About 30p?

I dunno is one made with lamb and the other with beef.

So you had the one made from lamb?

I hope so, beef brings me out in scabs.

I would contend that most "shepherds" pies are in fact beef based rather than lamb based.   I always felt,  certainly erroneously,  that an addition of cheese converted a shepherd's pie to a cottage pie. Confused no doubt by cottage cheese.

I would refute your statement. Cottage pie is traditionally made with beef, whereas Sheperds pie is traditionally made with lamb.

And I should know: I'm a shepard and I live in a cottage.

Had you read the earlier post, you would see a unanimity on the definition of shepherd's pie being lamb based.....however there does appear to be confusion on the matter hence the use of "   " on the word shepherd's.

Most items retailing as shepherd's pie are surely beef based.

  Can I recommend the Sainsbury's shepherd's pie

Sainsbury's taste the difference, 400g, £2.49
Not a bad effort and satisfyingly rich.
3 stars

Waitrose, 750g, £5.49
Not a classic. There's cheese on top, and the meat and potato are too chunky. Sludgy mince. The flavour hasn't bled into the sauce.

My sincere apologies, it seems I was somewhat rash with my post.
I bow to your greater knowledge of potato/meat based dishes.

I've always felt the lack of pastry in a shepherd's pie to be a bit of a con.....past debates have shown that pies are very close to the heart of many TEF contributors.

An analogous situation would be the the naming of the Iron Age site at Barbury as a "castle" when in fact, there is no or never has been a castle at all.

That's bollocks! There was no cheese on it, and to say the mince was sludgy is quite frankly offensive.

I agree reg, it should be renamed "shepherd's potato suprise" with immediate effect.

Barbury Casle should be renamed "windy field with some archaeological interest". That may be based on my childhood memories of being dragged to such places for Sunday afternoon walks. This has infact scarred me for life, putting me off any outside scenery and leaving me in favour of building big concrete carparks in any such green spaces.

Reg Smeeton,

I'm always particularly offended by the sort of fish "pie" trotted out by that monkey mouthed estuary twat Oliver et al.

No meat. No pastry. A kind of poncey cream and white wine sauce.

WRONG!
