Shocking news!

I met him a few months back in a restuarant in Sheffield, a lovely guy, with time for everyone.

He was achieving great things with the Wales squad.  I certainly hope now they go on and pay him the ultimate tribute by qualifying for the world cup in Brazil!

RIP Gary

Very sad news, and really hard to take in.

Can only assume that something in his private life has led to this, because his public life seemed to be going so well for him as Wales seem to be on the up.

Have great sympathy for his family & close friends as I'm sure they are also struggling to understand why.

RIP Speedo

It does have a few echoes for me as a guy who I knew from a venue in Liverpool (who strangely enough used to be a youth player with leeds) took his life earlier this year.  It seems he had marriage problems.  I experienced the same sort of shock today reading about Speed as I did with this chap.  You just never would have known.

Depression is a fucking terrible, hidden, disease that those experiencing do so internally, never letting anyone in to try to help them.

Just terrible.

Life must be very tough when you have the money of an ex-pro footballer...

Very odd, and as has been said didn't seem depressed yesterday.  I've always seen suicide (if it was indeed suicide) as somewhat selfish, but then that's perhaps illustrating my ignorance of depression.  Feel for his family more than anything...

Had a few Speedo jokes through on my mobile today, but can't say any are particularly original/funny...

Depression is a serious illness. Doesn't matter if you have money or not. Shame there are too many people like you that are ignorant of that fact. Educate yourself.

Post by: leefer on Sunday, November 27, 2011, 19:09:13
This was probably a rash moment of madness.....it is a bit of a myth that most suicides are by depressed people....its usually news or anger that causes a person to flip...or maybe drink or drugs so you are not sound of mind when you do the awfull deed.

Most depressed people get help before it gets to the awfull moment of self harm....of course not all sadly.

Starting to get a little pissed off with the 'he seemed fine on Football Focus yesterday' comments. Of course he did, he was a professional. What do you expect for him to turn up an unshaven mess, a man on the edge, holding back tears with every sentence? Then if he did this we could all post 'I thought he seemed a bit upset yesterday'.

I'd be interested in hearing more from Leefer on his 'bit of a myth' comment. I have no evidence to the contrary but if his post is backed up by fact that should be an interesting read. I'd have thought a lot of suicide victims have mental issues, as surely no right monded individual would ever think killing themselves is a good idea. I thought it was for people who genuinely think they have issues that they just can't see an end to or an alternative.

Such a sad way to end what seemed a brilliant life. Well played Gary, you had the respect of a nation I'd say, a footballer who didn't divide opinion, which makes a change thesedays.

Sad day.

What an absolute dreadful waste and my heart goes out to his family and friends who are left to pick up the pieces.

A friend of mine committed suicide by an overdose 7 years ago next month.  He had split up from his wife and she was being difficult about access to their two young children.  Nobody believes he intended to die, as had his mum and dad returned home at the time they'd said, he probably would have been found in time.  As it was, they went to visit a friend unexpectedly and got home 2 hours later to find him dead .  They've spent the last 7 years torturing themselves about that and feeling they let their only child down.  Truly awful.

My best mate did so many years ago. Effected me then badly.

Dropping me hints that he was going to do it and drove past my house twice. I ran out but missed him he was found dead in Morning.

Still not my place today to bring this up.

Very odd, and as has been said didn't seem depressed yesterday.

Depression isn't normally very visible so that's not a big surprise (if indeed he was suffering from it). On top of that you'll often find those suffering from it put on a 'brave face' and keep it to themselves, so you wouldn't know anything was wrong unless you knew the signs to look for.

I doubt the rumours about the children, did you see Speed junior at the Leeds match. He is the spitting image of Gary.
I've heard 4 or 5 different rumours all of which carry little evidence. Hopefully the reasons will stay within his family but that will mean unfounded stories will be cropping up for some time.

What a nice friday subject to discuss.

True, If your heart stops you are dead, no question, sometimes it can start up again. So it is technicaly possible to commit suicide more than once.
