when Kerrouche came on - he looked lively and has obvious ability - pity he had to go off again.  Devera look a bit of a liability and his marking of Cunstable was very poor.  J Smith held onto the ball for too long and had a bit of a crab/sideways thing going on. Ferry showed some good touches but failed to create anything tangible. Easyjet didn't come wide enough and failed to go for the return on several occaisions. Richtie went missing for spells in the second half.

So overall a marked improvement on last season and I think once the team is settled that will make a big difference.

I thought Smith was decent enough - think it's harsh to blame him for either of the goals... especially the first for which he had no chance (Coca-Fola, I'm looking at you)

Defensively we were ok in general. As others have said, it was set-pieces which undid us and there was one man to blame...

Ritchie was much better tha previous games, Ferry gave us something different even if it weasn't his best performance, Smith put some tackles in but McCormack should come back in, Esajas was ok but Gabilondo looked very good when he came on, so deserves to start next week.

Clarke looks like a great signing, shame about the missed sitter but there's a lot of promise going forward. Oh, and of course I have to agree that Connell should start next week.

On the whole I'm not as disappointed as I expected I'd be. We played well for the first time this season, and based purely on today you'd have to say we could well pick up more points than Oxford this year. If they are seen as play-off contenders then there's definitely hope going forward.

I pretty much agree with everything you've written Cheltred tbh.  Like you said had Kerrouche not got injured Clarke would have gone off he did look knackered. With a bit more training he'll be a handful for us.

Definitely agree most of their attacks came down the left on Kennedy & Devera.  Devera did improve in the 2nd half but by then it was too late.  I think the 2nd goal was unlucky Smith went to clear it & it hit Constable and went in.

We need to be more clinical in front of goal too, we put in some decent crosses but we never had the players in the right place in fact i think some got in the way of each other truthfully.  Some of our set pieces we took were woeful.

I agree we need a Centreback & Leftback but another big Centre Forward like Magera won't go amiss in this league.

Gabrilondo looked good when he came on and was quite a handful, reminded me a bit of Grazioli

The most worrying thing for me is the injury list, Comazzi, McCormack, Ciobocchi & now Kerrouche.

The way I saw it was that somebody else (Smith?) was offside and Clarke ran through from a very much onside position.

should have known things weren't going to go our way, couldn't find my bank card this morning, still can't. was going to borrow my sister's car as consumption on a diesel fiesta is much better than my 1986 camper van.  car has a slow puncture so went to pump it up and the pump didn't work.  found another electric pump, didn't work, found a foot pump, tubing punctured.  argh!  finally got one of the electric pumps working so could use the car.

on my way down took the back roads round bicester and what do i see?  a fucking muppet on a bike wearing a fucking franchise shirt!  what the fuck is that about?!??!

I'm not going to read through the thread, because if it's anything like the texts on the radio, many likely watched a different game and I'll just get fucking angry at people's negativity.

This is the first time in recent memory where I haven't been pissed off after losing. The play was mainly good and few players had anything other than decent performances. Things that I was pleased by were Gabilondo, who looks like a trickier, taller and right footed Richie. Kerrouche, who looked class until the injury, Clarke who, although blowing out his arse at the end (anyone else notice how he could barely jump, he was so knackered?), looks decent and strong.

I thought Ferry was good, obviously, as we all know he can do no wrong, but felt motm was Caddis. Even if I really try I fail to find a player to find any major faults with. I'm not that unhappy and feel pleased that we clearly have a team that is getting better and has shown enough quality to move in the right direction. It just needs a spark and everything will just click. All the ingredients are there, they just require the right mix.

Not easy to look past the fact that we lost at home those cunts, I know..

But if you can then there were some real positives.

Leon Clarke looks like a brilliant signing. He will terrorise defences this seasson, needs to settle in the side and get his fitness up but that won't take too long.
Simon Ferry - Back to his old self from 2 seasons ago. It'll be hard to drop  him, hardly gave the ball away in the whole game and tracked well when Oxford had the ball.
Gismondo - or whatever the spanish lad is called. Looks class down that wing and as per Clarke needs to get used to L2 and his new team mates.
Aden Flint - Another colossus performance but can't do everything on his own. Devera needs to be replaced by Comazzi.
Caddis gets an honourable mention for putting in a big performance both in terms of quality and work rate.
Callum Kennedy - Despite the tired error right at the end I thought he looked half decent, bit of an under rated player in my book.

Over all the second half we dominated and perhaps the more level headed Oxford fans will admit that they were lucky to get away with all 3 points.

I am not usually positive, if anything I can be a negative cunt, but left the ground today honestly feeling we were the better side and I still think we'll make the playoffs this season, minimum.

I think it's because the players didn't do a "2010/2011" and roll over and take one up the arse before fucking off down the pub.

I do recall the last time, it was at home against Reading. They won 1-0, we battered them, and it slashed down so they were soaked in the Stratton Bank. I think it was early in King's reign.

Performance wise, I thought we played terrific, just lacked cutting edge in the final third, and as has obviously been mentioned, our poor set piece defending.

But to lose to them is absolutely painful and feels just as bad as I felt at Wembley. Nothing worse, but the performance shows there are a lot of positives to take and with this Czech striker, hopefully more goals wil be scored, just need to sort out our conceeding problems.

In Paolo we trust

Would probably be easier to see the positives if it wasnt the fucking scum.

With me I think it's that fact that I have had concerns over the whole new set up at the club (manager/players etc) and despite losing the positives were all there to be seen and although looking a little disjointed we were the better team.

Completely agree i always said we'd start off slow and progress as the team gelled. I know the team changes haven't all been PDC's doing because injury has forced it but he does need to make his mind up on a regular starting 11 soon so they can work together.   We will be up there come the end of the season.

Devera and De vita are shite.

Peformance was good, if we dont give away corners or free kicks we'll be alright. The ref was a twat, that time when their player was led on the ball shouldve been a free kick or a drop ball minimum. Fair play to Matt Ritchie for kicking him.

That bloke that run in front of their fans was funny, as was the polices decision to walk him in front of the yellow bellies. Fucking idiots.

Sounds a bit like the Sheffield Wednesday 03/04 opening game.

That pretty much sums up how I feel after today. We're not a million miles away from a pretty decent side. As long as di Canio decides on his best 11 and sticks to it I think we'll be fine.

My notes...

Gabilondo was good, better than Esajas
Clarke has a good first touch, but his finishing let him down
De Vita isn't very good
WE DON'T NEED ANY MORE STRIKERS, WE NEED A DEVERA REPLACEMENT - he's cost us too many goals in such a short space of time (him and Risser have been massive disappointments)
We seriously need to learn how to defend from set-pieces... every single one felt like we were likely to concede
Di Canio needs to settle down a bit, getting sent to the stands is stupid regardless of how bad the offside call was
J. Smith isn't quite up to speed or positionally aware
The bloke who tried to hurdle the fence into the Bank was hilarious. As was the retarded cops decision to walk him out past all the Oxford fans, right clever that was!

Massively disappointed, but not surprised. Genuinely worried about how this season will pan out after these first 4 games. Some poor signings, weird selections and an apparent lack of preparation judging by how bad we are at marking leaves me thinking the season might not be as fun or successful as first though.

Take some of your points there but maybe there's a tendancy to overlook the enormity of Di Canio's task.
Letting go what 13 players and bringing in another 13? On the back of one of the worst seasons in the club's history..? Was never going to happen over night and I think most of us said back in June that the Oxford game may have come too soon.

Desperately disappointed that we lost a much-hyped local derby, but not particularly disappointed at the manner of the defeat.  A few thoughts...

  • We dominated for long periods, and at no point did I ever feel we were out of the game.
  • Great performance from Ferry.  Dropping him (or, worse, selling him) is now unthinkable.  Gabilondo looked dangerous as well.  Nice competition between him and Esajas on the left wing.
  • Oxford were clinical when they needed to be, and weathered the storm when they needed to.  I thought we were the better team over all, but it was an intelligent performance from them.  Wilder had prepared them well to grind out the win.
  • PDC now looking a bit of an arse following his mid-week mind games with Constable.  Backfired spectacularly.
  • Following on from previous point, I hope that the experience of this week - and the WLLL sequence - gives the management team a reality check that they can learn from.  I'm not cutting my wrists over this...because it could be the slap around the chops that PDC needs.  Only 4 game in to the season, and we can build from here.
  • Improvement in the League now an absolute priority.  The last three results mean that I have not the slightest bit of interest in the Bristol City game on Tuesday.

Just got back, yes we were poor and i agree you deserved something from the game. Having said that i did not think you were outstanding by any stretch but you seemed to want the second ball more than we did although I never felt that you were gonna score. It was strange because you looked crap from set pieces but so did we. Outside of the football there were muppet supporters from both teams although i did have to chuckle at the old bill trying to walk your supporter across our section.

Yeah, you have a point... just thought and hoped we'd be a force in this league, especially with the size of the squad we have and pretty hefty wage budget (comparitively). We needed a good start really, and it hasn't happened.

Haven't read any of the thread so apologies if this has been said but today was a game we could and should have won. Very unlucky to get fuck all out of it. It is a fucking unmitigated disaster to lose to the SCUM for sure but the tiny crumb of comfort is that we looked way better than against Cheltenham and Daggers. PDC and Co are getting to terms with what is required regarding personnel and for the first time for months I feel we finally are tuning the corner. We may lose a game or two in the next couple of months but we will turn this around. Halfway house by Christmas and on a roll after. Also if any SCUM are reading this then remember when we do you at the Kassam fucking horse shoe shaped ground we will by the footballing Karma Gods do you good and proper. Make the most of your fleeting time in the sun.....it won't last.

Fair assesment i'd say.  I thought Oxford did a good job of breaking our play down in the 2nd half fair player to Wilder on that

I'm not sure I said you were poor, in fact your defence definitely deserves some credit. Your keeper and right back played well.

What the fuck was going through that bloke's head running at the "lads" at the front of the bank? What did he think he was going to do?
Had to laugh when two of Oxford's "lads", who'd been giving it the mouth and pointing outside for the whole game, bolted like startled rabbits when 1 overweight Swindon fan got 10 yards from them.. Of course the rest of them would've destroyed him, but it was still amusing.. pair of pussys.

Disagree with that last point Ardiles. A win is a win and that is what we need right now more than anything. It is also worth noting that in 85-86 - a season where as several people have pointed out, we got off to a very poor start and ending up pissing the league - it was actually a League Cup game away to Sunderland which kick started the whole season (we actually lost 3-2 but won the second leg 3-1 and it all snow balled from there). So from a confidence and morale point of view I think it is a very important game.

Funny you should say that as most Oxford fans I spoke with thought our right back was rubbish today, just shows you how you can have two differing opinions. Just got back. Excellent day and result, thought you were probably the better side but I suppose tthat makes the victory all the more sweeter. As someone said the mind games with Constable during the week from Di Canio obviously backfired as Beano looked up for the challenge and scored 2, after the game he said he's staying for as long as we want him so all is good.
Can't wait for the return fixture in march now.

To be fair, I can imagine that he'll be given legal advice that the police walking him in front of the Oxford fans to get pelted with coins and more when there was a perfectly usable alternative direction might get him a few quid with claims direct.

Gutted to lose but the performance wasnt that bad. Devera and De Vita arent good enough though sadly. I dont know why Connell doesnt start. Clarke andKerrouche also looked decent as did the spanish dude when he came on. Sort out the set piece defending, drop De Vita ane Devera, get Clarke and Connell match fit and we are good to go. Patience ia crucial here. Its gutting but 4 games in there is no point in over reacting. Their 2nd was very fortunste as well.

First look at us this season for me today and i aint impressed. The biggest problem is the midfield. Richie apart they were fucking terrible. add that clown at centre back and the keeper who was glued to his line. all piss poor.
Have slated Callum Kennedy in the past but he showed he is worth the start. Himand caddis are fine in the full back slots. liked Clarke's workrate but poor finish infront of the townend.
Enjoyed the pre match goings on outside, and the atmosphere in the first half.
The team needs vast improvement to have any chance of promotion imo.

Agree with IOB, I think Connell deserves a start, Kerroche looked good when he was on. De Vita hasn't done anything of note yet. Ferry and Caddis looked good today, as did Clarke in difficult circumstances. Don't think we deserved to lose, only changes i would make for Wednesday would be Comazzi if he is fit in for Devera and Connell in for De Vita.

The second goal was such poor defending by Devera, basic defending states you get GOAL SIDE of the player and yet he just let Constable go, very poor.
Thought the fans today were brilliant stuck behind the lads to the end and hoping for a change of luck against city on wednesday!

Obviously the only thing that mattered today was the result and that is big shitter but that was by far the best performance of the 3 i have seen this season.  I am a lot more optimistic about this season than i was before the game.  Yes we have a couple of glaring weaknesses but we are a league 2 team, it’s to be somewhat expected.

Clarke looks like he will be a beast in this league once full match fitness comes.  Ferry didn’t put a foot wrong, not spectacular we did what was asked of him.  Definite concerns about the defensive side of Kennedy, gets caught out of position way too often.

Pox came and did a job, a big physical side, there is something to be said about building a side like that for this league.

Paolo made a right tit of himself today, hope he learns from it.

Just got back - my first look this season and it wasn't awful, but it wasn't good.  De Vita looked anonymous.  The midfield were not strong enough when needed.  Devera didn't seem to understand defending.  Full backs were fine - a small plus I suppose.  Clarke looked like he might have a bit about him - I really hope he comes good.  No-one stood out as looking good though, which is ominous.

Also - losing to them hurts - a lot.  It hurt nine years ago at the Kassam, and it hurts twice as much now.  I'm going to the fridge for something to alter my state of mind.

I am going to defend Phil Smith - the wall set for their free kick had 3 players in it - leaving a huge hole that was just too inviting, sitting in Arkells you could see the goal coming from that free kick, goal keeper had no chance. Devera needs to sit out for a few games, he not up to the pace of the game. DiCanio got to sort out the defence otherwise we will get taken apart by better teams than Oxford. Ferry was ok but we need someone who can feed the strikers with better balls than he`s providing at the moment. Clarke was knackered well before the end. Gabrilonda looked skillful but I thought that of Easyjet at Cheltenham, today he was not really involved enough. Second half the atmosphere died including the Oxford lot. I would hope we would make more noise if winning at theirs.
Another striker on his way, never thought I would say that enough strikers thanks....no problem with all these foreigners, who cares if they are good enough, wish there was more knowledge on the bench of how to play in this league. Unfortunately pretty football not going to get us out of this league, if Oxford and Cheltenham are anything to go by.....

Are we too good to go down...?

Agreed - it also seems that he may be part of the "there are great players out there available for free who's lifelong dream is to play for Swindon in league 2" clan.  The truth is that good players tend to attract clubs in higher divisions.  Putting together a team to be successful in our division is a mixture of tactics, systems, hard work and luck.  Brilliant players rarely come in to it.

Hear hear Si.

My take on today has been echoed in the previous pages - by far the better team for long periods, Devera had a 'mare in terms of marking from set pieces and De Vita doesn't offer enough up top.

Connell again looked good when he came on, sure he'll get a start before the end of the season. Gabilondo and Clarke also showed promise, there is quality in the squad.

Ferry seems to give us much better link play as well, his passing is better than our other CMs imo.

Would like to see the team that finished today start at Shrewsbury, with Comazzi in for Devera and McCormack for Smith.

Yes, the guy was a few rows behind ne, and he deserved everything he got as he was bigging himself up. He got gobbed on plenty of times as he was taken away.

If Comazzi isn't fit I'd rather try Risser at CB. Anything but Devera!

Playing Risser out of position sounds like a GREAT idea! Especially as he's seemingly struggled in his position of choice so far.

From the DRS I saw he took a few punches even after the stewards got hold of him.

This is the first time in recent memory where I haven't been pissed off after losing.

I'm just pissed off we lost to the Pox...the performance was pretty good. We pretty much dominated for 90 mins, but lost on defending poorly on set pieces...again. You just don't let their main striker have a free header from a corner. WTF was supposed to be marking him. On the other side, out set pieces are shite. Considering we have a tall centre half who wins a lot in the air, when we get corners we should be putting the ball in the mix for Flint to win the header....easy.

Probably was but there was a number of people stood in front of me. There was no stewards around at first, so I wouldn't be surprised there were a few punches thrown. There was a few 'lads' in that part of the ground today, and they soon told the Pox fan where to go.

One bloke tried to leap and hit the gobby one.  Completely fucking missed.

As for the game I thought there were a fair few positives, and once that team gels we'll be very strong for this division.  I was disappointed with Esajas, P.Smith, De Vita and Devera.  Kennedy's got a good left foot on him but got done a couple of times in the first-half.  J.Smith went missing a bit, although when he was involved I thought he did okay.  Everyone else I thought had pretty good games.  We already know Caddis, Ritchie and Ferry can be a cut above in this division, and I think we'll probably be able to add Clarke(despite the miss), and possibly Kerouche and the Spaniard to that, allbeit on only a small amount of evidence.

Just got back to Manchester after a laborious and deflated drive. Can't be arsed reading all the doom and gloom on here but key point from me having not seen us before this game:

Ferry as MOM was a joke, as much as I rate him as a creative force his passing today was piss poor.
Connell was fucking shite when he came on
For someone with a lot of doubters I though Kennedy was solid
Ritchie worked hard today but his crossing was inconsistent. If we had someone attacking the far post then it may have been different
Smith's parry for the winner was a fucking disgrace, awful, awful goalkeeping
The spaniard looks like he could be a superstar at this level
Devera looked terrible in the 1st ten but grew as the game went on
Clarke will be a good signing but wasn't quite sharp enough today

Felt robbed not to have got anything from the game as we were by far the better team but I turned to my bro with 20 mins to go and said this just ain't gonna happen and so it was proved.

One of those day boys, one of those days

We should have enough to get out of this league

anyone else see the pre match stuff when the pox were escorted to the ground by the magic roundabout into shrivvy road? I enjoyed that.

Old bill nearly lost it at one point and it could have got very messy. A few broke broke through and there were plenty of Swindon just standing their ground and i found myself in with them. The old bill went in hard and redeemed themselves(some fella's on both sides took a fair old whack) My lad had never seen anything like that before so it showed him how much the two clubs hate each other.
Don't care what anyone says, i was buzzing off that and my lad was too.
We even had shirter fans fucking coming forward chomping for a scrap. I aint seen it like that before in such numbers.

If it wasn't against those piss stained inbreds then I think most Town fans would have been dissapointed but pragmatic. It was a classic grab and raid away performance. The Scummers were shit and created fuck all but as with last season we committed defensive suicide. I'm hoping Devera is just having a shit spell because he is absolute liability. I would like to see a goalkeeper command his area though but I guess that the differecne between Championship and Div 4.
The Scummers no 26 was absolute dogshit. The referee fucked up twice with the Clarke offside. It was a blatant foul on the Scummer on the edge of our box and it was never offiside on Clarke. We had players in offside positions but they were running back.
On the positive side that was an absolutely cracking cross from Kennedy for the goal. Unlike others I thuoght he did OK today. Gabilondo looked class when he came on with a different type of delivery. Clarke looked bloody good as did Kerrouche in his 20 minute cameo.
We're only 4 games in - another 42 to go. As Devera is currently ( and possibly permanently ) dogshit and with Comazzi injured then why not go with Evans alongside Flint at Slave Trade Central on Weds.
All good runs come to an end and I'll be happy for the fuckers to win every 38 years at our place. Hopefully we can return the favour in March at the Scumnest

So far he's not just dogshit at set pieces. Without Flint he'd look a lot worse.
As for the Scummers being escorted that was good fun - back to the 70s. My daughter hadn't seen anything like that. There were some very pissed up and worked up Town fans there.

Just back, saw a lot of folk i havn't seen for years, pity we always seem to lose matches when we drag a few stay away fans through the doors...was some real big mothers craving aggro in the CGH.

As for the match i always seem to be knocking the keeper Smith but that was poor play for there second.
As for the first goal i thought it was a quality header by Constable, contrary to others views i thought Smith in midfield looks to be a good player, good on the ball and with confidence should get better, was it just me but i thought Kerouche looked really busy and really suprised me to be honest...looks promising.
Played some very naive stuff which cost us but i think it is only a matter of time before we start getting results......a few lost battles wont lose us the war.
Di Canio is new but he is going a long way...he has got the club and town buzzing again and i for one will wait untill Xmas before i make a judgement.

Not the best of performances today. Positive signs that PDC is assembling a decent squad are all there though.

Devera is getting undeserved stick IMO. Yeah, he was caught fast asleep for the first goal. A crass error which he'll learn from. I don't think he did much else wrong tho. Smith was completely at fault for the second and we looked solid at the back in open play. Remember that Devera has come from a small club. We are a massive step up for him. Give the fucker a chance to adapt FFS.

I hate the fucking generic term 'gel' in football terminology, but I saw enough today to convince me that PDC and Wray have got it about right with our squad this season. Today was very hard to swallow losing at home to the scum. We have made massive changes during the summer though; a new Chairman, a new Manager and a whole new playing squad of individuals assembled from all over the planet.

I honestly think that we'll piss this shit hole department of the EFL when we finally get going. It might take a while longer to 'gel' but we'll be fucking spectacular when we do.

I agree with all of that. Think Di Canio will learn to 'cool down' a bit too. Passion one thing but being sent off not going to help players on the pitch. Is he likely to receive a 3 match touchline ban does anyone know?

Under Macari in 1985 we only won 2 of the first 8 games and drew once, losing 5 games yet still got the formula right and then we hardly lost a game and won the league at a canter with 102 points.

Give PdC time and he will get it right, we will get results we want.

We sounded like we played quite well just made a couple of bad mistakes at the back. Cut the mistakes out and we will win.

Even if most of you aren't......I will always keep the faith, after 40 years of following the Town I have seen it all, good and bad.

I could not agree more.

Yesterday I saw beyond the result and feel that we are almost there. I saw this in the first half against Reading. The difference is that playing a team like Reading is they give you space as will Bristol City. Though it has to be recognised that many teams in Div two won't and don't play that way. However, I'm convinced that all will come good and we will be there come the end of April.

If you're wound up now then you'll be even more wound up by the baiting and goading that will follow. (I have not yet read all the posts on this forum). Just chill, it's a marathon not a sprint, we were the best side no doubt.

First 20 mins - fucking pap.
Until the second goal - excellent but got to make pressure like that count in future.
Entire second half - an advert for L2 football at it's dullest for both sides.

Didnt enjoy it today, first home league game for a couple of years and despite it being our biggest game of the season it did nothing to reignite the enthusiasm, was just a good day out with the biys and a few beers - the football was incidental. Disappointing.

The trick is to remember you're watching a pretty shite level of football.

That way you expect the mistakes and are pleasantly surprised when anything remotely skillful happens.

The trick is to remember you're watching a pretty shite level of football.

That way you expect the mistakes and are pleasantly surprised when anything remotely skillful happens.

That's very similar to the advice I give birds before taking them home

A corner that was needlessly conceded.

I think you're right - Ritchie knocked it out unneccesarily when Kennedy was available.

You may also have noticed that the linesman flagged for the free kick for their 2nd.. The ref wasn't going to give it.
So it could have all been very different.

Did Anyone see Paul Buckel at the County Ground yesterday, i thought i saw him leaving the box office about 30 mins before kick-off.

Either this or there's a town fan with an uncanny likeness to PB.

If he was i wonder why he was there  :hmmm:  scouting possibly or just fancied a day out.

Took the opportunity of taking in 2 teams that he will be playing over the next few months whilst only being an hour away from where he lives I expect.  No real point in him watching Prem games on the box is there.

Rovers fans reckon they're in for Constable. Not sure if they were just winding up scummers though.

Why wasnt Flint on Constable in the box? Always seemed to be paired with Devera.

That's what comes of spending most of your time watching prem games on the telly!

It really wasn't that bad.

I totally agree with you.

I guess he was expecting Matt Ritchie (Messi) to feed Leon Clarke (Rooney) with the goals.

Probably because Duberry was seen as a bigger threat due to his size so he was put on him.

A more original take on the derby has recently appeared on our website, worth a go.
