Title: To freesat from sky?
Post by: 4D on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 11:37:39
Currently have sky but thinking of going over to freesat. Do I need to buy anything?

Your old Sky card should allow FTA/FTV viewing. Not sure if there is a difference in channel lineup between an old Sky card, and a freesatfromSky card. Didn't used to be but that was a while ago (actually a quick search suggests C5 is removed from EPG using expired Sky card). You may be able to manually tune any that are missing from the EPG.

If you need the freesatfrosky card its £25 but your old sky didgibox and dish will work fine.

Note that some "must be free" channels actually aren't on Satellite. e.g. E4 I think is a subscription channel.

Also note that your Sky+ functionality (if you have it) will not work after cancellation. And any old recordings are only viewable if you have a current valid subscription for the recorded channel.
----
Oh, if you do use your old Sky card I guess they may do a replacement card program at some point, in which case you may need to purchase the freesatfromsky card at that point.

Ta. Freesat has a pause/rewind live tv function, doesn't it?

Dont do it freesat is shit!

Who is your broadband with?

Youview is the way to, box's are £250 if you buy one from retail store but think BT are giving them away if you sign up to their broadband. Youview has the rewind, pause, etc as well as instant catch up for last 7 days.

Only if you get a Freesat + box

Was assuming you were just going to use your old Sky box.

But as Si Pie said, only if you bug a new digibox.

+1 for YouView.

IPTV channels will be coming this summer too. And if you get the box from BT you'll get a good deal on their BT Sport channels when they launch too.

Isn't youview just a freeview/freesat + box with a load of catch up and on demand telly thrown in?

Still can't believe the prices of PVRs these days. I bought a cheap Freeview+ box when they were first released for £80 in Dixons.

Keep sky. Ring them and tell them you are skint and cannot afford to keep it, they should offer you discount

I moved to freesat from sky about 6 years ago when sky tried ripping me off over a box repair. Personally I think it is great as it has all of the channels I watch (except Dave which means switching over to freeview, and the occasional match on sky sports).

I have just left BT broadband for Virgin
They were expensive and very slow and despite numerous engineer call outs didn't improve
Virgin engineer tested the BT line and said I had a 2mb download
Was over 60 on virgin which worked out cheaper too
Fuck BT

The fibre optic is alright, the home hub does annoy the shit out of me though but that's quite standard for any wireless device.

Sorry to resurrect this, just off hired sky as watch bugger all on it really and costing an arm and leg.
Mrs watches all the shit soaps on free terrestrial channels and we watch a lot of Amazon prime or netflix anyway.

So is it worth buying a free sat box ? Or a skyforfreeview card ?

She wants a record facility but bluray player and TV have catch up on anyway

 :hmmm:

I ditched Sky in favour of freesat. Get a freesat box, which will allow you to record and pause/rewind live tv.

Sky are a bunch of rip off cunts.

a fresatfrimsky card is a pointless purchase. your deactivated sky card will do the same thing. neither will allow you to record once your sky subs expires.

I ended up keeping sky as they gave me 50% off for a year.

Yeah just been looking at freesat boxes
Looks the way to go

Yeah they did try the reduced price pitch but for what I actually watch on sky still a waste

Appreciate the feedback

Just done the same, their customer service is awful. There attempt to keep me as a loyal customer included the line 'you do realise if you leave you can't come back to us for 3 years'.

Complete wankers Sky, glad to be shot of them.

That's complete bollocks, if you could be bothered you should moan. They'll be sending you 50%, 60, maybe 75% off fliers in the next few months! You only have to wait 1 year to qualify for new customer status FFS!

But yes, I nearly cancelled as well. The way I looked at it was the package I now have is now £16.50 for a month  (£198 p/a). The Humax 1000s freesat box is £169.99 (new), so is it worth £30 of my money? For me it is, what with the kids channels, and Fox and stuff. Though clearly after 10 months the freesat box would have paid for itself.

As long as you know that the freesat card/expired sky card won't let you record, that's the main thing.

I know Batch, but it got so far down the line I'd had enough. They're fucking lying wankers, and the only thing I could do was withdraw my custom. Added to that their rural Internet service is fucking non existent. So cheerio it is.

So far BT's internet is better and fibre optic is coming in the next 6 months, added to that it around a 30 quid a month saving. All good.

My skyhd box is in need of replacing. Playing up from time to time and is 6 years old now.
Gonna see what sky offer me as I have no intention of leaving them if they play ball.
Their tv wipes the floor with everything else.

if you get to the stage of threatening or actually cancelling there is a good chance of getting a free replacement.

to be honest, older 500gb/non WiFi second hand hd boxes can be got for £20 or so now anyway.

It had cancelled programs from the planner that were set to record. Has no program details when pressing select at times. Takes time when changing channels sometimes too. If I reboot it it's ok but think it's on the slide now.

be careful to do a rebuild/housekeeping and not a reset..
