3-1 to the Town.

I'm setting off at about 9am. Nice gentle trip around the M25.

I'll go for  0-2.

They have a forward line better than most league 2 sides. on paper at least!

I'll go for a 2 2 draw in front of 5214.

Can't see us losing.

2-1

Flint, Ferry

Edit: Will be surprised if the crowd is over 4000.

Colchester average about 3,000 unless playing a big club or a London team. 3,452 crowd I reckon.

1-1 prediction from me, with a J. Smith scorcher. I wish I could've come down to this as it's in my neck of the woods but I have to work unfortunately, so I'll be relying on the TEF updates I'm afraid.

A 2-2 draw but we'll win the replay. We'll then get some shite L1 team in the 3rd round and lose convincingly.

2-1 win. We'll probably get a team like Derby or Barnsley in the 3rd round.

Would be glad with a draw there, but realistically I will go for a 2-0 defeat.

Would be happy with a draw. Although, it would be terrible if we got a really good draw and then lost the replay.

Couldn't afford to go, with Southend and Bristol Rovers in the same week. And from what many of you lot have said, the ground isn't the best!

Another nice relaxing no pressure game as far as I'm concerned. I must admit that my eye is on the Rovers game.

We've done Bristol City, Huddersfield Town and Exeter City this season so why not Colchester?

YOU REDS.

I'm feeling quite confident about this one, which normally ends with disappointment unfortunately.

I'll be happy with a draw personally, So at least we can be in the hat for the draw, but i will go for a 2-1 win.

It would be great to snatch an easy victory today without any of our players picking up a knock. A nice big juicy 3rd round cash spinner would be fantastic for the club and more than likely see the team bond together even more.

1-0 STFC

Title: Re: Colchester Vs Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: slinky on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 11:10:13
Not really fussed about today's result.  A win would be nice with a home tie against a big club in the next round.  However if we go out it won't be the end of the world and will allow us to focus on the JPT and the league both of which we have much more chance of winning.

2.1 Town.

Think we'll edge it though, 0-1.

Title: Re: Colchester Vs Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Posh Red on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 13:16:43
We are a confident team at the moment, so playing away to a team from a league above isn't the daunting prospect that it might otherwise be.

Colchester are, at best, an average league 1 club so there's no reason why we can't get a result.

Game could easily go either way, so wouldn't be surprised if we win.

However, knowing our luck if we win we will draw Crawley away & if we lose Colchester will draw one of the big clubs.

Ferry out through illness. Shame, assume it will be Risser, who i'm still not convinced by.

Title: Re: Colchester Vs Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Langers on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 14:01:23
Town (4-4-2): Foderingham; Caddis, Flint, McCormack, Ridehalgh; Ritchie, Risser, Smith J, De Vita; Magera, Kerrouche

Title: Re: Colchester Vs Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: london_red on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 14:02:02
No Ferry which is a blow, guess Risser slots in but that leaves a lack of creativity in midfield.

1-1, Kerrouche

Title: Re: Colchester Vs Swindon Town - Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Batch on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 14:15:46
No Ferry, or rather a Risser-Smith combo is a massive blow. I'm downgrading my prediction to a 2-0 loss.

The BBC do not have the rights to broadcast commentary of League and FA Cup matches over the internet.

You will need to purchase an STFCPlayer subscription.

Colchester were an embarrassment to league 1 today - we played them off the park. You could have been excused of thinking we were 2 leagues above them.

Don't want to put any negatives on this thread but Risser is miles behind the rest of the team in terms of quality.  With Ferry today it could have been 5 or 6.

Great win.

Post by: STFCDude3 on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 19:11:29
I went to the game today (I live in Essex) and I must say that Matt Ritchie was by far the best player on the park today.  As for Risser, he made some good tackles, but gave the ball away far too cheaply, and does seem to not be able to read the game as quick as the players around him.  Maybe in time he will improve, but as it stands at the moment, he shouldn't be in a promotion-chasing team.

kerrouche was a bit of a strange one today.  Didn't really get into the game, but neither did Magera (who really really needs to learn how to jump), so to sub him off after 25 minutes was strange.  But it all worked out in the end :)

Colchester were absolutely appalling today.  Flint had their main striker in his pocket for most of the match, and Colchester's tactics seemed to be to hoof it up to their centre forward (who was a tall, well built guy) and hope he can hold it up.  So Flint had that in control :)

In summary, a great win for the Town, who could and should have won by a more comfortable margin, especially as we nearly threw it away at the end, only for our 'keeper to save well in the 93rd minute.  And that was pretty much the only save he had to make all game.

Post by: reeves4england on Saturday, December 3, 2011, 19:56:00
Great day out today! I only decided to go at around 12.40pm. Set off from Oxford Circus at 1pm, got the train and got to the ground for 2.45pm - earlier than I expected.

We went at them from the off, creating a chance in the first minute which was finished poorly by somebody or other - a weak header into the keeper's arms. We struggled to keep possession at times in the first half, but were the only team creating chances. First, Flint hit the bar when he perhaps could have done better, and the rebound fell to a town player whose effort was cleared off the line. Then minutes later Ritchie was played through. The keeper came chariging off his line and Ritchie rounded him with ease, but in doing so took the ball too far wide and could only shoot into the side netting. Ritchie's other contributions to the half were also underwhelming - a few poor crosses over everyone's head and a pathetic dive in the box. The effort was there though, and he was doing well against their RB.

In the second half the same pattern resumed. We didn't keep the ball as well as might have done but we still created openings. Plenty of balls across the box which nobody got on the end of - their full backs were being shown up big time. Eventually though, Ritchie hassled their RB and blocked his clearance, before running into the area, sidestepping one or two challenges and firing into the corner. I think the keeper got something on it but he was never keeping that one out!! More chances fell to Flint and Murray, and more balls were fired across the face of goal, but we couldn't grab a second. Colchester almost stole something late on but a good move ended in a weak header which our Wes did well to take low to his left.

All in all a very satisfying day out. Colchester were poor if truth be told, but we played very well. McCormack absolutely dominated in the first half, and nothing got past Aden Flint all day. The substitutions were a little strange, but it's come to a point where you just can't justify questioning PDC.

There were very few down points today, but I'll mention two small things. First, Risser. I don't want to get on his back, and I'm not going to shout abuse at him during games, but he wasted possession frequently today. I still hope he'll prove us all wrong though! Secondly, and much more worrying, the behaviour of some of our fans was not just disappointing but actually completely demoralising. Yes, our fans were quiet in the first half, but that's because the game was quite dull, not because they're too busy muching on their 'prawn sandwiches'. Those who were criticising our fans today, openly and loudly, should be ashamed. The atmosphere wasn;t great but to actually start ruining fellow Town fans' chants with childish jeering is pathetic. It wasn't Crispy, but it was some of the people he was with. Thankfully, in the second half there was a bit less of that and a lot more chating of actual Swindon songs which people knew and could join in with, and for that reason (and the win) I went home happy!

Overall a good result, even if Colchester were poor. We defended brilliantly. Wes will be credited with the clean sheet but the 10 men in front of him deserve as much credit for keeping Colchester at arms length all afternoon.

As for the 3rd round, I hope we get somebody crap who we can beat and get into the 4th round... I can't make 3rd round weekend, so a big tie would be gutting!

Any mention of the Kerrouche sub incident on the radio, was Paolo asked post match?

No sign of injury, can only guess it was lack of effort. Paolo looked livid on the touch line, turned his back as Kerrouche came off then just pointed for him to sit down. Really hope he doesn't go the same way as Timlin and Leon Clarke.

Good performance all round. Looked a bit light in midfield and resorted to a few long balls at the start, but Risser improved as the game went on. The defence dealt with everything flung at them, Wes had nothing to do until the last minute.

Ritchie was getting so much stick from the supporters' coach crew, completely unwarranted. He may have been a little under par the last few games, but we don't have anyone else who can turn it on and win a match like that.

Having never seen Swindon get past the 3rd round, is this finally our year for a cup run? Home to anyone in the next round please.

Just back couple of points    1, we do not want a souless new ground like that where all the sound filters out the end of each stand none of which were filled in. 2. colchester were shockingly one dimensional hoofing to their big striker and playing a high line were frequently getting done by our forwards 3. Missed Ferry but whole team worked hard we should have won 3 or 4 nil  4. Another boss goal from Ritchie..... bring on a Premier League  team in R3 at the Ground Ground

Always read these threads after every game and attend every home game. One common theme seems to re-occur. The opposition is always poor (apart from the Pike's).
Is this just not a case of us making them look shit. We play some good football and they just can't match it. Lets not do ourselves down by saying how bad the opposition were, thay just can't match our class at the moment.

As I said, we did defend very well today. But at the same time one shot on target shows just how much attacking threat Colchester posed today. They really were'nt that good.

Oh, and just for the record. This is from the official site, and is possibly the most inaccurate description of a goal I've ever read...

Quote
The opener came on the hour with a superb finish from Ritchie putting the Robins into a deserved lead. A firm challenge from Smith in the middle of the park saw the ball run free to Ritchie. Having made good ground towards the box, he unleashed a fierce left footed shot from 25 yards which cannoned into the top corner of the net.

Just for starters, I'm sure the goal was scored from inside the box.

the behaviour of some of our fans was not just disappointing but actually completely demoralising.
Good write up Mr Reeves. The comments I have highlighted above particularly interest me. I would not absolve Crispy from critisism though. I've never met Crispy before but it soon became apparent today that me and Mrs Taylor were sitting in the middle of his cronies.

As you say, the Town support was not especially loud today (but it wasn't that quiet either and I thought 500+ was more than respectable). Crispy's gang were only interested in making jokes about how quiet the general atmosphere was i.e 'Colchester Library' and so on (one of their better ones) but they made no attempt themselves to get any actual singing going or to try and support the team in any way.

In fact, they were not actually watching the game at all. They just kept coming out with random shit that they clearly thought was he-he-larious except clearly, no one else agreed.

Now, I will happily admit that I am a 'grumpy old man' (and proud of it) but I know I was not the only one to feel like this (and your post is further proof) looking around, as this shit continued during the first half, I looked around and I could see people around me were getting well and truly fucked off with it. One bloke several row in front turned round and said 'Shut up you fucking dick heads' or something along those lines.

I said to Mrs Taylor at half time, 'that is fucking it, I am not sitting with those pricks during the second half'. So we moved down to the front. Some bloke and his missus seeing the seats next to us were free, came up to us and said, 'is anyone sitting here mate?', I said. 'We've only just moved down here mate, we were sat up the back in the first half but we were surrounded by dick heads'. He said, 'Oh, I recognize you. We were sat in the row in front of you. We moved for the same reason!'.

So you see, it's not just me. There was then almost another altercation with the stewards because we had moved and other people couldn't get back in their seats because we were sitting in them but then again, no one was actually sat in their own seats any way....ANYWHOOO....that's another story.

Back to the point. Crispy - you and your gang are a bunch of cretins. With most of you I can actually forgive it because you are only about 16 and don't know any better but that bloke who is old enough to be your dad (maybe he is you dad? Maybe he is the father of all of you?) really should know better but is the biggest knob out of all of you (and that is saying something, believe me).

I seriously don't know why you bother going. You might as well just go down the Savoy in Swindon and get Stella'd up. All the money you are currently wasting on travelling, you could be spending it on Stella. Think about it, you would be doing yourselves a favour but more importantly, everyone else. i.e. those people who are not complete and utter knob jockeys.

Prick.

You are 100% correct young man. They were poor because we made them look poor. We did all the right things. We closed them down, we harried them, we wanted it more.

I will also stick up for Risser at this point. How I see it, he and Smith clearly know their limitations and did a great job in midfield today by keeping it simple. They won the ball time and time again and then played a simple ball out to De Vita or Ritchie who took it on from there.

That was fucking great today.

Have to disagree with these comments about our fans and their behaviour...it's called having a laugh and 'prawn sandwich' a fair few fans were chuckling about so I'd hardly say nobody else agreed Shaun, more of a 50/50 split with me being a chuckler, and calling people pricks for trying to get an atmosphere going...bit silly really but as you say your a grumpy old man!

There were many chants that were tried but the general atmosphere was rubbish so nobody was going to get involved, it was a dire game and 1-0 either way seemed a fair result, so glad it was us!

Enjoyed the day out and pleased we are in the 3rd round, more atmosphere at Rovers please!

Two points:

They were making no attempt whatsoever at getting an atmosphere going. They were just being pricks and I will certainly avoid them like the plague in the future.

I just spotted some other bollocks you came out with.

"1-0 either way would have been a fair result"

1-0 to them would have been a travesty to end all travesties. WTF are you talking about? Are you in Crispy's moronic fucking gang or something?

I just think if they'd spent less time trying to start chants that were in jokes or abusive towards our own fans, and more that were supportive of STFC, they might have got a more positive reaction. But I wouldn't want to get in the way of the Crispy club having a good time

As for OST's comments about the older geezer, I've been thinking exactly the same thing for a couple of years now. Are all his friends 16-18?

I haven't been able to go to the county ground since the beginning of september.
But my season ticket last year, and where I sat at the beginning of this year is up the top of the Arkells right next too the away fans, and it does seem to be getting busier with more people singing up there. Maybe this is why?

Wasn't able to listen to the game but from here it seems we should have won 5-0. I got in just to hear di canio rip Kerrouche apart on the radio, out in January?

Now onto Southend tuesday. 12 out of 12 please!

5-0 would not have flattered. The Kerrouche thing was a bit baffling. How bad can a player be in 20 minutes or so?  The game had hardly got going when he was subbed.I assumed he must have been injured.

That's PDC I suppose. He was always a total individual as a player, he was never going to be anything else as a manager. You take the rough with the smooth and the results speak for themselves.

Fine if you want to enjoy a day out. We all do. So you don't completely destroy the Town End for me, please could you:

a) be conscious of people around you.

b) sing songs at the speed they're meant to be sung. You ruin them.

c) Grow up.

d) Get some class and stop being chavvy muppets.

e) Dress better. At least let people think you might have something to offer society for that period until you open your mouth.

f) Get new voices. You sound terrible.

Otherwise, it's all good and I love you.

Firstly, why the hell was Crispy wearing a pink skirt and a stupid wig ?? Utterly baffling.

OST, you got moved a couple of rows in front of me. You're right, you are a grumpy old man ;)

On to the game. If they'd have scored at the end it would have been robbery in all honesty. Ritchie was immense yesterday and he links with Caddis so well down that right flank. My only constructive criticism would be, he can be abit greedy sometimes and should look to pass more.

I thought Magera had a good game and once he's got used to the English game he could be a real asset in this league. Jonathan Smith also played well and should partner Ferry. Risser was the weak link yesterday and he seems to give the ball away far too easy.

Still unsure about Ronan Murray. He's very mobile and a danger in the box but his size will always be against him.

The defence was superb as usual. Both Flint and McCormack had their strikers in their pockets. We really need to hold on to Flint in January.

The ITV highlights if you can call them that were shit as usual.  On a more positive note at least the pundits comments were positive.

Indeed - and the goal came from a mistake?

No it didnt, the left back lost the ball because Matt Ritchie put him under pressure, then ran about 15 yards further forward, cut inside a few players and put an unstoppable shot past the goal keeper

I thought Magera had a good game and once he's got used to the English game he could be a real asset in this league.

I was lucky enough to have a decent conversation with Magera the other week and he did say the usual stuff. The english game is so much quicker and much more physical than anything he's ever played before. He fully admitted it was even quicker and tougher than he expected and its taken him a while to get used to it.

Think he'll play a big part in the last third of the season.

Oh and I cant be the only one who would like us to go up and dick Sheffield United at Bramall Lane can I?

Trouble is OST you would be the one with the banning order in the "new society".
So you done the right thing by moving.

A few years back incidents got sorted with the Old Bill often turning a blind eye.
Any sign of trouble those twats would be the first to run but sadly they are the most likely to provoke.

These days I choose carefully where I sit or stand. Sitting next to those twats yesterday would have ruined what turned out to be a great day out in addition I travelled on my own yesterday and was able to concentrate on the football without having to explain to 2 young boys about appropriate language.
I enjoyed the Company I sat next to yesterday and I was singing and even ran down the front to celebrate Matty's goal. Old fart as well is me.

OST - Pity you didn't sit at the far left it was a "twat free" zone.

Who is the older one who goes round with them? He's probably only early 40s, looks like Harry Enflield's Perry, with a few greys settting in - but he's running around with a bunch of 18 year olds. It's quite odd.

"In the next 7 or 8 years we will be in the Premiership if the club dont sack me"
There is only 1 Paolo Di Canio

Paolo, it's Paolo.   You're just being ignorant now.

Prick.

I love this post...noticed in the Town End last week a couple of young uns causing grief...idiots and its no doubt that soon someone is going to sort them out soon........only a matter of time.

Pretty easy for these tools to go somewhere like Colchester and act like twats. You can bet they will behave at Rovers when they realise they are out of their depth.

Did anyone tell them they were bothering people?
don't be absurd, we're British. We do nothing at the time and moan about it afterwards. Not that I would do/say anything either seeing as I attend games alone nowadays and would piss myself at the first sign of aggression.

Anyway - it's really fucking tiresome reading all this after every away game. Why does nobody post big long match reports with individual player ratings anymore? This isn't Twitter, there is no character limit, fill your boots. I'd prefer to read the reports of some on here than the OS/Adver.

Indeed, let's move on.

Well I'm afraid I can't be fucked to do a big long match report. Then again, a long report is not really necessary. We were far better than them and it looked like it was us who were a division higher than them. 7 or 8 attempts on target for us vs 1 for them in the 93rd minute says it all.

Here's my marks out of 10.

Foderingham - 7 only called upon once and when he was, he did his job

Caddis - 8 class, class act. Oozes and drips class in fact. Easily good enough for the Championship
Flint - 7, man mountain, nothing got past him
McCormack - 7, looks like a midget next to the afore mentioned man mountain. Did not put a foot wrong
Ridhalgh - 7, tbh, did not really notice him which, for a defender I think is a positive thing.

Ritchie - 8, toss up between him and Caddis for m.o.m. Would prefer to see him on the left and just occasionally switch over to the right to get his 30 yard screamers.
Risser/Smith - 7, can't separate them. Both got up and down the pitch to shut their midfielders down. Kept it simple. Job done, fair play.
De Vita - 7, looked lively, worked hard.

Kerrouche - Can't really give him a mark as he was on for such a short time. No idea what Paolo saw to pull him off so soon.
Magera - 7, I think someone said elsewhere that he is going to become a key figure as the season goes on. If he stays free of injury, gets a good run in the side and gets accustomed to the pace of the game he will be a key player.
Murray -7, very quick, very skilful, nice touches. Will hopefully get better as he gains confidence.

Cibocci/Connell - not on long enough to mark really although Connell did run around like a silly bugger. Fair play.

Would love a Premier League team at home that's low on confidence. Wigan would be perfect.

I already had a go at a report, but seeing as Sonic is throwing his toys out, here are my ratings too...

Foderingham - 7 I might have kept a clean sheet yesterday, but he provides so much confidence at the back

Caddis - 8 Played very well - simple balls, keeping possession when he could. One or two good runs forward too
Flint - 8 Nothing got past him all day. Probably should have scored but never mind!
Edit: McCormack - 8 My man of the match. Won the ball at the back, kept possession, and was a cut above
Ridhalgh - 7 Only remember their right winger getting the better of him on one occasion. Solid.

Ritchie - 8 Worked very hard. Crossing wasn't always top notch but boy did he put a shift in. He also caused all sorts of problems for their LB and took his goal brilliantly
Smith - 7 Won the ball time and time again in the middle
Risser - 6.5 I wanted to give him 6, but others thought he had an alright game. I'm still hoping to see more from him
De Vita - 7 Made good runs, hassled their RB and did his job

Kerrouche - 6 Not sure what he did wrong. He was chasing the ball around in the early stages
Magera - 7 Was a nuisance for their big defenders and definitely has something about him. Hopefully he'll notch a couple of goals soon
Murray - 7 Lively and has a good touch. Finishing wasn't quite up to scratch, but hopefully that'll come!

Cibocci/Connell - Didn't notice Cibocci much. Connell put himself about and pressured their back line late on.

Ermm slight quibble, you've said Mcormack mom, but marked 3 players higher?

So you make McCormack MOM (and he was good I agree) but you gave him 7 and yet you gave three others 8  :hmmm:

As for OST's comments about the older geezer, I've been thinking exactly the same thing for a couple of years now. Are all his friends 16-18?

Its called grooming up this way....

Did anyone tell them they were bothering people?

Plenty made their views clear - including one guy who was promptly told to f*#* off which was charming.

You can't talk to those kind of people without getting a barrage of abuse - easier to move and avoid hassle.

Fair enough. Just wondered because people were on about giving them a smack, which would be ironic if at least they didn't ask the group first.

spot on Si, talk of smacking people ( youngsters at that ) sounds no better than what they are moaning about. If anyone knows where they sit or stand at home games make a note of the seat numbers and ask the club to approach them, they may just listen to Wray etc and make some sort of effort to calm down a bit whether at home or away.

Thanks for the post match analysis peeps. Heard most of the first half on the radio, lost reception around Morton-in-marsh. Was delighted when the score came on 5-live!

Sound like the only negative was Kerouche potentially having a disagreement with PDC. Hope its not serious, he's not been best in the last couple of weeks but prior to that he'd worked his bollocks off for the team.

A lot of managers would of waited until half time before making changes but Paolo is getting most things right at the moment so can't knock his tactics and player choices.Kerrouche has had some really good games for us so was obviously pissed off at being taken off so early into the game but hope it was more frustration than anything else.
