I'm upset that tonight's efforts on this thread ran out of steam. I was enjoying it immensely.

Apparently one of the candidates has withdraw his application and is chasing a job in the championship instead (BBC RS).

Nothing so useful as to who it is, but I bet it's Dowie!

Swindon Town chairman Andrew Fitton admits that time could be against him in his bid to make a managerial appointment before embarking on a business trip to America next week.

The Town chief has been given permission to speak to four candidates after making official approaches and held interviews at a secret location yesterday.

However, Fitton admitted last night that things have had to be 'shuffled around' after he was unable to meet with one of the candidates. He is still hoping to arrange an interview with that man before the end of the week.

The situation is also complicated by the fact that all of the candidates are currently in employment meaning that, once a final decision has been made by the Town board, terms will have to be agreed with the man in question and compensation would also need to be thrashed out with his club.

Fitton said last night: "I don't want to rule out making an appointment before the end of the week. We have been given permission to speak to all the candidates by their clubs and the process is fast approaching an end game.

"These people are all still in work so once we have made a decision on the right man there would have to be some negotiating done with the club of whoever we are going to appoint.

"It is hard to say how many days it would take to finalise the details with the other club and we have also had to shuffle things around slightly because we were unable to see all the candidates on Wednesday.

"We are going to see somebody else before the end of the week and then we will be in a position to move things forward at some speed."
