No need to say anything really....we've had 4 pages of stuff about some game a month away v Barnet, and now a match day thread not started by SWS

Ffs, we're doomed now. I'll be finding some wifi bar in chiang mai to keep an eye on this and watch whatever prem game the locals will be glued too. I'm going for a 1-1 draw, which I'd be reasonably happy with

Massive day today.

Nam v Southend, Crawley v Burton etc

3 points will be magnificent but would take a draw if offered now. Having said that we are on such a roll and can see a 2-1 win (Jervis, Magera)

The PDC/JW combo  has got to be the greatest thing to happen to Swindon for over 15 years!

Would take a draw today, we never seem to win at Rovers 'Ground'. As long as the unbeaten streak continues, I'll be a happy boy.  :beers:

Anywhoo, superstitious bollocks aside...

2-0 to the good guys. Flint, Murray

Came up with this god awful chant whilst drunk in Ciren last night, goes to the tune of happy days theme tune.
Caddis Ritchie down the right, ferry smith in the centre, Flint and Macca at the back, that's the Swindon team, that's gonna run, riot all over you !! Paolo is ourssss, he's here to stay , he's ours to keep.
Absolutely awful chant

Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, December 10, 2011, 11:45:06
I think today could be a big sign as to where this team is at. Town teams of the past have often seemed to bring a ray of light and then let us all down within about 2 weeks. If we follow up the Southend win with a defeat today it'll be a case of "same old Swindon", and we'll continue to struggle to reach the top 3 for a while. However, a win today would show the discipline we all believe Paolo has driven into this squad, and would suggest we're tough enough to make a charge on the top 3 even with all the cup distractions.

Hate to say it, but I'm gonig for a 2-1 defeat.

What a daft thing to do?  Superstitious or not, why interfere with a good thing? This together with the fact I'm going, it's not a happy hunting ground and Ritchie's not playing means we will probably now lose! 2-1 Rovers.

Bogus Dave starting matchday threads is as wrong as us wearing white at Wembley.

Lets hope the result isn't the same, or castration should be his minimum sentence :)

FWIW, I think we will come home with a positive result, but fear it may be a draw.

Gabi taking Ritchies place maybe?
Devita on the left
Magera and Kerrouche leading the charge

I have confidence for today. 3 points in the bag ( i hope)

I'm expecting to see De Vita, Ferry, Smith and Gabi in the midfield, then hopefully Kerrouche and Magera up front, but no problems with Murray starting if that's what Paolo goes with

Only 1 win and 1 draw in 6 games at the Mem, and only 4 wins in the last 12 games against them thats a pretty poor run, and Rovers do seem to be a bit of a bogey team for us lately.

I must say, they have one of the strongest sides in the division on paper. This won't be easy, especially given our recent record vs them. This is a real test of our credentials and form.

However, they're up against the best side in the division. Still think we'll edge it

Not 100% sure yet, but they are advertising a decent TV package and Fios for $79.99 per month at the moment (about £50) so not too bad, it all depends on what I will be adding to my package I guess.  I think the Fios gives you 50MB, though as standard and you can ramp it up to something stupid like 120MB if you want.  50MB will do for me I think.

Swings and roundabouts really. If things stayed like they are we would be 6 points behind Southend in second. A Burton equalizer at Crawley would be very nice.

I cant take any positives from today. The second half sounded like we had some poor discipline.

Feels like a defeat

A draw at rovers is a decent result.

That could easily have happened last week at Colchester. It would have been totally undeserved had they equalized but it's always the danger when you are only 1-0 up.

As has been said though, you can't be too unhappy with a draw away from home, especially at bastard Rovers.

A point away from home and 14 games unbeaten and you can't take any positives from the game??

Jesus wept get a grip ::)

OK, maybe a bit harsh but I am pissed off. Gabilondo sounded like he should have buried a few. Poor discipline from our players and we let in a late goal (brings back memories of last year)

3 points would have put us up a notch to 5th and 2 points closer to the top 3

Fine, we didn't lose and we carry on our unbeaten run but I can't see it as a good result like some of you do.

What a disappoint to concede so near the end but to be honest we were under pressure for the last 15 mins or so.  The free kick from which the equaliser came was a good challenge, crap refereeing.  Too many weak links in the team today Gabilondo, Cibbochi, Magera.  Jervis did nothing when he came on, but strange decision to take off Kerrouche when Magera was the poorer of the two.

Don't understand why Di Canio upset the balance of the team so near the end by bringing Risser on either.  It was him getting in Ferry's way that led to the free kick they equalised from.  Gabilondo missed a sitter to make it 2-0 and we should have had a penalty as well - blatant handball off the line.  We missed Ritchie today and we also looked more knackered at the end than normal.

Tinpot shithole of a ground, it's fucking freezing and now our coach has been stopped because there's some disorder outside the ground.

But to say you can't take any positives from the game is a bit silly. The fact of the matter is you can't win every game. That's life. We'll concede a few more late equalizers/winners before the end of the season (not too many I hope of course) but we'll get some ourselves as well.

We looked toothless on both wings without ridehalgh or Ritchie, caddis had to do it all. Thought Jervis looked good but didn't get a lot of service once we started hoofing it for the last 30. Gabilondo was poor, magera could win the ball but didn't seem to work well with anyone else. Ferry and flint were good as usual, ref was random and appalling, gave us nothing in the second half.

A few weeks ago I recall that a few TEF'ers wanted to see a Swindon Town line-up without Matt Ritchie. I hope today has satisfied their curiosity.

Caddis is on 4 yellows so let's hope they don't ask the same question for him.

On the result…

We didn't deserve the win and today I didn't recognise my team. After two minutes I said to Fabrizio that if we were going to win the game then we'd have to be lucky. Quite a few of the players didn't show the desired commitment and hunger.

On the start…

We didn't start the game well. We didn't show the right things and today Bristol Rovers were better than us. At the end of the day we have taken the draw, but we were lucky to get that. If they don't win against Morecambe next weekend then they will not be having time off next Sunday. We are talking about a group - and they must be treated as a group not individuals.

On the point…

The point is the positive but other than that we cannot take anything from the game. If we keep going like this we will keep dropping points. I would prefer to lose the game and play much, much better than put on a display like we have done today.

Devita was by no means the worst.  Cibbochi deserves a tongue lashing for not being able to take a throw in correctly and Magera for not being able to win a ball in the air. Gabilondo  had his when he was subbed after his final miss.  Di Canio was going mental at him as he came off.  Felt a bit sorry for him to be honest, it was right in front of everyone.

I was thinking about this and was wondering if he was actually doing anything any different to normal. I see what I think are foul throws in every single game I watch (not just Swindon games) but the refs don't bother penalising them. I wonder if we came up against an official today who had actually bothered to read his rule book and realised that in fact quite a high percentage of throw ins are foul throws?

Just a thought :hmmm:

I do find his hot headedness worrying, but Di Canio isn't going to change his ways. Hopefully the players realise its his way or the highway and just knuckle down and get on with it rather than sulk.

Seems silly for the thread to be in this tone, we just got a point in a traditional graveyard and we are 14 unbeaten!

So sounds like you were there, do you think we deserved 1 point or all 3?

I agree with that. When the Board appointed Paolo they knew there would be days like this (they must have done). My view is that in Italy, this kind of reaction is not in the slightest bit unusual and that it's a clash of the hot-headed Latin and more prosaic northern European temperaments.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's pretty clear that a number of players dropped their standards today and are going to be left in no doubt about that. Hopefully things won't go too far because they certainly should not.

I reckon Jeremy Wray has a key role to play at this point in bringing Di Canio back to earth. Di Canio has to manage the team, JW has to manage Di Canio.

Ridiculous. We must have by far the biggest budget in the league, with the majority of the squad signed by him. Only got himself to blame if they aren't performing as he wants. We've got too many players as it is, certainly don't need anymore.

Well all we can do is wait to see how it all unfolds. All I can say though is that if Di Canio were to end up resigning - which I can't believe he will at this point - then he will never make it as a manager.

Guess what? When you are a football manager you get the odd set back and you have to be able to bounce back from it. And let's face it, as set backs go, that wasn't much of one really was it?

A draw was probably a fair result.  We were the better team in the first half, but lost our way in the second and were under pressure for large parts of it.  Saying that Gabilondo could have put the game to bed in the second half and we had a strong penalty shout.  Would have taken a point at the start, but can't help feeling a bit disappointed at conceding so late on.

I didn't hear the interview and have only read the Adver story. It's difficult to tell if the Adver are being sensationalist or whether Di Canio's comments have been taken out of context but if he meant the comment regarding discussing his contract then the board should tell him to make do with what he's got or fuck off elsewhere. Di Canio's been given free reign to overhaul the squad and cannot hold the club to ransom. It's not as if we're doing badly, is it?

Out of the first XI today only Flint, Caddis and Ferry were not signed by Di Canio and they are arguably our three best and most consistent performers.

To be honest I'm not sure who has been more stupid here: Di Canio for not holding his tongue or the Adver for running an utterly moronic sensationalist article.

But that rage could have been because they threw away two points, or because the ref wasn't too hot. Not necessarily because of PDC. It would be worrying if it were mind.

Only have ourselves to blame for the result. You can't keep giving stupid fouls away and expect not to be punished by one.

Shit game, we resorted to hoofball (which we're shit at). No real standout players, apart from caddis. Absolutely fantastic today, up and down the wing no end. Great goal to.

Have to say that, despite all the talk about our superior fitness, we lagged visibly towards the end. I'd hope that a lot of that is down to playing 3 games in the past 7 days though.

I know he wasn't on for long, but seeing him at close quarters today Risser looks in now built to be a professional footballer. Looks fat.

I'm not sure what was worse about the chibocci incident. The foul throws, or the fact we kept him on throw-ins.

Have no sympathy for di canio at all.

Still Unbeaten xx

We have supposidly been here before though with his apparant rant at half time against Shrewsbury. All seemed well not long after that. Probably just annoyed at the late goal like all the players would have been.

My guess is that this will blow over and in time this sort of thing is something we will get used to every now and again. Di Canio is a passionate man but he is also an intelligent man. He knows he is in 'a good moment' to use his terminology and it would be extremely stupid to walk away from his current situation.

Yeah. Rhys Evans was saying during the Southend game that Risser was a near-perfect physical specimen.

That's what it looked like to me. I'm sure he isn't (i've never seen him in the shower), but given his startling lack of mobility his bulk certainly doesn't help him

Being absolutely stacked would also restrict his mobility though. There aren't many top footballers who are absolutely massive.

Although I suppose that's not the debate.

One of the most disjointed and lacklustre performances since the end of August. When we got the ball down and played to feet we pissed all over them, unfortunately a lot of the time the ball was in orbit.

Magera hasn't come good yet, his control is dire. Gabilondo drifted in and out of the game, more in than out though. Kerrouche is most definitely not on fire and Easyjet did fuck all apart from lose the ball when he came on.

Glad to get a point though as they did put us under some pressure towards the end. Oh and the ref was fucking clueless.

Still on our unbeaten run and still have class in our team, but if we play more games like that we will get beaten.

Worrying.

His mad rants can't be having a good effect on the team. They are 14 unbeaten for fucks sake !

If anything I think they will have a good effect on the team. Firstly it will show that there are no places at STFC for passengers and that players have a standard they are expected to meet. In most of our real world jobs it would classed as Quality Checks or something.

If last seasons bunch of wasters had, had the same manager rants aimed at them some of them might have bucked their ideas up.

Di Canio is a perfectionist and he wants his players to be too. Drawing 1-1 with Rovers is not perfect.

I hope all the fuming and pissed off twits from the players are because they dropped two points today and they share Di Canios desire and enthusiasm to win every game.

Agreed on that, he's been backed to the hilt by the board and he has absolutely no right to complain about it.

Sounds like Paolo got a bit emotional!

Agree with this though.  Paolo has been backed to the hilt and more by the board.  You look at our team and see that the main 4 players in Ritchie, Ferry, Flint and Caddis where already here pre PDC.

Lets all assume that Timlin, Bodin, Clarke and a couple of other will go in January, in addition to all the loans that will expire.  This I am assuming will free up the wage budget for these new players PDC wants.

Then look at PDC's additions during his short reign .....

Hits - Foderingham, McCormack, Smith ....

Misses - Risser, Comazzi, Atiku, Lanzano, Montano,

And then all the ones inbetween ....

I just am not totally confident in PDC and his transfer market approach that does resemble a scatter gun ...... What if he gets his new players in Jan and we fail to go up?  Will we get a similar rant in May demanding more funds in the summer?

Ok, he isnt happy but considering this is a team that 14 unbeaten I dont really like him coming out and blowing a casket on live radio.  I know everyone is going to type in saying he is just being passionate, but I would like to see him being a little more professional.  Certain things should be kept behind closed doors.

....and I think the whole 5 players or I resign (not the exact quote obviously) was more in the context of I wont tolerate under performing players and I will kick them out the door and get new ones in rather than anything relating to Di Canio's position.

I could have read between the lines wrong though.

I thought that was a good game of football, a bit feisty and end to end stuff. For me it was a definite penalty and red card in the first few seconds. The ref gave us most things in the 1st half and fuck all in the 2nd.
Rovers should be higher up the league than they are. We didn't play that great today but we got a point. We've had 3 difficult away games in a row and won 2 and drew 1.
We was very good as usual. Caddis was MOM for me. Flint and McCormack had very good games. cibocchi wasn't at his best and I didn't see much wrong with his throws.
Smith and ferry did well - Ferry more so in the 2nd.
Gabilondo and DeVita were shite with Magera and Kerrouche being worse. If Gabilondo had a left foot he'd have scored 2. DiCanio went apeshit at him after the second miss and subbed him for Esajas who did fuck all apart from get a silly yellow and then gobbed it off at the ref. Jervis tried but he had no support.
Watching the game at Rovers is no better than watching a game at Supermarine.
The penatly incident joteddyred is referring to, I thought it hit Flint on the line.
All in all a decent day out that could have been better but Rovers deserved their draw. Thier support is total wank both in terms of numbers and support.

In all honesty no. I didn't expect to hear that he had started issuing ultimatums to the board, who have backed him to the hilt in my eyes. Particularly when we are on such a fantastic run.

But we don't actually know the context of his comments. Whether he was serious about what he said, or whether he was using it as a stick to beat his players, or whether he just said it without any thought whatsoever.

I'm still happy with a point, even if we were close to 3.

Whilst disapointing that we conceded so late on I do agree with the majority in that we would have taken a point at the start. My marks:

Wes 7.             Not his most assured today
Caddi 7.           Played well but not as effective as normal in that their FB played him well
Aden 7.           Poor start and new that he was in a game today. Improved well in 2nd half
Cibo 5.             Poor. Missed Ridalgh
Rafa 6.            Thought he actually played well in 1st half but like most faded in 2nd half
Topboi 7           Thought we didn't use him as much. Was class when on the ball
Smudger 6        Not as effective today
Gabi 4              Terrible.
Mehdi 5            See Rafa, only less time
Lukas 5            Disapointing. Thought he improved when JJ came on

Easy 4              Worse than Gabi and thats saying something
JJ 7                  Thought he did well
Risser 4             Did he touch it?

Thought that the pitch was awful and had deliberately not been watered. Rovers played to their strengths (hoof ball).

Not overly disapointed by Paolo's comments as will all be forgotten come Monday.

You could see how frustrated Di Canio was with our performance and the referee. I wouldn't read too much into his comments, he is very passionate and was extremely frustrated after the game.

The ref was shocking, they should have had a penalty in the first 20 seconds and he didn't get much right after that, he never let the game flow.

Very poor performance from us, we were lucky to get a draw, we gave away too many stupid free kicks in the second half. Caddis was brilliant as usual today, and a great goal. We definatley missed Ritchie more than I thought we would, we lacked width. De Vita comes inside too much and Gabi didn't have his best game for us.

Ferry had a good game, he hardly wasted a ball. I was impressed with Cibo's long throw that I never realised he had but it's not much use when he keeps taking them illegally.

Magera didn't offer a great deal and I was surprised when Kerrouche came off instead. Jervis looked decent when he came on but had no service. We played too much hoofball and it wasn't very effective.

We were lucky to get a point, but any point away from home is a good point and the unbeaten run continues.

Went to the Wellington and had a drink with some good natured Rovers fans. Then sat in the tent behind the goal with a post and drainpipe blocking my view!

You just know how things are going to go from the first 5 minutes with Town, and we were all over the place. Fuck knows how they didn't score in the first minute. Caddis is our best player by far and his goal was outstanding, but he really missed the link up play with Ritchie today (I guess you could argue that's why he scored that goal!). We were very poor up front and only improved slightly when Jervis came on. No idea how Cibocchi gets in the side, he's dog shit. Some half decent performances from the likes of Ferry, Gabi, Flint and McCormack I guess.

I didn't know anything about Di Canio's comments until I got home but I can understand why he was so upset. Rovers deserved a point, if not all 3.

I don't suppose there will be until Monday.

In a way, his outburst is quite refreshing. It's almost like something that some one would post on here after a game when we've dropped 2 or 3 points.

How often have you come away from a game wanting to bang your head against a wall in frustration, only to read the usual platitudes in the manager's post match comments....i.e 'this is never an easy place to come, we had key players out injured/suspended, we'd have taken a draw before the game'...and so on

That sort of attitude - and the fact that we've not had a pot to piss in, in living memory - is probably why we have been mired in mediocrity since I don't know when. Di Canio's response, whilst not being exactly what we're used to and perhaps appearing to be a bit OTT could be exactly what the club needs to take it to the next level.

I'm sure he will sort things out with JW over the weekend. It is in everyone's interests for that to happen.

I'm still bemused as to why Gabilondo didn't play on the right with Ritchie not playing?  It is clear he hasn't got a left foot but yet every game he is played on the left?  Today was the perfect opportunity to play him on his natural side but yet again he was stuck on the left having to cut inside every time he gets the ball and when he does this he runs into traffic and due to his size gets shoved off the ball.  It can't be too hard to play your right winger on the right can it?

Just reading some of Paolo's comments from after the game and he is unhappy about some attitudes and that some of his players aren't used to playing over Christmas and they would like a winter break as they are thinking about shopping and having a few days holiday.

above, fairly obvious why rdv played right ahead of lg.... defensive cover... we have to play a rm who defends well to protrect caddis' attacks

we offered nothing from out wide today

magera played a limited role, but everything he did was class

bringing risser on lm invited them on. should have been murray to stretch it

wf is a class keeper, as are af and am in the middle

first half - we were shit and scored. second half - they were better and we got their just rewards. if gabi had taken either chance...

excluding pdc's hissy fit (got to love a manager who has v high standards), it is another away point in the bag

Especially when De Vita plays on the left all the time anyway! Although Boeta makes a very good point.

We huffed and puffed yesterday and got a point we probably didn't deserve on the balance of play. I don't recall being that threatened by them though, even when they did create. Other than Harrold in the first minute.

I think we missed Ridehalgh more than Ritchie yesterday.

Point away from home is good though and if we win our home games then we will achieve our goal. No problem!

agree we really missed ridehalgh yday, but equally ritchie

need a left sided winger in jan, a centre midfielder (smith is good back-up/last 20 mins player) and a striker that wants to get in behind (murray?) to win the league

Magera was really disappointing. I really struggle to see how the man has international caps with a country like the Czech Republic. If you consider how the ball would stick to Paynter, or even Austin, when they had their backs to goal, it makes you realise what we're missing up front - we just don;t retain possession as well as we should in the final 3rd. Jervis did a much better job when he was on. I haven't seen enough of Benson to know if he's that type of player - isn't he more a front to goal, poacher kind? I think it's absolutely crucial we address it in January or see a serious turnaround in Magera's performances. Preferably the latter, because we can't go on throwing money at signings that don't come off.

Didn't get to watch the post match entertainment as used the SAS Travel but thanks to the old ladys fighting in the street our buses had to wait for half hour in the car park til we could move. The game was very poor and there ground is a shit hole and that Cibbochi shouldn't ever get the chance to take a throw in ever again !

Did anyone else see Kerrouche come off the bench to show him where to plant his feet?

Made I giggle.

Hi

As a supporter since 1962 (jeez is that 50 years coming up ?!)  I dont now get much opportunity to see the lads these days but caught the Rovers game, so this is my first sighting of PDC and his ways.

What I noticed was that the G man was doing especially well in spotting opportunities to get behind the Rovers defence,
most of which were missed/not taken up by the team. Thus the occasion when he got through to take the shot in the 2nd half was for me creditable, and I didnt feel that his failure to score was particularly reprehensible, nor did I feel he blew an opportunity to pass to someone better placed.

However, what I did then notice was PDC's reaction which was so massive that I knew he was going to take him off right away. (I also noticed that the miss early in the first half produced what seemed to me to be an excessive reaction from PDC).

Taking him off was for me a big mistake, as it was clear that he stood a good chance of getting behind the defence
again before the end of the game. This was particularly important because we needed an outlet from any pressure that would be put on us without forcing Caddis to have to go up the other wing too many times. (And given that Magera seemed to be a pretty hopeless donkey, the middle wasn't much of an option either).

Sure enough, his replacement, the E-man, showed none of that defence-opening nous, and sure enough our outlets dried up and we got caught out in the end.

I also noted that each time our goalie got the ball, the G-man hared up to create masses of space on the left which was wasted because the keeper didnt seem to have the nous to aim the ball at him.

So for me, while it's all well and good saying 'ah PDC he's Italian and emotional', that doesn't mean it's a good thing that he gets into a red mist and fails to see the 'obvious' ie. the above. To me, that ultimately doesn't bode well.

Would be interested in others' views on this. Apologies for the language used to write this - I coudnt find a way to do it differently.

Wray's reaction is a good attempt at defusing any potential situation (which has pretty much blown over already thanks to the Independent) but the comments do not refer to any specifics - no mention of the number of targets or budget/wages.

I did like this bit though:

"I would rather have that every time over a manager who gives bland comments and does not seem to care in any way."

I wonder who he's on about...

Lander's agent I reckon. Disagree. Both chances should have been taken , especially the first.

Looking at our next two fixtures, they look to be the real '6-pointers', both Morecombe and Torquay sit just outside the play-off places 3 points below us and if we can win both games then that will start to cement our place within the top and start clawing our way towards the top 3.

let's be honest, gabi did fuck all except miss two sitters. esajas did less. pdc right very critical of both wingers as they offered us absolutely nothing in terms of build-up play
