Post by: SuggWillSugg MBE on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 03:56:11
Just got in, pretty smashed.
My alarm goes off in roughly 3 hours time.

Tomorrow will be a good day!

Big Big game, Paolo will get them fired up and a win is coming our way!

COYR.

We will nick a 2-1 win in a tight game, if it's on. It's cold with a very heavy frost here.

Title: Re: Southend Vs Swindon - Official matchday thread.
Post by: suttonred on Tuesday, January 31, 2012, 07:45:24
Yeah i'm wondering if it will be on. Very heavy frost here, and it's way colder normally in Southend.  Going to be very cold for watching and playing if on, but it always is when we play there. Just for once i'd like an August or April game there, it's always in the middle of winter for some reason.

MASSIVE game. 2-0 to them, Benyon and Timlin.

Think its all going to go horribly wrong today on the transfer front and tonight at Southend. Depressing 2-0 defeat with a lack of creativity and ability to put the ball in the back of the net.

Beating them 3 times in a season may prove too much. Imagine Benyon must be nailed on to score knowing our luck.

2-1 defeat.

1-1 draw, Da Vita.

Quite happy with a point, and more importantly no major departures.

Well we managed to beat them when Timlin couldn't play and now he can sooooo I'm going for a tidy 0 - 4 Scoreline and us to go 2nd in the league.

I will be completely dejected if we lose, happy enough with a draw and over the moon with a win and all 3 points.  The latter scenario would almost certainly involve bringing a slightly early finish to No Beer January - just by a couple of hours.

I think we'll lose, possibly without scoring (our finishing has been fairly poor all season, so it'd be typical for it to continue when it matters!). But we'll beat Crawley and Cheltenham at home, so we'll still be there or thereabouts...

Presuming it's on, they do have a worrying amount of our old boys.

1-1 draw I suspect.

Old Boys to get the better of us. Think we might be tired after Saturday's effort at Leicester.

0-3. Sturrock, Benyon, Timlin

I'm allowed to go to this one! I just hope Ritchie's on that coach because we need him more than the cash as the moment.

As we've beaten them twice already, they have lots of ex Town players and Flint is out, I can't see us making it a hat-trick of wins tonight. 2-1 defeat or 1-1 at best. Hope I'm wrong.

Is the fact that we have a match tonight going to aid us, hinder us being able to buy players etc?

What happens with medicals if our physio is in Southend for example?

Physio doesn't normally do medicals, usually get the club doctor in to do that!!  This is going to be a tough one tonight, they will be fresher than us, got a bad feeling about it but will be happy if we are undefeated, take a 0-0.

I'm going to this so hope the weather doesn't mean it is called off.  Think it will be a close game and there will certainly be some nerves as it is so important.  We will however just sneak it 1-0 COYR

As most are saying, I think a draw would be a good result for us tonight. Need the strikers to convert some chances to take the pressure off at the back.

For the first time in a while I am worried/pessimistic about our performance tonight.

Fully expect us to win this game.

We have beaten them twice this season already.

Only stumbling block i can see is the exertions of Saturday may impact out fitness levels come the end of the game.

3-1 Swindon.

He will not be a part of the squad to take on Southend United this evening, but could feature this weekend with Burton Albion the visitors to Swindon in League 2.

I suppose there is room for a little squad rotation - Magera, Kennedy, Murray and Bodin should all be well rested.

Any news on Simon Ferry's fitness after the tackle on Saturday?

If we get a bid of over a million then I think Wray should take it. We dont buy players for £300k just so they can run out their contracts.

We need to take each individual bid as it comes. Its got nothing to do with Greer or Austin or any of that. For wingers, weve got Rooney, Gabillondo, Esejas, Bodin and De Vita (I suppose).

Id rate Ritchies value at about £650k. But you cant buy the partnership hes got with Caddis on the right hand side, and for that reason I dont think we should let go for £1.1 million. But surely Bournemouth cant afford that?!

Disappointed to see Ferry missing, although I guess it's from the knock he picked up against Leicester. Also, Connell was pretty much anonymous on Saturday, so nice to see Murray get a chance at a place he's already scored at this season. Need BIG performances from Risser, Devera and Kennedy if we're going to get anything tonight, mistakes could be catastrophic.

Think it's just the players playing, in no particular order. Expect them to line up as Morris, Clohessy, Barker, Baldwin, Gilbert, Hall, Kalala, Timlin, Sampson, Dickinson. Reckon we'll see Tims on the left.

That settles it, the radio is not going on.  I can't take the risk.  Unfortunately that means I'll be hovering around the house like a bag of nerves reliant on updates from here.  It's going to be a long hour and a half.  If I have to do what I've been doing for the last 20 minutes, I've also got to sit with a towel on my head for the next hour and a half!  The next dilemma.

We need another bloody goal to be sure.  Remember Roots Hall in 2010 when they scored twice in the last 5 minutes to make it 2-2?

I've been sitting up in a darkened bedroom, waiting for my youngest to drop off to sleep (a nightly ritual these days) following this thread on the BlackBerry.  Now downstairs again where I can post.  Don't tell his mother, but at 2-0 I got the little fella out of his bed to do a 'Come on You Reds' (but quietly).  He's only two and doesn't understand shit about football, but I know he'd he happy to hear about the 3rd goal.

Oh my days.  I don't know what was worse, torturing myself for the last 20 minutes or so trying to second guess the score while I made lunches and did other random things, or ploughing my way through the last 9 pages determined to read it all in order!

At this rate, I won't be dring my hair until around 10.00pm.  There's no way I'm taking the towel off my head now!

In my inferior mind I had this down as a definite defeat.  I still think of us as old Swindon (even in good form we'd lose a night game at a place like Southend)

This is Paolo Di Canio's Swindon. Outsiders read his comments and think 'nutjob' but this guy is proving his credentials week in, week out.

Stayaways who are reading this forum... COME BACK AND ENJOY THIS! Nobody will judge you for coming back .x.

Good result but nothing less then expected.  Predicted 3-1 earlier on and thought the only thing that would beat us was fatigue.

Not being cocky but would be disapointed if we didnt win the league from this position.  We have a good squad for this division.  I mean Ferry didnt start today, likewise De Vita but the other players fittied in well.

Would be surpised if between now and the end of the season we lose more then 2-3 more games

Paolo:
- Best performance of season because of recovery from energy drain following effort against Leicester
- Worked hard off ball
- Players have belief at the moment and are very together
- Fans were amazing
- V important victory taking points off team at the top
- Victory dedicated to him Mum
- Changed tactics tonight and told players to start quick rather than keep it tight. Paolo wanted to take risk based upon Southend's team make up. Wanted to stretch game.
- Deserved to win probably 6-1 vice 4-1
- Sends a message to other teams
- Memorable 1st goal for Swindon.
- Bodin played his part.
- Talked to 3 players who were watching in the stands that their time will come. If they work hard they will get their chance. Talked about J Smith maybe being surprised that he was playing. Was left out because of not doing what Paolo wanted. Has worked hard and listened in training, hence getting his chance
Transfer deadline day:
- Talked about the fact he wanted Ritchie to stay no matter what
- Would have liked to have had another striker as another option, but doesn't 'need' it and is happy that he has enough to take the Town up

Although in the real world that was absolutely woeful. We did nothing first half, defence was terrible and we created nothing. Swindon look leagues above us.

Quote
Summary from all of us there:

We were were showed up to be what we have been for a lot of the season, average and were beaten by a team with more quality and the best in the league by miles.

Quote
Swindon were far superior to us, moved for each other, passed the ball quickly and directly and wanted this win.

Quote
I don't think its time to panic yet Swindon looked a different class to eveyone else we've played this season.

Quote
Sturrock 2. Sorry Luggy but the best motivation you can give a team, is to say they are not the best in the league. On this showing I think Swindon are the best in the league and will take some stopping.

I'm absolutely fucking ecstatic. The comments from di Canio, the Southend fans and being in the auto places makes me feel fucking great and super confident.

I've no doubt this team with this management and the mentality he's instilled would batter the league above. I don't want this to end.

This setup has so much potential and I haven't felt this good about Swindon possibly ever. Let's keep shit together for at least a decade, because we're on the verge of something very special and I'm convinced more than a few could become the stuff of legend.

As I said in another thread, well hats off to everyone at the club. The change from top to bottom from a short space of time has been fantastic.

We're a different club, we've got our balls back. We dont give up and give in on or off the field. We work hard, we grit our teeth and we just get on longer, harder, faster and stronger than everyone else because thats what we fucking do.

Good times.

Title: Re: Southend Vs Swindon - Official matchday thread.

Wasn't really sure whether to go or not tonight after shelling out for Leicester, but decided late on that I'd go and boy was that the right decision!

It really was a good game of football, action packed throughout. We started very well - Murray jinking inside and crashing a great shot off the post, before Ritchie arrived from the other flank to hit a strong shot into the bottomw corner. What a start! Then just minutes later we made the most of a set piece, with a cracking ball to the back post knocked down into a crowd of players, with Smith on hand to turn it home.

Then it went quiet. The game slowed a bit and Southend showed a bit more class, creatign a few opportunities. In the end, though, they got back into it with a goal out of nothing - a shot swept towards the bottom corner from distance somehow get round Foderingham and went in off the post. But not to worry, as Town went straight back on the attack. Our balls into the box all night were superb, particularly from set pieces, and Devera rose unmarked to head home and make it 3-1. The only regret was that the shot which won the corner didn't go in - an incredible overhead kick from Benson which was tipped over by the keeper.

An unbelievable scoreline at half time. Second half we didn't create the same number of chances, but Bodin took his goal well, being in the right place at the right time to knock home after Ritchie's cross was poorly pushed away by the keeper. And Bodin kept threatening - late on he made a burst towards the area, chipping across goal for benson who should probably have made it 5 on the volley, but he blasted it narrowly over.

All in all a strong showing from Town. Southend were good in spells, but really did fall apart at the back at times, with Murray, Benson and Bodin all getting into dangerous positions, often from simple balls. I can't really fault anybody tonight - just thought the whole team played very well against a physical Southend side who have some good players.

Great celebrations at the end, with Paolo bringing the whole team over before taking his position facing them to applaud them for their efforts. Those who say he's an attention-seeker and that it's all about him really do have no idea.

Oh, and although the crowd wasn't particularly huge tonight, fair play to those home fans who kept singing at 4-1 down! A credit to their club.

A few more quotes to enjoy. Forgive me if I've repeated any that were already mentioned!

Quote
Give Swindon some credit, their midfield in particualr were excellent, Benson played the targetman role extremely well. Sad to say Alan McCormack was probably the best defender on the pitch tonight. Remarkable transformation. Will be a very good team that finishes above them.

Quote
Swindon are going up as Champions and its between us creepy and Cheltenham who joins them. Swindon never really had to get out of third gear and the only time they stepped up was when we pulled it back to 2.1

Quote
Full credit to Swindon. They oozed class for this level and were obviously so well drilled. The look like a Di Canio side, not afraid to try things, inventive and free. They also weren't afraid of a little play acting when they wanted to but they're the best side in this league and i''ll think they'll win it with games to spare.

Quote
Swindon, best team I've seen all season and on that showing will win the league.

Well I'm glad I went to that one !

Booked today off work which was wise considering we didn't get home till 12:45 am.

Thought Benson was superb last night. Worked his ass off and seemed to win everything in the air when balls were played forward to him.

McCormack looks like he's been a centre back all his life. Cleans up nicely and covered Devera virtually everytime.

Gotta say i'm very impressed with Rooney. He caused all sorts of problems for their right back.

Oh and a special mention to Liam Dickinson. This guy doesn't even look like a footballer. He has the touch of a rapist and why Southend fans rate him I don't know.

Anyone else think Timlin should have been sent off ? The ref bottled it.

Fantastic performance. Benson was superb- exactly what we have been looking for. As good as we were with the ball, the thing that impressed me most was our work ethic off the ball. The only time we sat off them was the period when they scored. Special mention from me to the fella that gave me his spare ticket and wouldn't take any money for it. He had 'Kent Red' on the back of his shirt so if you know him, or it's one of you, a huge thanks again. A true gent.

I don't think we will act too quickly, and it will be dependent on other players going out on loan first.

The man also seems to be a magnet for bad tackles and clashes of heads, I'm not quite sure whether he just makes the most of things or he attracts them yet.

The other thing I noticed about Risser last night is that the moment the first goal went in, he didn't charge off celebrating and went straight over to PDC for instructions. I suspect that may be part of the reason PDC likes him.

On Betfair we are now marginal favourites over Crawley (We are 2.92, they are 3). With the bookies (in this case Will Hill)

Crawley - 5/4
Swindon - 15/8
Shrews/Southend - 7/1
Cheltenham - 8/1
Torquay - 33/1

And he has deserved it with his recent performances. It will be interesting to see how Paolo integrates Cox into the midfield, if he settles in quickly it will at least enable us to rotate the four of them during this period of heavily congested fixtures.

From listening to the wireless last night it sounded like everyone, management, players & fans done the club proud last night.  Special mention to those that went to Roots Hall last night, you sounded very impressive coming through on the airwaves.

I was gutted that I didnt make the trip last night but I was fucking delighted with that massive result.  What pleases me most is the strength in depth that we now have.  As someone mentioned earlier, the fact that we have the likes of Bodin, Ferry & RDV coming off the bench is very impressive.

Sturrock's viewpoint

http://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/blues/9504190.Sturrock_fumes_at_Swindon_defeat/r/?ref=rss

Quote
“That was the poorest performance I’ve been involved with here since coming to the football club,’ said Sturrock.

“We were slow, sluggish and lethargic and you just can’t afford to be like that against a team like Swindon.

“They’ve been playing Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday while we’ve had a bit of rest but it was hard to tell which team was supposed to be fresh out there.

“We were poor at the back and gave away some bad goals. The midfield was chasing shadows and the front two didn’t do their jobs so we were poor all over.

“I’d also like to think the goalkeeper would hold his hands up for a couple of the goals and we now need a reaction when we go to Plymouth this weekend.”

So apart from the keeper, defence, midfield and forwards they were OK.

Brilliant night,

Foderingham was as solid as ever
Kennedy was kind of at fault for the goal shanking a chance to clear, but apart from that his distribution was quality and didn't put a foot wrong
Devera is massively improved in recent weeks and played well
Ritchie, McCormick and Caddis, top class performances which we have come to expect
Smith did well, won tackles where needed
Murray, did well until taken off but right sub to make
Benson, won every header, possibly best performance so far in a red shirt
Rooney, massive signing for us, brilliant player

Billy Bodin's touch and his feet are unbelievable, so glad we didn't let him go, took his chance well, as easy as it was.

The one I was most surprised with was Risser, I have been one of his biggest critics, while I don't get on his back as I can see he's trying and it's the wrong thing to do, i felt like he has been shite for large parts of this season. He was class last night and I felt pleased for him when the fans chanted his name as he was taken off, he seemed chuffed.

So nice to hear Risser's name getting chanted. He must be so chuffed with that, and rightly so, given the amount of stick he's been having. Glad to hear he played well again, third game in a row. (Although different interpretations have been made even in his last 3 games)

Can I get more on Rooney?

great night, i love roots hall.

foderingham - solid, a couple of miscommunications with back 4 but very good all round display, didnt stand a chance with goal.

back 4 - all very very good against a masiive southend forward line in typical sturrock style, peppering crosses and long balls all night, devera was excellent and him and mccormack looked very assured.

midfield - risser and smith were both brilliantly physical, ritchie was a constant threat and rooney hustled and bustled but looked the worse of the 4, he wasnt bad or anything just the other 3 were ace, he will def come good and the corners he took were ace.

benson was brilliant, won everything and the ball stuck to him, him and murray in the 1st half were superb, both very intelligent players, murray was so unlucky hitting the post, bodin was also excellent, the chance to set up benson was a sublime bit of skill by billy, he is going to become a fantastic player for us.

southend defensively were a joke, the goalie was like a shit talia, timlin should have been sent off twice. timlin going was good as he is not good enough to get on our benchy let alone our first team.

di canio is mental.

good support too.

A few random thoughts on last night.

Apart from a slightly dodgy clearance that lead to their goal, a beauty of a hit by the way, that was the strongest defensive performance I have seen from Kennedy.  I think he had been told to keep an eye on Ryan Hall who by all accounts has had a very good season on the right side of their midfield.  Well Kennedy had him in his pocket for most of the match, he had more of defensive mentality last night but it paid dividends.

Benson was immense, everytime the ball went into to him it stuck and he laid it off accordingly.  He worked his socks off, great movement and deserved either the overhead in the first half or volley late on to go in.  He has joined Ferry, Ritchie, Caddis, etc as the most important players in our team.

First ive seen of Bodin since he returned from Torquay and he looks a different player, superb close control and has developed the confidence to successfully pull off nice flicks.  The role just behind Benson worked quite well.

That performance/result is made all the better by the fact that Southend generally didn’t play that badly I thought, yea the defence looked shaky at time but by the time they conceded the 2nd they had to commit more to an attacking state of mind.

I still can’t work out how they didn’t have a man sent off, Timlin in particular, i lost count of the amount of reckless challenges especially in the last 10 mins.

Most satisfying away game I’ve seen since Saints a couple of years ago.

Yeah I noticed that-nice touch, but he was always the first to acknowledge the fans when he was with us.Our back line was superb last night especially McCormack-MOTM for me.A centre half with power AND the ability to play the ball from the back.Great performances from everyone apart from Rooney who was just good!Bodin's performance more than justified Di Canio's faith in him, great skill to produce the cross from which Benson almost made it 5.Kennedy's 45 yard ball to Ritchie just before Bodin's goal was the pass of the night. All told a cracking night but oh what a poor set of home fans!

I see Sturrock has said that was the worst Southend performance he's seen since he's been in charge.

Well,we've done some sort of double, as when we won 2-0 at the CG, he was saying similar things saying that a number of players have played her last games for him, after their abject performance.

This is a nice article about the game.  I especially like the complimentary comments about us.

'The answer in short, is that Swindon Town really are "that good!" and should be feared by all who play them this season. They came here with spirit, determination and a certain willingness to bleed if necessary for the cause. That Swindon team is a credit to Paolo Di Canio and he should rightly be proud of them for their attitude towards the game... they did a thoroughly professional job on us and seemed to enjoy making us look distinctly ordinary, which we certainly are not!'

He's a clear talent, even if that takes a couple of years to develop, and like his dad he's devoted to the club and wants to do well for Swindon.

He's only 19, it's easy to forget. Would be a mistake to shift him on unless we really really have to imo...

His skill in tight areas with the ball under his feet is very impressive for this level. With a bit more experience he could be a dangerous player, particularly playing off a striker like Benson or Connell who hold the ball up well.
