Title: Lilian Nallis.
Post by: herthab on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 05:42:41
At Swindon on trial.

36 now, but very experienced. Might do a job for a season?

He's a defensive midfielder, which requires less pace, more guile, so i'm not too concerned with his age. Plenty of experience in the CCC, a decent potential signing imo

Another Sturrock old boy.

Title: Re: Lilian Nallis.

Even Sturrock leaving won't stop us signing his oldies :D

Still, could be a decent signing depending on his fitness levels, althought that would have been better if we'd been able to take him to Austria for that.

Nallis.
Who the fuck is Nallis.

:)

36 years old, but played 40 odd games last season. Not exactly a long term buy, but certainly has the pedigree and I guess beggars can't be choosers

Nalis could certainly do a job for us in the holding midfield role. He's got the pedigree, let's hope
he's still got the desire.

Post by: Peter Venkman on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 11:53:27
The Plmuff fans seem sad at letting him go, they say he has the desire, and pretty much of the fitness to continue, sounds a more promising player than Maher to me.

Title: Re: Lilian Nallis.
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 11:59:10
Read a comment on one of their sites saying his legs seem to go a bit towards the end of last season, but that he is more than capable at this levelm, an possibly still at CCC level (but not week in week out for the full 90).

One assume that Timlin and Easton would get most of the games in CM anyway, so even if he isn't quite as mobile as he used to he'll be fine.

Post by: STFC Bart on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 12:43:16
Work with a Leicester fan. He sdays he has a decent shot on him- but is slow and strolls around in midfield for long spells.

Mind you- the Plymouth fans opinions are probably more valid as that is where he has been more recently

Think Bart is getting more subtle in his put downs.....slow and strolls around is the key. This sort of thing is anathema to the average English football fan.

Personally think we are wasting our time here...not good.

I hope the lack of action in the transfer market doesn't make us get all desperate but this move seems to reek of desperation

Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 14:49:11
I wouldn't say it's desperation at all, after all MM he checking him out first by giving him a trial as opposed to signing him outright.

MM seems to have a very clear idea about what sort of player he wants and I do not think that any snap decisions will be made. Going by what I have heard he could turn out to be great in L1 for a year or even 2 anyway.

I think a trial is a good idea. Players don't always do well at every club they play for.

Interesting.

When I lived in Plymouth he was the only player I was seemed to see out-and-about - always with his family. He was very highly regarded at Plymouth, got a good send off etc... I don't see anything wrong with a 6 month/season contract.

Title: Re: Lilian Nallis.
Post by: Spud on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 16:34:55
We've got a young squad so a bit of experience in the midfield area will be a great addition for us.

Nallis could play the sitting back midfield role which would let Timlin/Easton get forward, obviously it depends on if Nallis get's picked in the first place.

I just listened to his interview on t'official site and he came accross very well. In fact, I would offer him a two year deal on the basis of that interview alone.

Seriously (It was a very good interview though). Although I hate jumping on band wagons (very bad idea from a health and safety perspective apart from anything else) I can't help but wonder if maybe, just maybe, the numpties on thisis have a point about Malpas not being able to attract players to the club. I prefer to think that the club are operating in a transfer market which has been horribly inflated due to certain clubs (and there are still plenty around in spite of what as happened at Rotherham, Luton etc) spending silly money (money they may well not have) on players who really aren't worth a piss in the wind and that in the end, Fitton and Malpas will have been proved right and hailed as football geniuses...

..it would be scary if the numpties were right though

Everything i've seen about him over various forums seems positive. Maybe Malpas does want to sign him but just wants him to prove his fitness for a week or two before doing so.

Title: Re: Lilian Nallis.
Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 17:56:22
The Numpties on thisis won't even give credit to MM for the signing of Cox and wee Macca.

They signed when MM WAS manager (Along with Kanyuka and Timlin), and so their logic is null and void.

Cox, McNamee, Kanuyka, Timlin, Amwanker.

Nalis sounds ok....I would have thought we'd be after an attacking midfielder because the likes of Easton, Peacock and Timlin all do well on the defensive side of things....but then maybe if we did have Nalis holding the others could get forward.

Sounds like a decent enough short term stop gap.

No fair Bangkok - the thisis forum, just like this one, has some posters who rate Malpas and some who don't, and even more in between. Just because a few won't give Malpas any credit you should'n't lump us all together.

By the way - nalis would be a good signing IMO

Title: Re: Lilian Nallis.
Post by: Rich Pullen on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 18:19:17
If Dennis Wise would have followed this logic we'd have signed Chris McPhee - a new manager can demand "my house - my rules". Malpas went with advice, sold the new era to the players and they joined.

Cox could've have easily joined a more stable (at the time) Northampton.

Cox, McNamee, Kanuyka, Timlin, Amwanker.
Yes but the perception is that (apart from Amwanker) he hasn't actually gone out and got anyone The players that have come in were already set up for him.

Anywhoo, I'm not going to go on about or I'll sound like a fucking thisis numpty (is that the correct singular of numties?) It's just that when I read about Nalis my first thought was,'Ooooh, Maurice is running short of ideas..I wonder who he could have been talking to???'

My second thought I have to add, was 'Hmmmmm..Nalis could do a good job for us'

Sorry, what do you mean? I'm a bit thick like.

(If I remember accurately) Chris McPhee had an offer in place from Onuora but the change of manager killed the deal ... at least McPhee was still begging for a contract after Iffy was sent packing.

So, if Wise had followed the previous regime we would have had Chris McPhee in the ranks.

Now I doubted myself - Hmm.

You'd have to be a right muppet to turn down such signings though. Anyway, Sturrock brought in all his old boys, you may equally say that he had a tough time attracting anyone new to the club (that's not my point of view, more me playing devil's advocate).

Post by: Dazzza on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, 19:43:44
I like the old Maurice attitude test and I don’t think it’s a case of him struggling to attract players more the lack of movement in the transfer market.

There’s definitely a lot less players out of contract this summer and after the shenanigans of recent seasons where a lot of clubs were turning over players right, left and centre many appear to be getting little more prudent in retaining players on slightly longer contracts.

Mulgrew was a kick in the tits and Maher was just down to petulance on his behalf but I have to agree if the attitude isn’t there then sack them off and move on.

Aside from the above, out of interest can anyone pull a few a names from their clacker valve that would have fit the criteria that potentially we should of or could have signed over the summer?

nalis can sling them home from range.

we're clearly after a left back, i dont understand why we dont have a proper dig at davis, he's presumably available at a cut-price and would do a sterling job, again providing a touch of experience, not to mention bite, to a young kind've lightweight side.

Reading other forums it seems he would be a handy addition now all we need is a right and left winger and a left back.

Personally i would like to see someone up front to come in and get on the end of those crosses but i can see it is wise to see how paynter does and see how corrs fitness is come january then see if we need one.

Imagine Akifewa on the end of mcnamee's crosses.

You cant really tell with a player like this.

Every manager has to be allowed one summer panic buy just to cover themselves for bods if things dont work out on deadline day. Sturrocks last season was Kaid Mohammed. Wise had Royce Brownlie.

Exactly. Fair play to Wise he didnt make many bad signings. I suppose it is a bit unfair to put Nalis in the unknown category, but he is old and he does seem very keen on a contract. And who wouldnt, this is STFC after all. Ahem. Sturrock also had Steve Adams (crap).

Andy Kings best example was Darren Dykes. God to think I was once excited enough about Tony Thorpe and Gareth Whalley to go to a friendly at Buckingham Town!!!

Undisputed Fuhrer of the stocking filler signings would have to be Colin Todd who managed to asembled an entire squad of these players! Remarkable achievement.

i can imagine nallis becoming a cult favourite this season.

I hope so - Many Plymouth fans were adamant he could still do a good job in the Championship. Both the Devon lot and Leicester hold him in high regard.

He is no Paul Smith or any other oldie in need for a contract somewhere... I'm sure Nalis didn't need to join Swindon, he wanted to... I'm not worried by his age at all... He could prove very important.
