If the pitch is going to break up by Sunday as the papers say, the key could be the toss - win it and bat, please!

I don't care who the key man is, as long as somebody in each test has the game of his life, be it KP, Freddy, Strauss, Harmison....

I realise this may be an unpopular opinion, but I fucking love the Aussies.  I love their attitude, their spirit, I just think that when it comes down to it Australia must be the greatest country on the planet.   I need to revisit the golden land soon!!

That being said it'd still be nice to see a close test series going down to the wire.  And I wouldn't even mind if the England and Wales Cricket Board win it.  Let's just not get too anti Aussie, they've always backed us lot up in the past.

As long as KP can put 70-100 runs on the board with support from Jones and more likely Hoggard, then we are still perfectly capable of winning this game. I think that 150 should be a reasonable target, but we will have to bat well second time around.

Agree Spuddy.
Most of the batsmen were awful, but i think the pitch is fucked. There is no way all those wickets should go down on just one day.Mcgrath just showed us yet again, that he is one of the best bowlers ever.
The only plus point that i can think of is that we did bowl well, the first day at brisbane in the last ashes series was a lot worse than yesterday,on that day they batted us into submission.I feel we can get 20 wickets now, unlike the last ashes series, but they have two of the best bowlers ever, and our batsmen are going to struggle. The difference between the aussies and everone else is warne and mcgrath,to me they are the reason why the aussies dominate world cricket.

Title: ashes-first test
Post by: janaage on Friday, July 22, 2005, 08:36:09
I agree, although the pitch does look very ropey, I thought some of the batting was dreadful.  Made for great entertainment though.

Title: ashes-first test

i think was wickets of vaughan and flinty were abit unlucky due to the ball dying on them off the pitch. otherwise england were too scared to get forward to the ball, as they all were abit nervous.

More fun commentry from Sky's internet service:

Quote
243-3 - Gee, this boy's got talent. Clarke off the back-foot to the cover fence for another boundary. A slower ball goes all wrong and Martyn matches his partner. He then clips the third four of the over past square leg. That's 100 runs in this session in 18 overs - I don't know what England had in their tea, rophynol by the looks of it.

Yea but neither could the Aussies in the 1st innings. Rain predicted for tomorrow.

The pitch seems to have settled well now and if we get the Aussies out by lunch tomorrow it looks like it could be a good batting track.

we have as good as lost the test now. yes we have 3 days to get 300-400 but we really dont have a hope in hell if our batsmen cant even get into double figures

Yea but neither could the Aussies in the 1st innings. Rain predicted for tomorrow.

The pitch seems to have settled well now and if we get the Aussies out by lunch tomorrow it looks like it could be a good batting track.

yes but only if we play sensibly and tresco and struass actually use their feet against mcgrath otherwise he we bowl us out again. it is clear  that if you dont play to balls outside the off stump and wait for the bad ball onto the legs then runs will come

mcgrath wont bowl any bad balls though so that's a totally useless policy

these guys know how to bat, just let them do it rather than telling them how to play two of the greatest ever bowlers

It's going to be a bugger tomorrow (sorry - today now :-). One of the blokes at work was tellling me about the TV analysis and they reviewed the pitch where McGrath had been pitching. It looked like he had hit the yarking great crack on a length nearly every ball. Hope he has too many beers tonight or we're shagged.

Only 420 to get, we should be able to win this one by the end of today.

Catching's been poor this test, which is something we've been good at for the past year or so.

Going to be really hard, rain may save us. I want to see the opening batsman show what they can do.

If we get over 300 it will be a good effort. Only hope now is to avoid total humilitaion.

Like the commentators are saying, we should just bat and if we get near to the total then thats a bonus.

Then we lose 2 wickets in about 3 overs I thought we'd made some progress in recent seasons, but we''re sadly back to incompetence.

167-9, I thought we were going to do better than this, a lot of work to do before the 2nd test starts.

This attitude really bugs me.We lose one test against the best team in the world and yet again we are the worst team ever to play international cricket. Its not true ,we have improved big time,of course we were fucking useless[apart from the first morning]but its not all over yet, there are still 4 tests to go.Admittedly we need warne and mcgrath to get injured but you never know.
Plus watching warne did anyone notice that his trousers seem to have more of a flare than anyone elses,i think he is trying to balance his lard arse figure up,the vain wanker. :)
