Title: Colchester United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Saturday, November 16, 2013, 00:00:03
The Opponent: Colchester United

Nevermind the football, let’s have more of Jezza and, err, Muzza.  In fact, if either would be good enough to offer their score prediction for today’s encounter I am sure it will be a TEF first. I’m sure Jezza said he would straighten the story out a bit one day and it would seem he has done that. One thing that has not changed since his departure is the gratitude the supporters of Swindon Town owe to him and the other members of the consortium. Transparency on such a scale had never been seen before at the club, and is not likely to do so for the foreseeable future. If I was a man of wealth (4 houses, 4 cars, 2 motorbikes and £1m turnover company doesn’t count), I would happily let Mr Wray spend my cash if it meant anything like The Di Canio rollercoaster that we rode just a short time ago. The contributions from Jeremy, Steve and everyone on here this evening display all of the positives of a forum such as this, and long may it continue, I'm actually glad I didn't make it to the pub this evening.

From memory, this has to be the coldest and most soul less of all the new build grounds I have been too. My last visit was an FA Cup tie I believe, Matt Ritchie scoring the only goal of the game and celebrating in front of the frozen 500 odd that made the long journey to Essex. There was not a pub for miles if memory serves, parking was rubbish and the stewards all reminded me of Phil Mitchell wannabes. Colchester itself had very little to offer on the way home apart from the road out, which seemed to go on forever. I hate to think how I would recall the place had we lost that cold day. Apart from a military prison, Blur, all round prick Darren Day and Dermot O’Leary there really isn’t a great deal to say about the place. Colchester is said to be the oldest recorded town in Britain and even served as the provincial capital of Roman Britain. Back in 2004, an exploration team found the remains of a chariot race track underneath a Colchester garrison, the only ever find of its kind in The UK to this day. The chav population of this particular part of Essex is rather less than that of Basildon and Romford, with just 1 chav in every 4 Colcestrians.

Where the opposition gather –  Do they have any fans?

http://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/colchesterunited

Last 6 – LDLDWD (14th on 19 points)

They have served us both –  Jamie Cureton, Tony Thorpe, Michael Rose, David Prutton, Roy Bicknoll, Ian Culverhouse, Lloyd Opara, Ray Bunkell, Will Dixon, Johnnie Jackson

The Odds – Colchester 5/2  Draw 12/5 Swindon 11/10  Have they not seen our away form? First goalscorer odds open up a bit without Ranger, Nicky Ajose is a best priced 13/2 with Bet 365.

The Son Says – He has decided watching Swindon is more fun than England, A good decision at the ripe old age of 8. 2-1 Town.

The Prediction –  I think this will be a tough one. The bookies seem confident that 3 points is on the cards for us but will it really be that easy? 3-0 away win with goals from Ajose, Luongo and Byrne in front of 4’110, 422 making the long journey.

And Finally – Since 2006, Colchester has been one of only 12 places in the UK where Royal Salutes are fired to mark Royal anniversaries and visits by foreign heads of state. From 2009, these salutes have taken place in Castle Park

The dismal away form to continue with a 4-0 drubbing.

As a stay at home fan suffering just as much as those sad saps actually going, I will be expecting some kind of recompense.

Negativity does actually work - see the Wycombe thread

I would be happy to come away with a draw considering our recent away form.

On the 12.18 from Liverpool Street, can't see many town fans making the trip and frankly I don't blame them.

We don't seem to come away with much from Colchester ever.  I can't see today being any different.  Will be interesting to see if the formation changes following the last away debacle.

Haven't we won on our last two visits? 1-0 Collins, 1-0 Ritchie (FA Cup)?

Eitherway, I'm going for an evenful 0-0........

If we lose I'm hoping to have my meal break at work reimbursed.

Would be good to ground out a win, though in the circumstances, maybe a 0-0 wouldn't be the worst result. The defence could really do with a clean sheet before their confidence is totally shot.

I'm expecting us to set up to play a bit uglier today, though it's going to be more difficult to do that without Ranger to stick things to upfront. N'Guessan didn't look the answer at Macclesfield, but maybe it's best not to draw too many conclusions from that game. I'd be interested in seeing Ajose play there sometime, as I think his runs really open teams up, but maybe today's not the best day to experiment with that.

I am thinking of going to this.  I've been to Layer Road a number of times, but never yet witnessed the flatpack, out of town desolation of the new place in all of its horror.  I do need to tick it off my list.  Two hour drive from here, so I have a while to make my mind up.  Mulling it.

Who the fuck was Roy Bicknoll?  My first thought was did he prononce his name Bi-noll, like the overlooked Iron Age hill fort near Quidhampton Wood....but that is actually spelt Bincknoll....so obviously not.

It transpires, that it should be Bicknell...who apparently played 1 game as a guest player in a war time fixture of 45/46, has to be said I'd completely overlooked him til now.

I was planning to go to this today but after £550 worth of car repairs, I'm sitting at home with a cup of tea instead.

I think we'll do well today and continue our good response to the horror show at Macclesfield. 3-1 to us with a double from N'Guessan and a late strike from Ajose.

What would you have as your starting XI?

My personal choice would be..

Belford, McEveley, Hall, Ward, Bathram, Kasim, Harley, Luongo, Pritchard, N'Guessan, Ajose (4-3-3)

Tough one though, I like Byrne as a winger in 4-3-3 but I think Ajose has done enough to warrant a start..

Also, I think Cooper will opt for Byrne at right-back instead of Barthram.

Having said all of this, with only 16 available full pro's, the line-up virtually picks itself...

Did Storey say he was back fit (and back in training) on the radio the other day, or have I dreamt that?

I like Pritchard, but for a hard battle on a cold winters day at Colchester, I can see why he isn't starting.

Looks to be a line up set up to be hard to break down, lack of width may be a concern, but if it makes us harder to beat then I am all for it.

I can see a 1-1 draw.

Perhaps with that line-up, we could play the 'ugly' way? Got pace and skill (Storey & Pritchard) to come off the bench too.

Maybe we have more than 'Plan A' in that starting 11?

OK.  So you're basing the previous comment on what you read on twitter?  That's where you're going wrong.  Don't do it.  No one is ever meant to take what is written there seriously.

Twitter is nothing more than a 21st century tool devised to control the masses.  Instead of doing useful things on trains like reading books (as people used to until the 1990s), they now spend their time scrolling through inane & instantly forgettable 'micro-blogging' site comments on their phones.  It's a form of reverse progress.

323 Town fans there, good effort considering our away form, and what happened last week.

And 3,011 home fans.  You'd be really cheesed off, wouldn't you, if you went to all the trouble of building a new football ground for only 3,000 of your fans to bother turning up.

Just on train back. Very good performance and a very welcome 3 points.

Was sceptical when I saw we were  playing with none up front, but it worked a treat. We pressed well when they came into our half and we countered very well. Nice to know we have a plan B.

Ajose and  N'Guessan were brilliant, they had the beatings of both full backs all day. We were much more solid at the back, and Harley fitted in well to the midfield.

Colchester were bloody awful, and it is still a shit away day. One if the quietest grounds you will ever go to. Fair play to the town fans, 320 odd is a bloody good turnout, and we were in decent voice in the second half.

Title: Re: Colchester United v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Saturday, November 16, 2013, 17:52:27
That was far more comfortable than the score line suggests. Very slow start but once we scored there was only one team in it. It looked pretty strange without a centre forward but it worked with Ajose down the left, N'Guessen on the right and Luongo breaking through the middle.

Most of the second half frankly, we took the piss and Colchester were chasing shadows. Luongo had a good chance to put the game out of sight, Ajose (I think) had one chalked off and Pritchard should have wrapped it up near the end but tried to be too clever but overall a very convincing performance. I thought McEveley looked particularly good but no one had a bad game.

I'm really surprised to see the picture of the away support because when you were in it, it actually looked pretty good (believe it or not). Don't really see why we would all squeeze up together ???

Luongo then came painfully close to getting his second goal of the game when Walker was forced to head the ball away from the edge of his box, the Swindon man tried his luck with the chip but saw it rebound off the post.

Quote from the Colchester United O/S write up...

Really? I didn't know that. Sounds very civilized I must say. I've only rarely gone to away games by train and drove today on account of living about 20 minutes from the ground.

One thing that is grating me is how Cooper goes into every post match interview as if the interviewer is trying to catch him out with his questions, and comes across as a right mardy twat because of it.

I think he should remember that those interviews are really his only direct interaction with the fans and the interviewer is asking the questions that the fans want to hear the answers to.  Don't get me wrong, PDC was annoying for the exact opposite, but something inbetween would be nice.

If you don't want to answer a question just say "sorry I have nothing to say about that" rather than "no comment".  He is in a privileged position and his mardyness does nothing to enhance his reputation.

I know it maybe picky considering how well he is doing with the rest of his job, but like I say, it is starting to grate on me.

Got to say - that is picky.

As far as I'm concerned the manager can be anything he likes if the results are OK.

I'm easily pleased

Credit to Cooper and his coaching staff for having a rethink on the formations and getting it right.

It seems we now have 3 viable formations we can use interchangeably as suits our needs. If we get to a point where we can switch fluidly between them mid-game, that could really become a useful additional weapon in our arsenal.

I think the key is never becoming too predictable, which was the downfall of the 3-5-2.

I can't help it if it grates on me.  Don't get me wrong I don't expect him to be sweetness and light every interview, but try to sound like you are at least enjoying your job.

I think that his 'no comment' was fair enough. I think he was irritated at how his previous answers on Ranger had resulted in lots of headlines. I suspect that there have been a couple of 'discussions' about Ranger behind closed doors that aren't for public consumption. 'No comment' is probably the best answer that he could give. Those two word said a lot to me.

Title: Re:

I'd imagine he was told to answer with 'no comment'. Think the club is in damage limitation and therefore needs everything ranger related to come through one source.

Not quite Bernie - He came on the pitch at the end of the game today to acknowledge the fans and made a point of making sure all the players did the same. That's direct interaction and for me, outweighs any 'pissy-ness' in his interviews (not that I heard it today).

If I was a manager, I'm pretty sure I would get pretty pissed off and defensive with the media as well.

Maybe he's just not comfortable with the media side of things and so tends to look for "traps", whether intentional or not, in questions? God knows there's enough people happy to tear managers apart for one wrong word out of place these days.

Think you've got this bang on. There's a whole minefield there, with legal ramifications as well as impact on the player and club and anyone in his position is going to be best advised to steer well clear of commenting on it.

I agree with that and it is possible his disaster in charge at Posh has something to do with this, maybe has to realise that when you win that a positive soundbite is the way to go,rather than being negative as is the norm when you are constantly getting beat.

I think we have to be careful that we don't fall into the trap of moaning when there's actually fuck all to moan about.

Well that was a weird formation
2 frontmen on the pitch and noone playing upfront  :headhurts:

Thought was a decent performance from the whole team with Ajose shading MoM for me
N'Guessan did ok on the right wing but aint no Ranger in holding the ball up
Pritchard looked like a headless chicken when came on and missed a glorious chance to make it 3 when  instead of taking one touch round the keeper and pass into an empty net he proceeded to try to flick it over the advancing keeper.

Any criticism isnt meant to be harsh as they all did their job today and if we played that game again we could have scored 4 or 5.

Good to see my prediction was as useless as ever.  I genuinely thought we'd lose today.  Got into the car with no idea of the score and N'guessan  put us 2-0 up within a matter of seconds.  Really pleased that the team stepped up today and Cooper successfully made changes to the formation.

In terms of Cooper in interviews,  I agree with Berniman to an extent.  He does come across as being a bit defensive and abrupt.  However, he's got a long way to go before he's anyway near Messrs Malpas and Hart.

I thought Swindon were excellent today.

I was sat in with the Essex Boys, and I have to say, I never heard the Town fans once. It was the quietest away support I've ever seen.
I did my bit, I got a chant of "what a load of rubbish" going in the second half !

A post script:

The interesting thing about these comments [click here] (http://www.fansnetwork.co.uk/football/colchesterunited/forum/94595/pauls-view-vs-swindon-town/#3) on the Colchester board is that they mirror very accurately the comments on our own forums following our own recent defeats, being:

  • no width; and
  • opposition sussed us very quickly after weathering an early spell of pressure, after which it was easy to counter them...especially when it became apparent there was no Plan B.

It was, arguably, the unveiling of our own 'Plan B' (the magnificent 4-6-0 formation) that won us the game.  Good to see we're not alone in having off days where the Manager is assumed to have no back up plan after his main course of action has been second guessed by the opposition.

That part should read Twitter is nothing more than a 21st century tool for 21st century tools.
