Title: Fish and Chips
Post by: Bert Heads head on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, 17:35:31
I will be over for the Shitty game in April, and will be bringing my Spanish grand-daughter with me. Ostensibly, her trip is to learn a bit of English and see a couple of matches away from the sheer boredom of the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, I really know that the above is all lies, and her trip is just an excuse so that she can go to Swindon to eat lardy cakes and Fish and Chips.

So, where in the opinion of the forum is the best place in town for both (though, not at the same time, obviously). I expect lots of replies, especially as I resisted the temptation to mis-spell "place"

Oh, I've already warned her about Arkells

La llama est un quadrupidore

Apparently, the plaice which is good is the shop up Woodlands Edge.

They do not accept credit cards - cod only!

York Road chippy used to be good. Haven't been in there for a while though.

The best chippy in town is right by the magic roundabout, english people running it too!!  York Road is good, but this one is better in my humble opinion!!

Best of luck getting tickets for the Slavers away. York Rd chippy is not as good as it was. The one on the Magic is superb and the guy who owns it is Town. The one I've been using recently is the one in Kingsdown - very good and cheap as chips.

York Road chippy is decent. Proper chips and no grease. Good value for money as well.

The Trident Fish Bar at curry corner is decent if you're after a higher class of fish & chips (if there can be such a thing), tasty fish, excellent chips and the homemade tartar sauce is great.

York Road is pricey compared to The Frying Fish on the Magic Roundabout, who is the most reasonably priced chippy in Swindon.

Robin, who runs The Frying Fish, is having to move as his lease runs out at the end of the month, and it's not being renewed, so he's taking over the chippy in Gorse Hill by Iceland mid January

That's a bugger for him, the £2 match special sausage and chips was a winner. Guess his business doesn't rely on that though.

Gorse hill is good for me, I park there on match day :)

Shame that as food is of good quality and many people enjoy a "football special" Sausage and Chips on a Saturday afternoon.

He'll be taking his 'football special' with him. He's looking to open in Gorse Hill around 13th Jan, but he'll be open at the Magic for the games over Christmas.

Seconded.

Thirded. Can't believe he is moving. Not only the chippie, but it's also my local... York Road chippy is right by me too, but just not as good, fresh, or generous with portions. Also, Robin is a true STFC fan...

I think it's more that they are just very slow. The amount of customers they must lose on match days because of the speed of service is probably fairly significant.

Somewhat off topic but is the chippy in Highworth still there. When I was a kid the only way they could get me to the dentist in Swindon  (whilst my dad had moved to near witney we still went to Mr Smirles in old town) was a promise of a trip to the railway museum  (the old one) and then chippy tea from Highworth!

If that's the main road then yes... my knowledge of Highworth is limited to the chippy and the pitch and putt!

Decent Lardy from marshalls in pewsey

I think there is a Marshalls in Bassett too.

The best fish and chips is York Road.

The Frying Fish is also a good one, The Trident is overrated in my opinion.

Shame the lease wasn't renewed. That plaice (sorry) was always busy, even more so on a match day

I think so, there was a (justified) moaning 'bring back our football special' text on BBC wilts the other day.

reckon gorse hill is too far out the way for loads of fans..

Fish and chips is a strange one, the smell of a chip shop is revolting, even when I'm starving, but every now and then I get an urge for fish and chips, and always regret it afterwards, when I feel bloated and a bit sick.

See, I couldn't disagree any more, find yourself a decent chippy and there is nothing better than fish and chips, chuck a bit of curry sauce in and your laughing.

Agreed, I have to really be in the mood for a chippy, which doesn't happen much.
