Title: The Beer and Booze Thread
Post by: Freddies Ferret on Monday, February 27, 2012, 00:19:08
No idea if we have one already, but felt the need to start an alcohol related thread. Have had a couple of nice beers today....

First one is a Badger beer called Golden Glory- A very morish refreshing floral ale, would be lovely in the summer. Can taste a hint of peach.

Second one is a Castle Rock Beer called Harvest Pale- a lovely refreshing ale that I tried at the castle rock brewery but is now available at tesco.

Anyone on here have some good recommendations?

There was one a couple of years back...and my recommendations haven't changed.....Deuchars IPA (provided it is served at the right temperature) is the best, but I am very glad to be back in Wadworths' region as, for bitter, 6X still takes some beating.

What I would give for a nice pint of ale.

I've been limited to the local chemical beer for quite a long time now.  Recently we had a german Paulaner bar open, 5 quid a pint and after three beers I was pissed as a fart.

The local stuff here which is part owned by Scottish and Newcastle can be pruchased for about 25p for a 500ml bottle.  I once went to a restaurant that had a deal whereby you could buy it for the equivalent of 1p a bottle.   A huge hangover followed the next day for about 20p

Wadworths Horizon is my favourite right now, although it is more of a summer beer - pale golden, citrus but very bitter.

The Three Castles stuff coming out of Pewsey right now always seems good, and if you ever see any of the Otley beers  (O2, O3, O4 etc) they are a must try. Brains Dark is also close to perfection if you like dark beers.

Had a couple of Sambrook's Wandle on Friday which were well served from The Goat in Clapham.

My favourite to get off my face at the moment is Fullers Begal Lancer. Proper good ale that.

Was drinking Tribute Ale and Cornish Rattler cider in Cornwall last week, great stuff.
Went to a Cyder farm and bought a couple of bottles of Scrumpy, which didn't last long though.

Some good suggestions there.  For the record, I don't want SSWS to change any of his habits for fear of arsing up our season.  But the TEF is a treasure trove of info and the threads below have even more suggestions.

If you like dark beers and are prepared to drink slowly then Chimay Blue is a must - it's quite sweet and 9% bv which is why it lends itself to being drunk more like wine than beer.

That's mental! How much are the local spirits?

A 33cl bottle of the local bai jiu (60% rice wine) costs about 1.50 (quid).  I've had it a few times, got incredibly drunk and now even the smell makes me want to vomit.  Imported vodka and the like is probably the same price as the UK but most of its fake and does really bad things.

Have you ever tried Westvleteren beers from Belgium? Most complex beers I’ve ever tasted at 8, 10 and 12 degree strengths. Not easy to get hold of, best bet is to go to the monastery in Flanders and if they’re not open try the cafe across the road.

You can have a wonderful day in the Flanders area – beers from the monastery, a wander around Ypres with a fascinating museum all about WW1 (and a full range of Belgian beer delights in the town), drive out to a couple of the battle sites and finish off with a visit to the Menin Gate memorial and the daily parade at 8pm which really is moving. Ideal if you have kids studying WW1.

Actually I heard an interesting way to make flavoured and coloured vodka from a Swedish guy the other day.  Buy some skittles, take out the colour/flavour of your choice.  Put them in the almost full vodka bottle, close it and then put through a cycle in the dish washer.

Yeah, that's the one, popped in on our way back from Newquay to St Ives. Was really surprised at how big the shop was, it was busy too!

Should've bought more than I did really, oh well.

Agreed, cracking beer. In fact, there aren't many Fuller's beers i've tried that I don't like.
London Pride on tap is my choice if it's available, which not may places in Swindon do (I can only think of the Rolleston and Check Inn)

I'm not sure I could name my favourite beer, and thats the best thing about the resurgence in British ale, there is so much variety depending on where you are, the time of year etc. Theres nothing better than going into a nice country pub and choosing a new ale that you haven't seen before. Some are better than others, obviously, but its the variety and choice that really appeals to me.

Having said that, look out for Braydon ales, never had a bad one of those !

Duvel, its Duvel. Now available on draught evidently.

Still brewed and owned by the original family so get's my vote. Leffe is part of the InBev mass swill (Bud, Wifebeater etc) World Domination Brewing Co.

Nothing finer than to sit in a Belgian beer garden sipping a 'Devil' beer, watching the kids fall off the climbing frame.

It's not going to kill me and I can't be bothered to go back to the shop.

Off the booze after getting a blood pressure test - 180/125

I'm told that's not good

There was one a couple of years back...and my recommendations haven't changed.....Deuchars IPA (provided it is served at the right temperature) is the best, but I am very glad to be back in Wadworths' region as, for bitter, 6X still takes some beating.

Deuchars IPA, flaming yum,yum.

My mother-in-law got me a gift voucher for the new Micro-pub cum off licence in Devizes.

I had fum down in the vaults today picking some beer out, and plumped for:

Arbor Clementine Saison
Meantime Greenwich Porter
Budwieser Budvar Dark
Einstock Icelandic Toasted Porter
Fyne Ales Vital Spark
O'Haras Irish Red.

The only one I know there is Vital Spark.  Anything produced by Fyne Ales will be lovely, trust me.

Do they do Cornish Knocker? I'm looking for a regular supply?

Talking of Devizes, whatever happened to 6X? You used to be able to get it all over the country, but it seems to have disappeared from everywhere but Wiltshire now. Shame, I'd have filled the car with it on my way back last week.

By the Town Hall, right by the parking by the front window.

It is owned by the same people that have started the K&A micro-brewery in Seend. Spit and sawdust pub upstairs, with just a beer & cider licence. 4 or 5 ales + a few scrumpies. An ever growing selection of bottled beers downstairs in the old wine vaults.

Well worth a visit, but be warned, they close at 9pm.

It's interesting, Wadworths seems to have kept itself local unlike say, St. Austell breweries, who are slowly spreading around the country. I don't know whether it's because they want to remain primarily a brewer instead of having a portfolio of pubs.

St. Austell and Wadworths are of a similar age as well, which makes life more intruiging.

As long as they keep going and supply the Swindon area that's fine by me. Had a couple of pints of Old Timer the other day, first time for ages......YUM

It's still in the Sainsbury's in Sheffield, so I'm guessing that's probably national, I can't think why it would be up here otherwise.

Hmm, maybe there's hope. I couldn't find any in Sainsbury's or Tesco's Ashford last week.

Having a couple, I say couple but I mean three big bottles, of Birra Moretti. Nice lager. Didn't realise it was owned by Heineken.

Will be on the rum soon.

Unfortunately had to drink Arkells ale in the pub today, when will they produce a decent ale? Can't be that hard can it?

On a Tribute right now though... this is not the greatest drink in the wooooorld, this is just a tribute...

Although you don't hear too much praise for Arkells beer, one edition of the Good Beer Guide stated that Noël Ale was worth spending Christmas in Swindon for.
