Title: Wireless Internet Help
Post by: Fred Elliot on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 17:47:14
Has really slowed up and is beginning to piss me off.

I have run Norton anti spyware and anti virus but has turned up nothing.

Are there any settings that I can look at to see if it is something in Windows that is restricting the speed ?

Cheers chaps

Are you using an encryption jobby? Maybe one of your neighbours is stealing your internet.

Is your network protected he means. Like do you have to have a password to access it, or if you do make sure it's not 'admin' or something like that because your neighbours can hack it.

Close your internet browser and anything else that might be using the internet, but leave your router on.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE

Then the 'Networking' tab.

It'll tell you if there's any wireless network activity.

how many computers use your wireless internet? It's been a while sinse I did any wireless networky stuff but connect to your wireless router by putting the address 192.168.0.1 (hopefully) in your internet browser.

You should be able to see how many ip addresses have been asigned somewhere in there but I can't remember the proper names of stuff so you might have to click around for a bit.

There are several options for security, do the encyption thing only for now. You need to do as ben said and go to 192.168.0.1 (type this into the address bar, like you would a normal website). There should be menu that displays on screen. If you find the option for encryption you should have the option of making a password using ASCII keys (like a normal password). Make a password.

You will then need to access your network card settings on your pc and do the same there. That way the network card tells the router the password and it can connect.

Btw, another useful thing to know is that internet service providers do tend to throttle speed at peak times. If I download between 4pm and midnight my speed is shit but outside of those hours it flies.

I entered that address. And it asked me for a password/username. Does it mean i have a encryption setting? I did do a password once,I think, it's written down somewhere  :?

There will be a default one. Probably admin/admin. Unless you changed it? Can't help you there I'm afraid. Read your instructions if you're unsure.
