I've been told that this new bank holiday will come out of my holiday entitlment. Is this legal? Or just the company/manager trying to bully me out of a days holiday.

Yes I believe it's legal, although mean-spirited.

I think you are right Nev. I have to work it on duty, if it was any other public holiday i would get the day back. Not this one, they insist we will be paid overtime and not entitled to time off in lieu. (I think its a bit shit as I would prefer the TOIL rather than the money)

I don't get this one either In fairness though Reg, we've also got quite a generous general holiday entitlement compared to some other European countries (on average), and in many other places, if the date falls on a weekend, they lose the day off (of course in France if it falls on a Thursday, it's a four day weekend)

Depends what your contract says. If it reads that you're entitled to xx days holiday, it'll come out of your entitlement. If it reads that you're entitled to xx days holiday + 8 bank/public holidays, it'll come out of your entitlement. If it reads that you're enbtitled to xx days holiday + bank/public holidays you should get an extra day off.

We've a Jehovah's witness at work who argues the toss every year over the fact we have to take 4 days a year at Christmas out of our allowance and he doesn't want to.

A day off for a random Persian, instead of some old german bint? No thanks, least the Queen/monarchy brings something to the country, not that I'm a royalist.

They bought Pippa's arse to the masses that's worth a day off on it's own.
