Title: FM2005
Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, September 4, 2005, 13:57:49
I've spent all afternoon reinstalling it, re-patching it, downloading the new update, editing our loans in and generally pissing about sorting it out.

now I can't be arsed to play it.

Any tips on formation? 8)

4-4-2 with diamond formation in midfield works nicely for me, home or away. Just make sure you buy a ball winning DMC :D

Ah but You might jest but 4-5-1 or 5-4-1 are two of the best formations you can use. I used this formation and won promotion to the premiership with Swindon and then went on to win the premiership and champions league with it. It's a great formation, you're one striker will score 35 goals a season.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v367/2hats/formation.jpg[url]

Most important thing is which players you buy though, Kenny Lunt and Kyle Lapham are class.

Nah not quite, that was the team I started with in my first premiership season which was mid table.

This is my premiership winning squad. Rhys did play 11 games but mainly in cups.

My PC is good but runs FM really slow, my laptop is much crapper but runs it faster but still slow. Id like to download the update patches and what not, but I would need to use my old 56k connection to the laptop, to patch it and update it and edit it, your looking at about 4 days!!!

That would be cool.....note I wouldnt just need the update, I'd need all the patches as well. As I havent patched the game once.

If your in Divvy 2 Steve Simonson of Stoke is a good buy, wont cost much either....also Bulman isnt too bad!

Well only Rhys, I tend to change the squad completely after the first couple of seasons just bring in a whole new team on free transfers and release most of the old ones but Sean O'Hanlon and Kyle Lapham stayed for a few years.

Sonic out! :x A 3-0 home defeat is unacceptable and your players are undisciplined with that many red cards. They need to be sent to an army training camp to kick them into shape. This would never of happened under Lou Macari.

innit 8)

Whalley and Stef are my two best players by far, averaging 7.68 and 7.67 after 27 games, they're absolutely superb.

Salako and Summerbee on the wings pinging in the crosses, Fallon's scored 13  goals in 19 starts, Thorpe's got 9 in 12, Cureton's got 9 in 10 and Roberts has got 5 in 15. I'm rotating my strikers too much though.

Tom Heaton is ace in goal 8)

I'm 9th, had a really poor run following that Huddersfield game :(

What formation did you go for in the end?

Just updated mine and started from scratch - 3-5-2

Heaton
Ifil - collins - ohanlon
shakes migz pook whalley nicolau
cureton heath

So far won 3 friendlies, all away

4-0
6-0
3-2

2 more friendlies then start the season - cureton and heath both on fire

Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, September 6, 2005, 22:42:32
I went 4-4-2 with a few tweaks. I'll upload it in a sec.

Pretty basic, two central midfielders (Whalley and Miglioranzi) sitting a little deeper than the two wingers, who stayed strictly out wide (Salako is a good signing on a free) and Curo bagged 23 goals, Fallon got 22 and I finished 9th after a poor run in March and April :/

Tip with corners. Leave 2 defenders back. Put your best finisher/long shots player outside area/edge of area. Then put everyone else on far post (standing). Tell your corner taker to cross to penalty area. Nicked it from somewhere else but works quite well for scoring from corners.

Ok here goes. Open FM and load your last game. Once loaded open 'my computer'. You will need to show hidden files and folders so do this from the tools>folder options>'view' tab. Now to delete those files...

Go to your c drive. OPen documents and settings. Open the folder that applies to your user name. Then open the local settings folder. Within this is a temp folder - open that then you will see the football manager 2005 folder. Open this to get to the files.

There will be loads in there! Easiest thing to do is to go to the view menu and sort by file type. Delete all the 'pkf' files e.g. ms191.pkf. Once removed from your pc, save your game in fm2005 and then exit. Next time you load it should load/run a little faster. You will have to keep doing this periodically.

Hope all that makes sense! Worked better in cm4 but still improves speed in fm imo.

Who you playing in defence? I concede quite a few (had two 3-3 draws in a row, how King-esque) but I find Nicholas - Ifil - O'Hanlon - Smith quite a solid defence.

Comyn-Platt isn't bad either.

I'm in the prem and have basically the regen players (because i'm in 2010 or something). I will start again, but i just can't seem to win the prem league. I've won everything else loads. What's everyone's closing down/marking settings etc...

Title: FM2005
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 13:50:22
Put a sweeper behind them.

When I won the premiership I only conceded 4 goals at home all year, but with a 4-4-2 I was conceding about 3 or 4 a game, just wasn't working in the premiership.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v367/2hats/premtable.jpg

Title: FM2005
Post by: Simon Pieman on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 13:55:33
so would 3 at the back with a sweeper work better than flat 4? I was going to try this but then my full backs would surely have to play a lot narrower. Guess i should experiment and watch a few full-match highlights. Once i have tweaked my defence i should have everything perfect i think

Title: FM2005
Post by: Titch on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 13:58:34
I always play a 5-3-2 formation.  I find it by far the most solid/balanced formation.

Title: FM2005
Post by: Kinky Tom on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:04:36
I always tend to go for a flat 4-4-2, wingers pushing on, one CM staying back a bit, and one getting forward.

I sometimes change to a 4-1-4-1 to see a game out, and often nick another goal playing this way.  The extra man in midfield sits just in front of the back four - and the one CM that was inclined to sit back now just sits in CM, with the other three midfielders getting forward to support the lone striker.

I find that FM is not so suited to obscure formations like CM was.

I tend to have decent defences, so I must be doing something right.

Title: FM2005
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 14:06:26
Well I used a kind of 1-4-4-1, I guess you could say it is a negative tactic but I was leaking so many goals it was getting ridiculous.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v367/2hats/formation.jpg

Not with those players though, you need to have a decent sweeper to get the best out of it, I had Gabriel Milito and the two wingers playing  like Robben and Duff or Wright-Phillips and Cole do for Chelsea, I had Antonio Di Natale who was the star player and Steed Malbranque with just one class striker (Fabrizio Miccoli for me).

Title: FM2005

Over the summer I sold Roberts to Torquay (£12k), Jenkins to Leyton Orient (£3k), Thorpe to Belenenses (free) and released Lee Briscoe and Ben Wells. I've signed Malvin Kamara (free), Tom Heaton (£120k), Anders Ekelund (£8k), Andy Smith (£10k) and Paul Furlong (£1k). I've just tried to strengthen the squad this summer, if I don't get promoted and my wage bill gets cut again I'm going to resign  :x

You really should be getting out of League 1 at the first attempt though.  See if you can sign Junior (the striker - he's ace in L1), and if you have a database big enough see if you can find a guy called Gabor (I think) Korolovszky - he was very good (CB).

This season we had 7 points after 5 games and still people wanted King out, I dunno how you've survived.

In championship manager 4 I got Swindon promoted twice in a row then got sacked after 10 games in the premiership when I was bottom by a couple of points. Very harsh.

Just sorted my tactics  :P  Changed centre backs to tight marking (man) and rest are on zonal. Changed full backs and wide men to play through balls often as well. Not only am I scoring an average of 4 a game, I've only conceded 5 goals in about 15 games  :D

Would upload the tactic, but not on my pc at the moment and dial up

with past incarnations of CM, i've always used other peoples tactics (not diablo though) because i couldn't be arsed with making my own, i'd look for cheap world class players on forums etc. i've assembled my squad without any outside help, it's so much more fulfilling :d

my title with Betis was the most satisfying, i beat real madrid and barca, with a smaller squad! i did spend £52m on one player though  :| but he did score 26 league goals in 6 months. so was worth it in my eyes!

yea, £37m up front and £15m over 2 seasons, still paying it off. i bought him from Espanyol (my old club) i'd signed him when i was there for £18m, and he was a class act, runs well, dribbles well, finishing is superb, and at the age of 23 is now the first choice spain striker. he linked up well with my other striker i got in last year, from Atalanta, he was the european golden boot winner, he got 23 all season, none too shabby, considering he still doesnt speak spanish, a year and a bit after i signed him!!!

£52m is over double the highest price i've ever paid for a player. its just this kid is fucking magic, the season i got him, he scored 26 goals, and we won the league. the season i bought him at Espanyol (for £18m) he scored 21 goals, and he was 22 years old!!!

i dont like to buy players for huge amounts of money. i enjoy bringing players up through the ranks, not spending shitloads of money on other peoples projects. but i uncovered this guy, just i got the sack 14months after doing so, and felt he was exactly what i needed to complete my strikeforce for betis.

There's an option that saves versions of each game each time it autosaves. So you can go back to the save before last. In other words it doesn't save over the game, but create a new copy of it. Therefore you only lose a month and not an entire season or 11
