That was my first game.  Remember walking in to the ground for the first time (on the Bank) and being really impressed.

IIRC it was part of the Shrivenham Road having improvements meaning closing of the away section and moving away fans to the Town End for about 8 games I think.

The club had toyed with the idea of giving the Town End to away fans but after Town fans moaned they gave them back the section in the corner between the Stratton Bank and Shrivenham Road stand as they always had.

The ground failed a few inspections on safety hence the closing of the old stand for a while, the Town End was newly all seated after us getting a job lot of seats from Ayesome Park for cheap.

Kicked off down Broad Street afterwards. Their lot came down there in huge numbers and the police scattered along with most of our lot. A few stood and got a pasting. I ran away along with my mates and hid down a back alley.

cheers Pete I couldn't remember the reason why but do recall the players complaining they were too loud and giving the away team the advantage. As for cheap seats from Ayresome park we can't blame Power for that one!

I remember being in the disabled enclosure with my Dad, when Middlesborough were in there - they made a hell of a din  :(

Now the original question has been answered... Let's focus on the return match instead.

I remember it well.  I was wearing an extravagant multi patterned bakers boy hat and the massed ranks going back to the station were greeted by a knackered ford fiesta containing Brizzoles mob who wanted to fight us all.  We however just laughed at them.

Lets hope we can get something like that back at some point. What a side really.

In a variation on the theme, I was standing on the City end that afternoon. The only thing that helped me contain my excitement was enjoying the abuse the fans were giving their own team.

On another point, has football become more cautious or has the standard improved? I can't imagine a game with that many errors in both attack and defence today. Was more entertaining then, mind.

You have to love Roger Malone - "who said Swindon can't play?" - given this was the side of Ardiles and had been playing amazing football for well over a year (although in that season far less effectively),that last thing you'd expect to ask.  When you consider the state of the pitch, some of the football is top class.  And oh to have those two upfront - they both have a single focus, get in the box and get on the end of things.  There is a move in one of the goals where Shearer comes to lay the ball off, realises an attack is on, head down, heads in a straight line for the 6 yard box, no interest in staying involved in the build up.

Do you remember when we played the Gas at home and both sets of fans were singing "we all agree Roger Malone is a wan*er. I like the bit when he said Gittens bullied their player to get the ball

Having stood and sung in the Town End throughout the oft glorious 80’s it made me so sick seeing and hearing away contingents benefit from its acoustics.
