A Real Madrid player with the initials ZZ wore a no. 5 shirt. I think he may be out of contract?

When I started, keepers had a plain shirt... RB was 2, LB 3, CH 5 then wing halves were 4 and 6. Inside forwards were 8 and 10... wingers 7 and 11, CF 9.
Then keepers got a 1..... Everton were one of the first to fuck about with this, when they had John Hurst who wore 10 and played at the back or as a DM. Think it was after Italia 90 that squad numbers were introduced... and I lost interest in who wore what. Still couldn't tell you what any of our players since wore, as their significance became irrelevant.
I recall that Charlton had an outfield player using number 1 in/around 1993

Famously Ossie wore 1, playing for Argentina in 78. They numbered the squad alphabetically.

I have just undertaken a google search to 'verify' this. It appears that there was a similar thread on a Charlton Athletic forum. How great minds think alike !

Not entirely convinced he would be a target for PB, I would welcome him back but not sure his wages would fit into our tight budget now. Several clubs after Ajose too, most from higher leagues.

If budget is an issue for Fortune, it most certainly will be for Ajose too.

Ajose already has a salary with another club, though. He'd get paid regardless. MAF was a free agent.
I doubt he'll come if teams higher up want him though.

Charlton only able to name 5 players on the bench so unless they sign a fair few, I can't see ajose being allowed to leave for anyone.

I’d imagine the offer for Fortune was based on what we thought he was worth, not what we could afford. Anyway, Deadline Day - thank God it closes at 5pm instead of the usual 11pm. Hope to see 2 in today. Weird that nobody has a clue who they may be. The club have been really tight this year.

Power spoke about the offer on Saturday pre game. Basically he said that Fortune wanted to play every game and Brown said he wouldn't play every game so offered him a contract that reflected that. Fortune decided to go to Chesterfield where he would play week in week out for similar money. If Brown really wanted Fortune and thought he would be a major aquisition then we would have signed him.

Isn’t the transfer deadline still 31st August to all intents and purposes as you can still sign loanees, free agents and players on loan with a view to a permanent transfer until then?

Yep EFL clubs will still be able to sign players on loan up to August 31, 2018.
They will also be able to sign players on loan with an option to agree a permanent transfer when the next window opens up to August 31.
