Title: Yet another "find me a new laptop" thread
Post by: Samdy Gray on Sunday, April 22, 2012, 08:37:33
So my Acer has finally given up the ghost.

Want something to replace it, but not looking to spend more than £400. Seen a few i5 spec'd deals about for around £350, but also seen a lot of comments that first gen i3 and i5's aren't much kop?

what is i3/i5 :hmmm:

I have played around with several i3 and i5 laptops and they are really good, much much faster in the real world than Athlons and Core2Duos, even the first gen ones, they have much faster memory handling and some of them auto overclock too.

I would recommend you get a core i3/i5 if the budget stretches to one Sam.

The Acer had an Athlon and wasn't noticeably slow, so an i3 or i5 definitely sounds the way to go.

Sainsburys had a cracking deal on an i5 the other day (£299) but it sold out pretty quickly.

Oh and the i5 is vastly superior to the i3's, the i3's are quick but the i5 is very quick in applications.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Sunday, April 22, 2012, 09:43:53
An i5 compared to an Athlon is noticibly faster opening applications and office files and also quicker in flash applications due to the memory handling of the i5, an i5 for under £300 is a massive deal, very very cheap indeed.

I've been looking for a new laptop too.

I have found this one:
http://h40059.www4.hp.com/uk/homelaptops/product.php?id=A9A80EA&experience=direct

Plus you can get 15% cashback from here (http://www.topcashback.co.uk/hewlett_packard/), but it ends today.

Works out at just over £400.

I've got an Acer Aspire i3, 4GB, 500GB HDD - Got it at the time all this i3 & i5 was just coming out and i5 was out of my price range, never had a problem with it being slow and I never shut Football Manager... Scary to think how quick i5 would be ???

Well Intel have announced Ivy Bridge this morning, so hopefully the Sandy Bridge chips will come down in price a bit over the next week or so.

Anyone got/had a 17" laptop before? Are they a bit too big/cumbersome?

I've gone for a deal that was too good to refuse, but worried it's going to be a bit big and heavy.

Title: Re: Yet another "find me a new laptop" thread
Post by: LucienSanchez on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 11:41:39
I have had one before... as i don't rellay use it for travel purposes it was fine. I doubt if i had to lug it about on a train commute I'd have been a fan, but for lap or desk-based use at home it was fine.

Title: Re: Yet another "find me a new laptop" thread
Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, June 6, 2012, 11:55:03
Cheers. Mine'll mostly be used at home, so should be ok.

I found the 17" Fujitsu Siemens laptop I had very cumbersome to use even at home (although not on a desk) and was pathetic for travelling with.

Although I have the same issues with my 15" Dell laptop when trying to use it on trains or planes.

Keep an eye on the Sony outlet. Not much there at the mo, but they've just released a new E series Vaio and are listing the old models on their clearance site every now and again.

https://outlet.sony.co.uk/shop/VAIO-Clearance/E-Series-14-15-17/

They're brand new, not refurbished.

Personally I'd steer clear of anything branded as packard bell, they have a pretty poor reputation. ASUS, Samsung, Sony, Lenovo and Dell are where i'd be looking.

The Dell outlet is very good but the stock is constantly changing so you have to keep your eye out

Keep an eye out here: https://outlet.sony.co.uk/shop/VAIO-Clearance/E-Series-14-15-17

Just bitten the bullet and got this

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/lenovo-essential-g570-15-6-laptop-11884781-pdt.html

that is the exact unit i bought last october for £450 - had a problem with the motherboard soon after buying but lenovo were great and sorted it quickly.  been very pleased with it in general - use it for films/tv shows, browsing and FM - i don't do other games on pc.

great find for that price
