I don't want to predict a win, as I might jinx it!

Could be a case of 'After The Lord Mayors Show', but I hope not.

See you in The Merlin.............................

Moses had one earlier, should have given Sturrock a tap in but tried to beat one too many and by the time Sturrock got it much harder chance ... so he blazed it over.

Bit annoying to concede late on like that but it sounds like weren't that great so a point isn't too much of a let down. Still on our unbeaten run, still in touch with the play offs (even though I don't think we'll make them) and 8 points from 12 isn't too bad now is it!

The most frustrating game for a long time!

We played awfully for the best part, scored a scrappy, out of nothing goal and then decided that instead of just doing the simple things right and closing out the game, it'd be a good idea to try and beat people in our own half, give the ball away, pass our way out of trouble and give away set piece after set piece despite knowing they've got a lot of height and good delivery! So pissed off it's unreal.

Title: Swindon V Bollocks Matchday Thread.
Post by: Batch on Saturday, February 2, 2008, 17:25:48
No complaints from me. We were flat today and Northampton were the better team, with a striker they might have stole the game :)

Bit dissapointing coming so close to 3 points, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Line drawn underneath it, bring on the next game.

Ps. Hope nobody got clamped for parking at the transfer bridges.

shit game draw fair result. and on that performance the two new players seem a bit gash.
the forward seems just like onion bahji and the winger kept running down blind alleys.
wont judge them on that though as the whole team(aljofree and ifil apart)were a bit rubbish.
i know akinfatwa scored but fuck me he must weight 18 stone.i'm glad we didn't take him.

rubbish game and got what we deserved.

Moses cant seem to jump and Roberts first touch always goes about 5 yards infront of him.

We miss Easton because he drops back and gets the ball from the defence so it isnt hoof after hoof after hoof.

Also, when Sturrock works the channels for the love of god someone, anyone get in the box so he has a few people to aim at.

The Ref was on no one sides, constantly blowing his whistle for all sorts of rubbish no fouls and people falling over, complete joke of a ref.

Ashikod didn't jump for the ball once... was really starting to fuck me off and looked gash.
McNamee I think looks decent, just didn't seem to ever take there defender on and danced around in front of him.
Really missed Easton as the game seemed to pass the midfield with aimless hoofs upfield and JPM really isn't as good as I thought he was.
Corr is becoming a bit of a joke now, alwasy injured or suspended.
Why can#t we defend freekicks and why do we always give needeless setpieces away and invite pressure in the last 15 monutes of games.
Zaboob needs to start fucking about with the ball in dangerous areas.
All in all - a fucking load of shit. Rant over

I actually thought Moses put a decent shift in, worked hard, there was a touch of Fola Onion Bhaji about his clumsiness but still effective at times.

McNamee looks like he's got bags of skill if Vincent just played it TO EFFING FEET!!

Couldn't disagree with you at all, most importantly why the fuck does zaaboub fanny around with the ball in his own half, just clear your lines and hit the front man. McNamee just flatters to deceive, neither him nor roberts were wide enough today, neither beat their full back and whipped the ball in early!

Arrggggghhhh one of those games today. We didn't look up for the fight. A draw was a fair result though because both teams were very poor. We seemed to improve a little in the second half after a dreadful first half of hoof ball. But even then we struggled to defend set plays and it has cost us. Why can't we cope with set pieces into the box?

Shame about Cox and also Corr going off was a huge blow for us. Sturrock did OK and put all the effort in like usual but he just doesn't have that quality. We miss Easton so much it's unbelievable really. JPM in the centre just isn't working. Thought Zaaboub was dreadful like always and it's really annoying that Mcnamee can only play 60 minutes.

And what a shocker of a game. Zaboob's fucking about cost us dear!

Zaaboub should be shot, not just once did he try a fancy flick which resulted in the goal but then he tries it again and again.
We didn't deserve to win, has anyone else mentioned Peacocks miss?
Fantastic pass from Moses through three defenders, Peacock six yards out and hits it straight at the keeper, I was waiting for the net to bulge, shocker. Sturrock played his socks off again when he came on, but again another glaring miss with his first touch from twelve yards.

Ok I couldn't see that from the Kingswood Stand, just couldn't believe it didn't go in, certainly didn't see a defender on the line.

Is it only me, or is booing your team after a draw the mark of a moronic bunch of tossers?

There were a couple of blokes near me that actually gave Sturrock stick as soon as he came on and continued it after every touch he had. When he scored I called one of them a prick and he sat down.

Sturrock may(is) not be the most gifted player we have, but he works his bollocks off and doesn't deserve the stick he gets.

Maybe all clubs have them, but the cunts who shout and boo players really get on my tits.

I don’t boo strurrock but apart from working hard what does he add to the team. He is not fast, cant head or hold up the ball very well and his finishing is usually poor. Really shit game today and the flat performance really affected the crowd. Mark little was superb for them, for us I thought peacock was mom however crosses were not defended well and we so need a centre mid that can put his foot on the ball and dictate play.

I disagree with the hold up the ball part and, as DV said, he was the one who got in the position to score today.

Hes just not a target man, saying that I've been very impressed with Blair the way he holds up the ball waiting, and waiting and waiting for someone to move into the space. He is not blessed with pace but he does have a football brain.

In a perfect world, we would perform like we did against Forest, but it's not going to happen. You're going to have games like today, where it's a tight scrappy match, but at the end of the day, we've continued our unbeaten run, and still only six points off the play-offs, with two games in hand.

I have said this before on another thread.

But I remember us being top of the league, under Steve "I'm a cunt" McMahon.

We had a home match in the Mickey Mouse cup at home to Hereford, Chalkie scored the winner from Hereford (To a standing ovation from most town fans).

At the final whistle, when we lost in a completely insignigicant competition and despite us being top (Going on to be champions). About 10 dicks started to boooooooo.

My mate pulled me away, good job really as even if I was a big chap then I was outnumbered by 10/1.

In saying that though at least they where there, and at leasy the twats booing today where there I.E. paying their hard earned.

As much as I agree with you Fred, we can't afford tp be fussy. At least not until we make it to the Prem in which case alot of the 'supporters' are wearing Manure, Arsenal, Chelski tops ect.

I think we've got to put this into context. At the start of the season if you told me we'd be comfortable mid table I'd have snatched your hand off. If you told me the Greek and his friends had fucked off, I'd have been in heaven. Its all change - the mangerial team is all change, a lot of players have changed, off the pitch its all changed.
Yes today was crap but I'd expect a lot of inconsistency while things bed down. The main thing is to get a lot of crap out of the way this season so next season we can really go for it.
I thought Peacock was MOM. While i'm a big Vincent fan, he was crap today. JPM I really don't like - he's a luxury player. We really do miss Easton and a creative partner for him is a real priority. As someone else said Moses is a latter day Onion Bhaji. God was Roberts crap today.
Basically crap today but I still remain really optimisistic about tomorrow.

our fans boo everytime we don't win. it's absurd but i've gone past caring - it's the same with people moaning about sturrock and zaaboub everytime they make the slightest errors.

i must have seen a different game to most because i thought zaaboub did well when he came on. i'm not sure it's fair to blame him for the goal considering it didn't look like a corner and he's never going to be key at defending set pieces. nevertheless, i was in the town end so my view wasn't great.

moses looks a decent player. nothing special but he's got a bit of pace, he's strong and is able to win the ball and keep hold of it. the square ball he played across the six yard box was a sublime piece of awareness and intelligence, only a superhuman block kept that out and moses would have been the architect. sadly he looked fucked for the last half an hour, i think he's lacking in fitness somewhat - i'd imagine he'd have been subbed off were it not for corr's injury.

i thought jerel loooked a little below par today, i only mention it because it's so rare! defensively we were sound but lack the goalscoring ability up front, despite sturrock's effort and work rate he is not a goalscorer and lacks quality.

painfully boring game though!

With Zaaboob he could have done many things instead of a stupid effort of a fancy flick when it comes off we can all roar with pleasure, but at that time of the game it was senseless, maybe it wasn't a corner but Zaaboob needs to make better decisions. He could of held the ball up, kicked it into the stand, put it down near the corner flag, but at that stage of the game you dont try anything fancy.

Chalkie's bang on the money. Despite todays shit performance, at least we got a point against a half decent Cobblers outfit.

When we get Easton back in the middle, Cox up front and some competition for places all over, I think we'll at least end up safe in this division. That for me is fucking progress.

There is nothing wrong with Sturrock at all - at least he puts in the effort, and he fucking scored. Some fans are just idiots

I was pretty annoyed with the small section of our fans booing the team of at half time and full time.

It was a poor performance, but it's not like Northampton are bottom with a shit vein of form. The are but one point behind us FFS. We aren't going to just steamroller everyone in sight.

Macnamee looked like he had some potential, he just didn't seem to be making the right runs, and when he did get into space the balls played to him weren't what he needed. Looked to me like their right back had the measure of him and knew how to stifle him. He'll come good I think.

We did look a completely different proposition down the left when Zaboub came on, and had he not given the ball away in such a stupid fashion in the build up to their goal I would have said he'd done well. He needs to have the sense to restrict those sort of flicks to the area around their penalty area.

I thought Ashikodi was poor, although very unfortunate with the pull back in the second half. Towards the end of the first half he managed to get into their area, I couldn't see exactly what happened from where I was but it looked like we'd have scored if he'd pulled it back instead of trying to o round the keeper. Anyone get a better view of that?

With Zaaboob he could have done many things instead of a stupid effort of a fancy flick when it comes off we can all roar with pleasure, but at that time of the game it was senseless, maybe it wasn't a corner but Zaaboob needs to make better decisions. He could of held the ball up, kicked it into the stand, put it down near the corner flag, but at that stage of the game you dont try anything fancy.
perhaps i'm being overly cynical but i have to wonder whether people would be so harsh on easton or cox in a similar situation.

the point is that with cox or easty they're not constantly making mistakes like sophie makes...

I think we expected Northampton to roll over today and give us an easy 3-0 win (Cox maybe scoring a hat trick!). But after 10 minutes you could see it wasnt that sort of game. They were big strong, hard, organised. It was like playing AGAINST a Paul Sturrock side. They made sure they won their battles and got a rough deal out of the ref in my opinion. A draw was a fair result, but the game was pretty dire.

Shame because we had 7000 home fans which is decent. Hopefully people will turn out for Cheltenham in the mid week game. Their support was absolute shit. Swindon Northampton was a tasty game once, but now they have nothing about them.

Fucking Cheltnumb   we badly need to do something about these at the CG....they've already become some sort of bogie team, consider the Scum, who have down the years had one or two decent sides have only one the once at the CG in probably 20+ attempts, whereas the Numb, have 2 in 2 , with poor looking sides.

History with the Cobblers goes back to the early 60's when they cheated us to get us relegated  in 65.  Its been a sporadic rivalry since, flaring up quite nastily on occasions.....

Now it seems the rivalry, is who has the real HQ of Nationwide.

Several occasions this season had ne not scored we wouldnt have even got a point.  He works hard which is a damn site more than we can say about some of the other players of late but the lad just simply cannot do anything right in some peoples eyes.

i don't see the point in booing a player if they're not good enough - it's hardly their fault that the manager selected them.

if they give less than total committment then i think it's warranted.

in respect to the zaboub fancy flick. just before the flick he had looked up and saw sturrock and roberts in acres of space, if the flick had come off he would have played a through ball to them and they would have been in on goal. personally i think it was worth attempting.

Zaaboub offered more in the few minutes he was on than McNamee had.
I hope I'm wrong but McNamee looks like a latter day Davy Cunningham - clever, good at keeping the ball but zero end product.
Zaaboub looks much stronger and has a wicked cross on him. He also works up and down the line. His first 2 or 3 flicks were pure class - one didn't quite work out but if it had then we'd have had a 2 on 1. His last 2 or 3 flicks pure idiocy. I don't think, however, him fannying around in thier half makes him culpable for the goal. Its more a question of how a 20 stone Barry White lookalike can put his head on the ball 6 yards out in the middle of goal without a challenge.
Basically, I like Zaboub. He offers something different. If it wasn't for his occasional idiocy he'd be playing at a much better level.
Also Fatbury what is his terrible professionalism off the field. I'm aware of a few other players unprofessionalism but not his.

I couldn't give a monkeys what he does off the field, as long as he performs on the day, unfortunately he cost us two points on Saturday.

I do remember a completely different Zaaboub against Luton earlier this season, that flick down the line was Premier class, its just knowing when to do it, against Northampton at that stage of the game was not the time.

Why? Was he supposed to be marking "The Fridge"? If Brez didn't stay rooted to his line for anything other than routine crosses , he would have cleared that cross. The Boob wasn't the only person to needlessly give the ball away - Vincent did it all game and McGovern never got near enough to the ball to give it away!

i really can't understand how people can hold zaaboub responsible for a goal that was conceded from a set piece, even if he was responsible for losing the ball. it's not as if he let akinfenwa get a free header and didn't come off his line, is it?

Brez was at fault for the cross, no doubt, he was brave and faultless up until that time.
But it all resulted from Zaaboub trying to be flashy down the line, he had so many better options, hold the ball, kick the ball into row Z or just knock it down the line; he gave away possession needlessly, the flick was not an option to try when we were 1-0 up, simple as that.

it was a bit reckless i'l give you that. But in between him giving the ball away and them scoring who charged down there bloke who shot. Why was that bloke even allowed to have a shot in the first place. And corners are easy (in theory) to defend. You stick your best header against theirs. I dont know who was meant to be marking akinfenwa, but he certainly should have done better than he did.

Im no great fan of zaboub, but its harsh to criticise him for the goal. If it was lee peacock or craig easton (if he was playing) who gave the ball away then the goal would of magically become brez's fault, which it was.

Title: Swindon V Bollocks Matchday Thread.

It was the whole team's fault for failing to clear their lines properly and keep the ball in the other half when under pressure.

Yes, Zaaboub made the error that led to the corner. It could have easily been someone else who messed that up though. Brez was at fault for the goal too.

All in all it was a shocking team effort, especially towards the end of the match. Laying the blame on individuals is stupid as it detracts away from that fact.

Zaaboub's and Brez's individual errors are things I'd expect Malpas to work with them on so they don't happen again.

I've just trawled through a load of this thread. hmmm, alot of bollocks is one wa of putting it.

I find it amusing how people refer to the townend booing, then purely out of spite, stupidity or just ignorance, people make wild statements about players without much foundation; it's the same kind of thick as fuck mentality.

We weren't great and some of our players were off their game. It happens, this is league 1 FFS. If 'Boub and 'Berts were on form all the time they would not play for us. They play at this level because they can't hold their game at one level for months on end. No?

If you hate a player you see them play shit you feel vindicated and happy. If you like a player or believe they're good, you see them make a mistake when  something doesn't come off. That's life. - You don't shoot, you don't score. You don't ask, you don't get. You don't try, you don't fail. At least some people have a fucking go.

IMAO they're both worth their weight in gold. We dropped 2 points, so what, we're not fucking going down are we?

Jesus fucking christ. Yes it felt like a loss, i'd already believed it was won too, but in hindsight we looked like losing, so i see it as a point gained.

Oh and someone said we were cruising until they scored?! What?! I don't know what game they saw, but there was no "cruising" in the one i saw. Apart from about 20 minutes it was very much backs against the wall, which just goes to show we all see a different game.

I'm sick to the back teeth of constant fucking whinging and moaning. It's almost as bad as the booing in my eyes. See the positive side for a change, it won't fucking kill you. :exasperated:  :D

Difference being of course Dave, neither Easton or Peacock would have tried the flick.
I know what you are saying though, with Zaaboub when it comes off well then its brilliant and the roar rolls around the stadium.
There is just a time and a place to try those little flicks, as skilful as he is, this was not the time,  just a couple of minutes to go play it safe.

I was pretty frustrated on Saturday, we put 10 men behind the ball most of the game, so when we won possession there was no option to break quickly, on the occasion when Zaaboub lost possession we actually committed four players forward leaving gaps at the back, we should be just seeing out  the game. Another reason why Zaaboub's option was wrong.

It doesn't have to be a fancy flick to give the ball away. A misplaced pass or a heavy first touch would have had just the same effect.

Yep.

I agree with that. Some people (well quite a lot actually) are overly critical. There are also some that find it hard to be objective because they are so wrapped up with STFC. I think that's true accross the board though. I think all clubs' fans are, in the main, overly critical and need to take a step back/smell the coffee/relax/get out more and so on and so forth.

As you rightly say, the team cannot be world beaters every game. That's why they're in League 1. Likewise, Roberts and Zaaboub and others cannot be world beaters every game. That's why they play for a League 1 team.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion (well that's what they say. I'm not sure I necessarily agree but that's beside the point :? ) A lot of the comments about certain players though, are completely OTT in my humble opinion.

I think the main issue with Saturday was the sheer size of the Northampton team, which we were unable to deal with all game.  Add in the fact not winning many 1st balls meant we cleared a lot while under pressure and it ultimately ended up in long balls to clear the lines providing little in the way of decent possession.  Their goal was merely a matter of the law of averages, they won so many headers it was almost inevitable they'd win one that mattered.

A point gained in my book and we can and will perform better.  Nicely positioned in the league all things considered and still keeping up the unbeaten run.  2 years ago we'd have been dicked.

Zaaboub's and Brez's individual errors are things I'd expect Malpas to work with them on so they don't happen again.
He should have a word with Comminges too - he was the one who didn't pick up his man in the box.

To me it just looked like Comminges wasn't strong enough to cope with him. Akinfenwa held him off with one arm and headed home, it was far too easy for him. Had Ifil, or even Aljofree, been marking Akinfenwa I don't think we'd have had the problem.
