Can only think they've misheard Cumberland. There is a Sunderland in north Cumbria, however its a hamlet, assume someone has depended a little too much on google maps!

Back in the day before the internet when we used to go on holidays during the football season, the only real way of knowing how Swindon had got on was to look in the Sunday English papers (which weren't available until the Monday usually). I remember the excited rush to the shop to scan our result and any match report. If we won, I usually stopped in the shop and would read each of our match reports. I sound like a tightwad, but I would have been 12-16ish and would have better things to spend my foreign money on!

I did this most weeks in France from 1983-199something... I wasn't going to buy a whole Sunday paper at a hugely inflated price for what was often only one line in the sports pages. But when I got the chance, I could easily spend two hours poring over the results page - tables, scorers, attendances for every team in the league. Could barely tell you one name from most teams' squads these days.

haha - I was exactly the same actually. Even down to the Scottish results as well (I think I was fascinated by the low attendances). We are spoiled these days with the internet aren't we?

Love this idea from Thailand - tourists at a national park have to register with their names and addresses, if they leave any litter, the park rangers post it back to them. Hopefully with a fine as well https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-54200833

It's expats that will often set up teams of people to clean up beaches and what not. Attitudes may be shifting, though.
