What have they done to upset you? If we have nearly double the number they have at Wembley then so be it.

Agree with 69er on this one, I looked at their forum a few days back and they said they would outsell us and a thread about hating the mighty one due to his Wednesday connections.

I'm wondering if the same person has opened 2 (or more) accounts.

I like Chesterfield.  I loved their cup run years back - could so easily have been in the FA Cup final.  I loved Saltergate - a proper dump of a ground in the old school way.

That was brilliant - the last time I actually took any interest in the FA Cup - until this year.

Slept in the cop shop that night as we'd drunk all our money. One of our lot threw up all over the floor. The cops were alright up there.

Saltergate was ace. Loved it when the bloke in the wheelchair did a pitch invasion and got a clip round the ear from his helper. Might have been during their last match before the stadium move.

Quote

I had to drive up from London that evening – terrible traffic on the A1, well behind schedule to get there for kick-off. Couldn’t believe it when the radio announced the delay. Got there 30 mins late just about when the pp was announced, and Lou came over and said the club would pay for returning coaches Sat morning.

I had family in Nottingham so was staying over anyway. I’d always had a soft spot for C’field as a counter to the local arrogance of Forest / Derby / the 2 Sheffs which was always stuffed down my throat on family visits. As a lad, being taken for a treat to see a game there and having to stand on that Saltergate terrace in the middle of winter with the wind blowing off the Peak District was the coldest place I’ve ever watched football (except for Oldham).

Leeds are the most hated team in Yorkshire, biggest club, horrible fans etc etc, I work with a few Leeds, Wednesday, United fans. I have a good mate who supports Chesterfield, their arch rivals are Mansfield.

By the way Chesterfield to Wembley isn't as far away as people think, timewise there isn't much difference really, I've done that journey before and it's not bad atall, I'm not keying this in as a factor for their support which I feel is lower than it should be, my mate has these sentiments too.

To be fair I don;t think distance matters too much with these occasions. If the final was at Old Trafford i'd travel up there to watch us in a final and i'm sure many others would too. Loads of fans want to see their team on the big stage. Distance isn't really factored in.

Yes it is....if it was up North Chesterfield would probably sell 5000 more....and maybe us 5000 less.

Chesterfield -> Wembley Stadium Distance: 119.1 miles Time: 2 hr 17 mins
Swindon -> Wembley Stadium:  79.2 miles Time: 1 hr 48 min

Not a massive difference, 1/2 hour.

Chesterfield -> Old Trafford 80.2 miles Time: 1 hr 35 min

Whereas:

Swindon -> Old Trafford 160.6 miles Time: 3 hr 10 min

All give and take, based on AA Route planner.

I think hertha only grumbles at our "extras" but probably doesn't consider every single other club would be just the same on a Wembley visit. Bigger clubs have more extras/armchair fans.

Title: Re: wanky chesterfield
Post by: herthab on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, 14:37:25
Of course every club has got extras who will turn up for a Wembley appearance, that's pretty much my point. The OP having a dig at Chesterfield because they've got less "Extras" than us is pretty pathetic, in fact the whole "Our club's bigger because it's got more fans" argument is cringeworthy.

That would make Bradford the biggest team in League 2.

Evening all,
Okay, so a valid question which is no doubt on many of your lips, or fingers as it were is, “why would a fan of a different team bother to set up an account on here and post a reply to a thread about his team?” Well, you're right, I probably should be out living my life but I'm ill at the minute, so that's my excuse haha.
Anyway chaps, I am indeed a Chesterfield fan and I've read this thread with interest, especially all the Saltergate memories. I'm only 26 myself so I'm sure it hit many of our fans harder than me, but I grew up with that place and though it was one of the worst grounds in the country in many ways, it was 100% our dump! Loved it, even the outside bogs!
If any of you have had the misfortune of popping on our message board, you will no doubt have already witnessed a bit of bragging and chest pumping from some members. We're not all like that you know. I reckon the general consensus amongst my fellow Spireites is that you guys will give us a pasting, and for some reason many of us seem to be alright with that. Tis undeniably hard to get overly excited when our league position is so pish poor...but it'll be a grand day I'm sure, as long as you don't tank us. Many Spireites seem to be in the strange position of bargaining with some higher being...we'll give up the trophy if we can stay up instead. Not sure how that works, but I think goes some of the way to explaining why we're not taking quite as many fans as we expected. I admit it, I'm not going as I cannot afford a Wembley trip and the next game at Sheff Utd as well and, living in Sheffield, I stumped for the easier option. Besides, I saw us get thumped by Charlton away earlier in the year so I'm in no rush to watch us lose in London again haha.
Right enough nattering, I should probably go and medicate myself rather than cluttering up your board. Fingers crossed it's a good game (my prediction by the way is a win on penalties for us...I might be ever so slightly wrong).
Hope you're all good!

I don't really post on other teams boards but I've got a couple of accounts, don't really see the problem, we're all there to talk football and usually sign up some time around the fixture. No need to justify yourself here matey.

I think we're all reasonably confident heading into this game, perhaps not to the point of referring to you as "wanky Chesterfield"! I think we'll win, I don't think it'll be a pasting though!

I am very much a fan of traditional old grounds, although our south stand was erected in about 1995 I always have had a soft spot for the Shrivingham Road terrace with it's metal roof and abandoned wooden seats. There was a thread on here a couple of months ago that had a link to a website that had a lot of old photos of grounds as they used to look. Although it's more "comfy" nowadays I actually used to like standing on an old concrete terrace with the wind cutting me in half whilst eating some rank food, it was an escape from a cosy lifestyle I guess  :) . There was always a buzz from jumping around like a kid at Christmas when your team scored; favourite games for that were the 4-0 win at Bristol City in 91 and the game at Burnden Park in 95 (and obviously the games at Oxford when we won). Plus if you had some annoying twat stood near you or somebody with a stinky arse , it was easy to move to a different part of the terrace :)
