Is he going there to play rugby?

That was where he had trials wasn’t it?

28 years ago today we paid nearly half a million pounds for Wayne Allison. Funny how the economics of football works, the idea of us spending that on a player now, let alone the closer to £1m that is adjusted for inflation, is absolutely mad, but it happened all the time in the 90s. We were a Division Two/League One club then as well, not even First Division.

Mainly because we sold a bunch for over a million over the course of a few years.

We've sold a fair few in the 21sr century for plenty and not reinvested anything like as much in fees. My uneducated speculation would be that - lower leagues wise at least - a far higher percentage of your overall budget goes on wages than in the 90s and far less on fees. It'd be really interesting to read some comparison of how club finances work then and now, if such a thing existed. Sounds like an Athletic article waiting to happen...

A quick look at our 1995-96 Accounts showed our Cost of Sales to be 4m.  In 21/22 it was 3.9m.

Now, that includes things beyond player wages, but is the lowest level of details provided.

Admin expenses were just under 1m in 1996, but nearly 2.4m in 21/22.  Lord only knows on what.

In 1995/96 we brought in a net loss of 858k on Transfer fees (that'll be Wayne and some others).  The year before we made a profit of 1.3m (good bye Jan).

Our revenue was 4.4m back then, up to 6.4m in 21/22.

I'm not sure what any of that says, other than it was more fun back then, sort of, for another year or so until it went proper hostile.

Oh, and for anyone interested, our Premier League season earned us a grand total of 5.4m in Revenue for the year!  How times have changed.

I imagine back then alot more transfer fees were actually transfer fees. Paying 500k for Wayne Allison meant you paid 500k for Wayne Allison.

Now a days a lot more of it is x up front, y over this period, z if this target is hit, v% sell on clause etc.

20% difference in revenue between the Premier League and the third tier, crikey.

Thanks for the numbers Rob... perhaps less of a different in the split of costs than I was expecting, although I suppose bring in inflation (general prices have not quite doubled since 1995, but not far off) and the admin costs have probably held up about even whilst the wage bill has stagnated.

Paul Mullin suffers a punched lung vs Man U Sad. So could well be not in the Wrexham side that plays us at end of August!
