He's signed for Wycombe. It's lazy journalism. Sturrock ex-Dundee United and Lambert is a Scot who has not long left Scotland.

Coughlan played a handful of matches around '96 - seem to think it was the era of McMhon and the round necked Castol GTX kit - on loan from Blackburn IIRC.

Yeah, he definately played on loan for us. Looked like a good player too.

Coughlan would be a superb signing. He's 32 which is still a good age for a Central Defender - he's got the experience, leadership and as SY said would be great alongside Jerel.

I thought he was a complete non-entity to rank along side the likes of Graham Anthony and Stuart Elliott (remember them?).

HOWEVER, he would be an excellent signing for us right now.

If you'd asked me before the speculation started, I would have said no way would he drop to division 3. But he's been 'linked' with Wycombe and you have the Sturrock connection so why not?

That's how I remember that loan spell too. But as you also indicate, it's largely irrelevant as he'd be a great transfer now.

I don't think he is. However, I believe I've read somewhere that Brian Laws will let him go on a free.

He's got a year to go apparently but Laws is obviously having a bit of a clear up and wants his own players in there. I think this one will happen.

If you'd blinked you would have missed him. He played three games towards the end of 96/97 on loan from Blackburn, at home to Norwich (0-3), Southend (0-0) and Ipswich (0-4). So not what you might call memorable games. If you have the Southend programme from the 5th April 1997 (who hasn't?) he is on the front cover.

The next I heard of him he was helping Livingstone into the SPL (I think he was captain). This kind of facinated me, with him having been such a total non event at Swindon and I followed his career from that point on.

I was also at the Ipswich game (0-4) but don't remember anything about it.

I was at the Norwich game and remember they totally outplayed us; Keith O'Neill and Darren Eadie tore us to pieces.

I think Phil King may have made his 2nd "debut" for us that day too but I could be totally wrong on that.

 You sure that wasn't the opener in 96/97, when Keith O'Neill and Darren Eadie ripped us apart?

Ipswich 0-4??  I thought it was a heavier defeat than that!  Or was that a different season?

They may have done that day too; but i definately remember being at the County Ground (Easter Saturday from memory) and those two were a class apart that day; we never had a chance.

   Think I must have missed the one at the CG, probably away if it was Easter.   Eadie particularly and O'Neill both looked exciting players, but their careers were cut short by injury.   Eadie of course was relatively.local

The 1993/94 Season was infamous for two things

1) Swindon in the Premiership
2) The badass Prem sticker album by Merlin.

I was at Primary School in Westbury back then and I was desperatly trying to swap Darren Eadie for an Adi Whitbread with this kid all lunchtime... I eventually succeeded.

Later that day I'm in class and a teacher walks in with a friend from her school days... Darren-fucking-Eadie... No word of a lie... The kids strolls to Eadie and gets his sticker signed.

Lesson learned? Hate Adi Whitbread.

Just looking at 'notable Swindonians' on Wikipedia, I never realised Gilbert O'Sullivan grew up in Swindon.

Alfred the Great was born in Wantage, so doesn't count.

Brunel was born in Portsmouth, and his link to 'nam is GWR. Doesn't count.

Robert Peel was born in Bury, and was only MP for Chippenham. Doesn't count IMHO.

Kilvert on the other hand does count, as he was born and bred in 'nam. But I bet most people on here haven't heard of him. I'm still winning.

And if you've seen a picture of Wil Hodgson, trust me I'm still winning.

So there, I'm still the most famous person from 'nam.

I tell you what, throughout the mid-late 90's we took some right hammerings didn't we? It does not make nice reading :?

It didn't make nice bloody viewing either...although a Chris Hay equaliser deep, deep in to injury time at Bradford was a high point.

I went up to Middlesborough on a freezing tuesday night and we lost 6-0!

Add that to the 7-1 at Forest, the odd 4-0 defeat here and there and I've really seen us taking some thrashings.

The only time I can remember us hammering someone in the league was Huddersfield 6-0. I think Peter Thorne got a hat trick and their fans had to endure it all whilst sat on the stratton bank on a freezing weekday night. They were good sports though I remember them celebrating a corner like it was a goal.

Would be an excellent signing.  Has done well in the Championship with Wednesday the last couple of years.  His experience alongside Ifil could be vital, an we are very light at centre back as it is.

We were aweful from about 1997, when I started supporting Town!!! There was that one spell when were doing well in Division 1 but until recently I had had very little to cheer about as a Swindon fan! I remember going to the Ipswich game which we lost 4-1. Grazioli scored a brilliant opener after about 4 minutes and we fell apart from there. Live on Sky too I think.  :oops:

Atleast we've seen a few larger scorelines in our favour recently, mostly against Notts County  :D

i don't think williams will play mroe than 20-25 games this season. just a feeling i've got in me waters, like.

One of that list will play Left Back, thats 4.
Williams it's getting on a bit so may not be able to play a huge part, thats 3.
Aljofree and Ifil could get suspended at anytime.

I worry about Williams coming back at all, getting on a bit, bad knee injury, he'll struggle to come back and hold his own I reckon.

Adie will be fine for next season.

On the Adver site Coughlan is quoted as saying we are one of his options and that he hopes to have made his decision by the weekend.

I would be very surprised if he played more than a bit part this season.

I like him as a player, his positional play and instruction to those around him is very good, but he wasn't the fastest last season and his lack of mobility in a higher league might cost us.

Coughlans attitude is pissing me off a bit. Doesn't really sound like he wants to play for us, but we're an option if nothing better comes along.

adie's experience will be invaluable off the pitch, his professionalism will set a good example to the younger players and jerel will continue to improve whilst training alongside him and under sloop.

Slightly disappointing, but we do have a little bit of cover at the back, especially if Blackburn sings too.

Part of me expects him to sign for another club thats a long way from Sheffield though, doing 'a dowie', circa last summer.

It would have been nice to get him but I'm quite happy with our defence as it stands. If we had signed him we wouldn't have signed Jesus I guess. I think it's better that we signed a young, up and coming player with something to prove.

Agreed. I know he likes a mix of youth and experience, but he also wants to build for the season after next as well. As he's already said, the defensive area is now complete and imo it looks pretty strong.

If we can get the same level of ability and experience in the other areas I think we may surprise some people next season.
