Title: The late evening thread....
Post by: flammableBen on Sunday, August 19, 2007, 21:14:24
Well? I started drinking early ok.

One of the more full time chefs has handed in her resignation in at work. I'm not sure that I want her job, I'm working just enough hours to have a balance of getting pissed most of the time with a few hours of working. Also I don't think my dad really wants me to do it either because he wants me to get a proper job.

However I'm the most obvious choice, mainly because I can do everything and have done when people are away.

I think some communication is required but I don't think I can be bothered with another "you need to get a proper job" speech. Tricky eh? Part of me would really like the job but the other part is stuck in the easy lifestyle I've become used to. I know it can't last forever though.

Anybody else got anything interesting going on?

Send a cv with a covering letter through the post. That's got to be a winner.

I'm eating the last of my Ben & Jerry's. Might have to finish off the bottle of wine I opened t'other day after that.

Yes, I realised that after I typed it. I'll probably get on the scales tomorrow, find out I've put on 2 pounds and starve myself for the rest of the week.

All I want is a nice boy who will buy me flowers and chocolates from time to time. Oh and leave the toilet seat down and wash out the bath once he's done using it.

Ben be careful with fathers, my old chap is talking of retiring and wants me to run his comapny, the difference is what he wants to pay me and what the jobs worth is a difference of about 3k a month.

Fathers arent stupid.  Combat teh talk by saying you wnat to learn from him etc etc and he will give you a pay rise

Si is a girl. FACT

There is a bit of a difference. You're father owns some sort of ruthless business empire, and my dad owns a little tapas bar in old town.

I earn the same as the girl I'd be replacing if I got the job anyway so it wouldn't mean a pay rise, just more hours.

Dear Daddy,

I am writing to apply for the job of more full-time chef at your tapas bar. I've shown I can do the job by filling in when people have been away and if things get too much I can always do some stock-taking in the store cupboard (I'm especially good at taking the alcohol stock).

I know you are a little disappointed that I wasted pretty much four years at university and haven't really looked for a 'proper' job yet, but I think this job will be ideal and will at least keep me off the dole.

I enclose my CV for your perusal and look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours sincerely,

flammableBen.

P.S. I'll even get a haircut if I have to.

On the situation/intention of the immigrant.

Without wanting to sound like a Daily Mail reader, I don't think it would be feasible to allow absolutely anyone "in". However, immigration laws are hard to enforce ethically.

I think all the whites should fuck off home though.

Dr. F. Ben prescribes a litre of vodka. To be drank next time you don't have work the next day. Or even if you do have work. The prescription says "do it".

Immigrants are people who come here to work, and by working they pay taxes. How can you have a problem with that?

Especially with the natural population of the UK getting older, there aren't enough young natively born British people to carry the tax burden of the impending pension crisis. Or any services for people beyond a working age.

Would you prefer that we cut down on public services or benefits such as the NHS/Pensions etc. or allow more people to come in to fill holes in our economy and pay tax?

I be fishing for an argument a bit, but it would be nice to have a sensible discussion with someone.

as a property owner its a good thing, more demand for housing keeps prices on the increase. as soon as immigration laws or interest rates kick in then house prices will level off or even fall.

That would be a massive minority though, the majority of immigrant come here young to earn some money. Especially recently with the new countries let into the EU. And as their countries get economically stronger due to joining the EU, a big proportion will head back having paid more tax than they ever received in public services.

Is it not sometimes the case though, that immigrants from poorer countries sent a large percentage of their earnings back to their families outside the UK, subsequently harming the economy (fair play, I'd do the same). You can't base your entire argument on paying taxes, because in a free market economy this would cause rises in unemployment.

The sending money is pretty much irrelevant. It's such a little amount that it will have next to zero affect on the economy.

On the unemployment issue. Yes you'll be pissed off if some Polish dude can come along and do your job cheaper, but competition for work is a good thing, and you're forgetting all the more skilled people we thief. Especially in state run sectors. Teachers, Doctors, Nurses etc.

All forms of competition are a good thing, I don't think I said any different did I? I forgot mentioning all immigrants are bone heads who are only capable of doing manual labour too. The sending money is small amount at the moment, but with unlimited immigration it wouldn't be would it, if a large proportion of the population was doing it.

I haven't got a problem with any person paying taxes, whatever nationality/race/etc they may be. The problem would be the potential side-effects. In an ideal world people would be able to move freely where ever they wanted, but unfortunately it's not an ideal world, is it?

But if their right to be here doesn't come down to how much tax they put back in to the economy then what does it come down to?

All forms of competition are a good thing, I don't think I said any different did I? I forgot mentioning all immigrants are bone heads who are only capable of doing manual labour too. The sending money is small amount at the moment, but with unlimited immigration it wouldn't be would it, if a large proportion of the population was doing it.

I haven't got a problem with any person paying taxes, whatever nationality/race/etc they may be. The problem would be the potential side-effects. In an ideal world people would be able to move freely where ever they wanted, but unfortunately it's not an ideal world, is it?

Do you think these vague potential side effects out way the benefits from a fairly open immigrant policy from the new EU countries?

Yes, but most other European countries are barren wasteland, we've got enough room. And we need to make room if we don't

We've not really got enough room for an unlimited period of unlimited immigration. Not if you want any countryside left anyway.

How many hours behind proper time are you? 6? Is it only 8pm? I'd say get me some wine, but the logistics of instantly sending it are a nightmare.

*weigh

It depended on your definition of 'fairly open', and why is it suddenly only immigrants from EU countries? From an EU stand-point, I don't think it's justified 'changing the rules' for certain EU countries, free movement of people is one of the good things about the EU.

My general perception of American liquor stores would be driving to a dodgy part of town with a gun in your picket. Stereotypes rock.

I think I've put your points in the right order.

First point... we're not running out of space in anyway what so ever. In fact we're subsidising farmers to use most of it. I suppose it's good back up for when there's a sudden nuclear war or triffids attack.

Second point... Free movement of people is ace. I was using the new EU countries as an example because that's what I figured I was arguing against, it being the most recent influx. Immigration from any country is good though, doesn't matter if they aren't in the EU.

are you sure it's easy? Hmmm... I'm not sure my low hypnotising voice works when put into type. Not that I actually have a low hypnotising voice. But it would be nice. I speak more like a Squirrel on Steroids.
