Mid table Championship would actually be closer thinking about it..
When failed championship and L1 players look like World beaters you know your not that good..... Cases in point Adam Rooney and Miles Storey who were average at best in L1 but were hotshots in the SPL
I wouldn't describe Storey as an SPL "hotshot", think that's a little (a lot really) wide of the mark!

Adam Rooney wasn’t a failed league one striker by any means
And miles storey wasn’t an SPL hotshot
Yes he was....... Scored loads of goals in Scotland, very few in England until Salford in National league and L2 Storey did nothing in England and scored a fair few in Scitland

If wiki is to be believed 20 goals in 130 games.... hardly prolific.

No, why?
Because they, and the EPL, would probably love to have Celtic and Rangers instead of Burnley and co grace ‘the best league in the world’.

Colchester sack their manager and get the manager of Tiptree and Maldon in on loan as interim to the end of the season. Not at all tinpot https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56180934

Not guilty m'lud. I'm going out on a limb here, but aside from Burnley or West Brom fans of course, i'm sure the average football fan would rather watch Celtic v Man U or Rangers v Leeds for example in the Premier league each week, it surely adds more intrigue and interest? It won't happen of course and would increase the opportunity to have some European Super League.

Or the cheap recruitment of a locally based coach with loads of links to the club. The Colchester owner braced the fans of the realities of football during Covid last year so they should be ready for such decisions.

Makes complete sense. If you're safe and can't compete at the top, cut every cost. Furlough high earners, slash the coaching staff, cut corners on pre-match prep and travel. Just survive.

Yeah, fair enough, hadn't thought of it like that. TBF we might have been better doing something similar. I unreservedly withdraw my "tinpot" jibe and feel vaguely embarrassed by it
