From the WDP

Quote
Tony Thorpe is on the verge of breaking into the Swindon Town starting XI - with fellow summer signing Jamie Cureton the player under pressure. Striker Thorpe has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with life as a substitute and sent a powerful message to manager Andy King with a midweek hat-trick for the reserves.

King has pledged to switch from a 4-5-1 formation back to 4-4-2 for tomorrow's visit of Southend, freeing up a second forward's place alongside Rory Fallon.

Cureton has been King's preferred partner for Fallon so far this season. The former Bristol Rovers man has impressed with his general play but is yet to score.

And yesterday King revealed that Thorpe was pushing hard for a place in his side.

"The competition is getting stronger," said King.

"Thorpe scored three for the reserves and that means the other attackers have to do their talking in goals.

"Christian Roberts has not trained until today and did not play in the reserves so he has fallen a bit behind.

If I change my mind for a striker on Saturday, Christian hasn't been there so Thorpe may get the jump.

"Thorpe scored three goals for the reserves and he could do no more. That puts him in the front of my mind because the main thing about strikers is form."

King has a number of tricky selection decisions before tomorrow's match.

A switch to 4-4-2 will mean only two from Gareth Whalley, Michael Pook and Stef Miglioranzi can play in central midfield, and Nicky Nicolau may return on the left.

That would dislodge Colin Heath, who would then challenge Ricky Shakes on the opposite flank.

Captain Sean O'Hanlon is also fit again, putting pressure on Jerel Ifil and Patrick Collins.

Why hasnt Roberts been there?

Has he been injured or was it a case of couldnt be arsed?

I would assume he was injured as he has not trained either, but who knows with this place!

i would expect roberts to at least be on the bench. if not king is a gimp. thorpe should be given a start ahead of cureton though. i hope nicolau plays wide left & pook stays in the middle, whalley should be dropped.

On the injury front, Christian Roberts returned to training yesterday after a knock, leaving Sean O’Hanlon as the only member of the squad definitely ruled out of tomorrow’s game

Good good, Thorpe deserves a chance alongside Fallon. Roberts on the bench only if he's fit.

At the end of the game, its a game of football on some grass with two goals, doesnt matter where they are

I'd rather see Robbo up front with Fallon but I've got no qualms about Thorpe starting. Here's hoping for a convincing win and performance.

he had better play shakes and nicolau, or i will get very mad and write a strongly worded letter!!!!

admittedly heath has been fairly tasty, but i reckon bring him on 2nd half. let shakes and nicolau rip down the wings for a bit!!!!
