Post by: corner on Monday, October 25, 2010, 09:13:11
So we have plenty of courses in and around swindon and some great deals at the mo, whats the best? my favorite has to be castle combe manor house just fantastic!! I did play wrag barn the other day fo £20 with soup, good deal to play a nice course. I have been play at blunson house hotel they have a liltle 9 hole, just right for my short game, course always tidy but greens arnt always the best. Others?

broome is great as a council owned course.woodbridge park(brinkworth)is cheap and cheerfull and does deals for different times of the week.
basset downs is alright for a 9hole but a bit pricey for what it is.better value range there compared to broome though

Yeah I go down the Bassett range every now and then. Pretty decent. Wrag Barn is probably a bit better than Highworth Rec.

The Wiltshire's not bad but the greens are better at Wrag Barn - I'm a bit biased as I'm a member there.  Ogbourne is a bit of a challenge if there's any wind about.  If you don't mind travelling a bit, Kingsdown near Bath is really enjoyable.

I've only played Basset and Lark Hill that are close-ish. Unless you count melksham and upavon. The best is Upavon  :)

South Cerny is nice with a linksy feel to it although good players would want more sand and water..its a young course but good value at £20...........Broome is a great course but tough.
Got to say Wrag Barn is my favourite  course...........the 18th makes you feel great if you hit a good shot to it and everyone watching.
Castle Coombe nr Chippenham is a great course but pricey and i like Marlbrough better than Ogbourne which is the first course i ever saw mountain goats as caddys!
The best 9 hole course in Swindon is Highworth...9 tough holes.

Used to be a member at Deanwood Park golf club  Near Newbury. Nice little 9 hole course short, but you need to be acurate off the tee.

Donnington Valley Or Donnington Grove?

I'm really shit at golf and I like Faringdon because it's not poncy in the slightest and nobody seems to mind that I'm hopeless at the 'sport' and take ages to go round and always put about 6 balls in the lake.

Its probably a crap course though?

love Bowood and Marlborough Common is a nice course.

I used to quite like Bassett Down, although I haven't played there for a couple of years.  the Par 3 2nd is a cracking little hole.

A golf quiz with a barbie and beer would be good....question....which Swindon based pro golfer shares a name with a hill overlooking the Vale of Pewsey?

Through Marlborough on the road to Pewsey, turn off at Clench Common then CP half way to Wooton Rivers, that's the easiest route, but there are better ways. My fave is an old trackway, from the edge of Savernake, that leads to the CP. Don't know owt about it, but judging by the hedges etc, it must be ancient.

At least Bowood punishes the bombs away approach cos the rough's always horrendous.

I've always been slightly disappointed with Castle Combe (bar the 2nd which is probably my favourite par 3 anywhere) for what you pay, Bowood and Cumberwell (Park, BOA - get yourselves up there, wonderful 36 holes) always have better greens.

Playing the Ryder Cup course at the Manor in a fortnight, can't wait.

Morning Dave,
Very true about the rough at Bowood, I played Hanbury Manor a couple of months ago and that is very nice indeed, i would rate it above the Brabazon, let me know how you get on at CM, ive booked a weekend end there next April to play the 2010 and Roman road

Sam Matton, local golfer plays out of Bowood and Marlborough, has qualified for the final round of qualifying for the full European Tour....out of 1000 odd golfers he is down to the final qualifying round in the New Year.....the top 25 out of 140 will join the full tour and all its riches....a bad second round out of four cost Martin Sell a place sadly.
Lets hope against the odds Sam can qualify...there are some quality players in this last stage including players from the full tour who finished low in the money list and have to try and qualify again for the full European tour.
